I thought this was posted a while back but I can't find it. (Maybe I saw it somewhere else.) What is your favorite hymn and why?

I like It Is Well With My Soul because of the story behind it and the incredible faith of its author. (See the other thread for more on this.)

I will have to think of more...I'm sure other people's posts will spark my memory!

His name is wonderful
His name is wonderful
His name is wonderful
Jesus my Lord

He is the mighty king
Master of everything
His name is wonderful
Jesus my Lord

He's the great shepherd
The rock of all ages
Almighty God is He

He is Lord
He is Lord
He is risen from the dead and He is Lord
Every knee shall bow
Every tongue confess
That Jesus Christ is Lord

I love At Calvary

Years I spent in vanity and pride
Caring not my Lord was crucified
Knowing not it was for me he died
On Calvary

Mercy there was great and grace was free
Pardon there was multiplied to me
There my burdened soul found liberty
At Calvary

The other verses are wonderful, too!

This hymn was writ_ten af_ter two ma_jor trau_mas in Spaf_ford’s life. The first was the great Chi_ca_go Fire of Oc_to_ber 1871, which ru_ined him fi_nan_cial_ly (he had been a weal_thy bus_i_ness_man). Short_ly af_ter, while cross_ing the At_lan_tic, all four of Spaf_ford’s daugh_ters died in a col_li_sion with an_o_ther ship. Spaf_ford’s wife Anna sur_vived and sent him the now fa_mous tel_e_gram, “Saved alone.” Sev_er_al weeks lat_er, as Spaf_ford’s own ship passed near the spot where his daugh_ters died, the Ho_ly Spir_it in_spired these words. They speak to the eter_nal hope that all be_liev_ers have, no mat_ter what pain and grief be_fall them on earth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Refrain

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

Refrain

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

Refrain

For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.

Refrain

But, Lord, ‘tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh trump of the angel! Oh voice of the Lord!
Blessèd hope, blessèd rest of my soul!

Refrain

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

I love At the Cross...

At the cross, at the cross
Where I first saw the light
And the burden of my heart rolled away
It was there by faith I received my sight
And now I am happy all the day

My favorite verse...
Was it for crimes that I had done
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree!

I have several.

"On Eagles Wings" I had that sung at my wedding.

And He will raise you up on Eagle's wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of his hands.

Also "Amazing Grace". I like the story behind that song. The author was a slave trader before He had a converson and was turned around with the grace of God.

Is there a web site that has the lyrics of hymns?

I just did a search on yahoo for hymns and lots of sites came up. Some had lyrics and one I found had instrumental music you could listen to for each hymn listed.

Here is the one with instrumental music (http://www.cyberhymnal.org/)

Oh, and I forgot to say that this same site also has lyrics. It's a great site!

Just As I Am, Without One Plea

Lyrics by Charlotte Elliott

Just as I am, without one plea
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou biddest me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Just as I am, Thy love unknown
Hath broken every barrier down;
Now to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Thanks for the web site. I found this hymn. It would be a shame if people wanted to ban this one from ever being played in public places cause it's Christian.

My favorites from school are:

Cry of the Poor
Come to the Water
Gather Us In

There's also a song based on the Prayer of St. Ignatius Loyola that I love:

Take, O Lord, and receive my entire liberty, my memory, my understanding and my whole will. All that I am and all that I possess You have given me: I surrender it all to You to be disposed of according to Your will. Give me only Your love and Your grace; with these I will be rich enough, and will desire nothing more.

Here's Amazing Grace.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;

That makes you think with him being a slave trader. Horrible for all.

Janelle, I love Amazing Grace too! There were two verses I had never heard...

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, Who called me here below,
Shall be forever mine.

I love that! I think sometimes I get more out of them reading the lyrics than I do singing them, especially hymns I've known all my life. Sometimes I just sing the words without thinking about what I'm singing. But it is so amazing that He takes us just as we are in our imperfect, sinful state. We cannot pardon and cleanse ourselves; only He can!

Cry of the Poor:

The Lord Hears the cry of the poor
Blessed be the Lord

I will bless the Lord at all times
His praise ever in my mouth
Let my soul glory in the Lord
For He hears the cry of the poor

The Lord Hears the cry of the poor
Blessed be the Lord

Let the lowly hear and be glad
The Lord listens to their pleas
And to hearts broken He is near
For He hears the cry of the poor

The Lord Hears the cry of the poor
Blessed be the Lord

Every spirit crushed He will save
Will be ransom for their lives
Will be safe shelter for their fears
For He hears the cry of the poor

The Lord Hears the cry of the poor
Blessed be the Lord

We proclaim the greatness of God
His praise ever in our mouth
Every face brightened in His light
For He hears the cry of the poor

The Lord Hears the cry of the poor
Blessed be the Lord

Come to the water

O let all who thirst
let them come to the water
And let all who have nothing
let them come to the Lord
without money
without price
why should you pay the price
except for the Lord

And let all who seek
let them come to the water
and let all who have nothing
let them come to the Lord
without money
without strife
whyshould you spend your life
except for the Lord

And let all who toil
let them come to the water
and let all who are weary
let them come to the Lord
all who labor
without rest
How can your soul find rest
except for the Lord

And let all the poor
let them come to the water
Bring the ones who are laden
bring them all to the Lord
bring the children
without might
easy the load and light
come to the Lord

I have several favorites but Amazing Grace is certainly in the top 10. WhenDaddy was dieing an "flat-lined we sang him to heaven with this hymn. While we were singing it he had very slight T waves and when we were done singing it he flat-lined again. ?A message that he was in Heaven?

I grew up in GA, going to a tiny Baptist church in the woods, lol. :) My favorite is a song called, "The Family Bible". Some of my earliest memories are of going to Church on Sunday and hearing my grandmother sing it solo, no instruments, just her beautiful voice. It still brings tears to my eyes when I hear it sung that way.

That's a great song, too! I just remembered another one that makes me want to jump up and shout every time I hear it (and I am NOT a jumper and shouter, lol)...It's "They Could Not". It is an absolutely incredible song. I love Sandi Patty's recording of that song!

With Easter approaching, I thought of this thread again, and I wanted to give it a bump. And I wanted to post the words of the song They Could Not (which I mentioned previously). Actually what got me thinking about that song again was the Passion of the Christ movie. Anyway, here are the words, but I doubt that just reading them will be as powerful as hearing them sung. (I get chills every time.)

They looked at Him and saw a simple man
A carpenter with healing in His hands
They saw Him calm a sea and heal a dying man
They saw but could they really understand

They could not, They could not
Though they tried, they could not
He was just a simple carpenter with healing in His hands
But could they really understand, they could not

They listened to the teaching that they heard
They wondered at the mystery of His word
They wondered what He meant, about a Father's plan
They heard but could they really understand

They could not, They could not
Though they tried, they could not
They listened to the teaching about a Father's plan
But could they really understand, they could not

So finally upon a rugged cross
They killed the man who would not suffer loss
And when at last they took what willingly He gave
He died, but could they keep Him in the grave

They could not, They could not
Praise God, they could not
And when at last they took from Him what willingly He gave
Could they keep Him in the grave, could they keep Him in the grave,
Could they keep Him in the grave...

They could not, They could not
Praise God, they could not
And when at last they took from Him what willingly He gave
Could they keep Him in the grave, could they keep Him in the grave,
Could they keep Him in the grave, They could not!!!!
