Help!!!!!

My anti-virus program found a virus on my computer and it cant remove it....I have no idea how to go about getting it off. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.....thanks!!

Turn off your system restore, restart your computer in safe mode and run your anti virus. If you know which file is infected you can scan that file only and it will fix the problem.

How do you do that? I mean I know where system restore is but when I go to turn it off it says that if I turn it off that all restore points will be deleted and I wont be able to undo harmful changes or something like that....and how do you restart in safe mode?? Thank you.
