Elderly woman mauled by pit bull
ORANGE, California (AP) -- A 91-year-old woman mauled by her great-grandson's pit bull was in critical condition Monday, with both arms amputated at the elbow, officials said.
Ruby Sharum and her granddaughter were putting away groceries Friday night when the dog growled and then lunged at Sharum.
Next-door neighbor Shelbi Moore said Sharum's granddaughter pounded on her door, screaming that her grandmother was being attacked. Moore said she walked into her neighbor's kitchen after calling 911 and saw the pit bull hovering over the elderly woman with blood stains on the floor.
"I was terrified," Moore said. "I had always thought that dog might hurt somebody."
Moore said she had called Animal Care Services at least 10 times in the past year because she and her two young daughters feared the dog.
The dog was euthanized on Saturday by county animal officials.

Pit bulls seem like very unstable dogs. You just never know if they'll attack.
That's just my opinion.
LMAO....
I have a pitbull. He has never growled, showed his teeth, or even looked at us funny!! My 4 year old gets down on the floor with him! My FIl has a pit, she's the same.... Lot sof pits aren't "unstable"
Any dog can be "unstable"

i'd rather be around when a poodle becomes unstable than a pitt bull. i can stomp the poodle, but the pitt would take my leg off.

My "EX" and i bred pitbulls and i agree with Rescue.......it depends on how the dog is trained.......
I just got a new Grandpuppy last week. Oldest DD doesnt want kids so her b/f got her a pit puppy that is just so adorable and loveable and huggable and playful even with her cat.
Mexi is gonna be an awesome dog!

Okay, I may get flamed for this but here I go. I don't understand how a post about a poor elderly lady getting mauled by a pit bull or a lady being mauled to death by a pit bull turns into a "poor dog" post. I don't think any of you would be saying "poor serial killer, they get such a bad rap" if a person were to go on a killing spree.
And to show no simpathy whatsoever for this poor lady that now has no arms but to defend the dog? Or the man that was trapped in his barn while the dogs mauled his wife to death and he couldn't even help her?
This is the other post I am referring to:

If you know an animal is dangerous why would you keep it? Obviously this dog had a reputation and people were scared of it. Now it appears that the dog is violent and was put to sleep.
Not all big dogs are violent. Not all dogs are born with a sweet temprement. And some animals are raised by people to attack others. You never know when you meet an unfamiliar dog how they will react.
Rotweilers have a bad reputation. So do pit bulls. But there are people who raise those animals not as pets but as guard dogs or as violent animals. Spaniels tend to turn as they grow older. But people don't consider spaniels violent animals.
It's in how they are raised and their breeding and enviroment.

That is too sad -
I never had grandparents either - on either side of my family - so I always get upset when I read something like this....

This is heartbreaking. That poor lady...
I want to know why animal control had not taken that dog a LONG time ago? I mean, TEN previous calls to complain??? Why did someone have to get hurt before the situation was looked into? Had their previous concerns been addressed to begin with, this would never have happened. I LOVE pitties...but that's not the point. No matter what the breed, the people who should have handled this dropped the ball, big time. Human aggression is NOT a breed trait of pitbulls! When it's exhibited by ANY dog, they need to be humanely euthanized. Just my opinion. I would not own a dog that displayed human aggression.

This is a local story for us that I heard about a couple days ago. And I feel so bad for the lady. To have to have her arms amputated at the elbow at any age would be awful, but she is 91. I think unfortunately she'll probably go downhill fast.
