My OB just called to tell me my bloodwork indicates I am developing gestational diabetes. Because I had a gastric bypass 4 yrs ago, my nutritional needs are kind of tricky to manage, so she is referring me to a "fetal internal medicine specialist". Does anyone have any info they could share with me on the diabetes? Perhaps websites with sample diets and examples? I'm scared and nervous and feeling like a failure. I've only gained 10lbs in the 32 weeks I've been pregnant and was so proud of myself.

It will all depend on how developed the diabetes is. They may even refer you to a dietician (sp?) to help with your diet. Don't worry and it can be controlled until you have the baby. It soon goes away after you have the baby!

oh so sorry you have this, I didn't get it with Savannah, but my new doctor informed me the other day that this time I will have to drink the nasty orange stuff, lol. With Savannah I got to drink a coke an hour before I went to the doctors! :) But not with this one. Though, that is down the road from now, but I just don't look forward to it

I had it with both my pregnancies, my doctor put me on a strict no sugar diet. Then after a month or so she ran another glucose test. I had to stay on the diet through the rest of my pregnancy. I didn't have a computer at the time so I am sorry to say that I don't know of any sites on this.

I went to Dr today and I have to go back 3/22 for the test. I told the Dr I can not drink that yucky stuff cuz it makes me puke every freakin time I have had to do it. Well he said to me Brandy, do you like candy?? Me of course. LOL He said do you like jelly beans, Me they are ok depending on the flavor, why?? Cuz I want you to go to the candy store before coming here next time and buy 40 jelly beans any flavor you want, bring them here show the girls then sit and eat them, then we willl test you in an hour. This will be the same as drinking the nasty stuff. I was so excited!!! Wooo Hoooo I dont have to be sick and can still know what is going on. Call your Doctor and see if he will let you do this ok!! Good luck!!

first off big big ((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))), I was lucky to pass my glucose test with flying colors so I don't have to worry about that but now I am starting to have some of the signs of preeclampsia (numbness in my hands, swelling of hands and feet, headaches, blood pressure up) so I am worried too, the doctor they are sending you too is basicly the same thing as a perinatologist which I have been seeing all along because the twins are monoamniotic and that makes me very high risk, having GD means you are now considered high risk and they send most high risk people to a peri just because they are more experienced with dealing with it, depending on how severe the GD is you may be able to monitor through diet or you may have to start insulin injections

and ChristiNate here we go with those coincidences again, I am about 29 weeks and have gained about the same and remember I have 2 in there, I still say there is a second one hiding in there they haven't found yet   ;) ;), you know my OB's nurse just found out she is having twins and they didn't find the second baby until she was 32 weeks

Cut it out!!!!! Cayden is WAY active.......I gotta get another sono...and FAST.

I'll talk it over with the doc tomorrow after I drink that orange drink.....

So, it's nasty, huh? Can I get by with holding my nose and guzzling it down without gagging?

ChristiNate-
I did my test almost 2 weeks ago and it tasted like orange Kool Aid with 3 times the sugar. YUCK! Just drink it really fast! I'm guessing it came back ok because my OB hasn't called about it. I'll find out more on Wednesday when I go for my next appointment.

Sharin-Everything will turn out fine. Don't feel like a failure. It's not something you can control. It just happens to some woman for whatever reason.

((((shari)))) Don't get yourself worked up about it. There isn't anything you could have done or not done to prevent it. I had GD when I was pregnant with my twins. It's more common in twin pregnancies. I was really scared at first. My doctor sent me to a dietician. She showed me how to use the glucose tester. The worst part was having to poke my finger 4 times a day. And she gave me lots of paperwork on how to eat properly. It was quite an adjustment at first. My OB nearly put me on insulin. But I begged her to let me have one more week on my own with my diet. I finally buckled down and got my blood sugar in check. In fact one time it was only 28!! Normal is below 120 an hour after eating. I freaked and called the doctor. She said that was good. She may also have you check your ketones every morning. I had to do that. You have to check your urine for protien.

You'll do fine. :)

Thanks for your support... Because I had the gastric bypass in 1999, I could not do the standard test (drinking the orange stuff) or the jelly bean test. They are both way too much sugar for me at one sitting. In lieu of that type of testing, my OB has been having me go in for a fasting blood sugar test (just a vial of blood drawn) the day after each appointment. I've been going in every two weeks. This is the first time my fasting blood sugar has been high. It was 112 this time and it's usually like 65-70. She said she'll get me scheduled with the other Dr. and she will make arrangments for me to get the glucometer machine thingy.

I had GD when I was pregnant with my youngest Daughter. I noticed the symptoms in my 4th month and had to drink that Naassssssty orange stuff too! *BLEC*
I was sent to a dietician (SP?) and put on a Diabetic diet and had blood drawn every week at the Doctor's office to test my sugar level and the diet did the trick for me! :)
The GD gradually went away after my Daughter was born. :)

I sure hope the Doctor gets your GD under control soon. *HUGS* :)

I had this with both of my pregnancies... i was put on an 1800 calorie diet which DOES help to regulate your blood sugar. I had it severe with my second pregnancy though and had to take insulin- then got preclamcia:( so i had lots of bed rest... but i had two healthy babies one 8.2 and the last 9.9
i wish you the best of luck! to find dieting tips for this problem just run a search for it- i don't recall the sites i used (sorry)
