I think I have one. :( It hurts terribly, and my grandpa is going to tell mom to take me to the docter Tuesday since I'm off school anyway. lol, mom won't be too happy, she had to pay a lot to get my chipped filling fixed a while ago. I found a website that gives informaton about them and how to tell if that's what it is, and I'm pretty sure it is, it's starting to turn brownish red in the corner by the area under the nail, so grandpa said it could be infected. He keeps teasing me saying they are going to chop my toe off , but I don't think they will- will they??? I'm just wondering what the probably will do so I can prepare myself. I think the right toe is starting to get there to, but I'm not sure because I'm so clumsy that I keep stubbing them and it may be because of that, but I'm going to have the doc look at that one too. Any advice is appriciated.

LOL....they won't cut your toe off!! He might send you to a podiatrist if he thinks this problem will be ongoing. But be prepared....its GONNA HURT. I've never had one..I just read bout them as I work. He will have to go in and cut your nail down and removed the ingrown part. He should use anesthesia, but your toe will be very sore and tender afterwards...might feel worse that it does right now. He might suggest you change your footwear to a wider style, a box toe style so your toes aren't cramped together or hitting the ends of your shoes.

Well, at least I get to keep the toe. I think the reason it probably got infected is because I wear sandles a lot, and all kinds of stuff touches my feet. I just hate feet! Feet are gross :D. I hope they use anesthesia if they are going to go in and fix it, because I tried to move the skin a little and it HURT!!! I'm such a baby when it comes to pain! Thanks for the reply. Hehe, I'm kinda scared to go, but then again I don't want to wait for the whole toe to turn brown then fall off. :eek"

Hey..I noticed we both live in California...aren't sandals a wardrobe staple out here?? LMAO!!! Yea, that could be a problem cause our toes are always hitting each other with sandals on. I almost hate shoes that close my feet in!! They feel "suffocated" some how!! Good Luck at the Doctor's office!!

I get ingrowns on both my big toes... they suck, but I HATE HATE HATE all feet... I don't wanna see or touch anybodies and I don't want anybody seein or touchin mine... so I cut my own ingrowns out. I do it about once a month before they get a chance to hurt but I really wouldn't recommend anyone else to do it (didn't mom always say do as I say not as I do). They have methods of doing it now, I hear w/ lasers, so that it doesn't hurt after the first time. They kill the nail bed so that it can't grow ingrown again... but like I said, I hate feet and I detest (ok, so not really, but it still disgusts me) ANYONE who looks at them all day every day. These ppl must really love their work... a little foot fetish maybe? Yeech!

My husband had both on his ingrown toenails on BOTH feet taken out before, but they were bad. Suziebee your's dont sound bad at all, just at the stage of being just 'tender' but I know it dont feel that way now. But if not treated it will get MUCH MUCH worse. To the point a sheet in bed at night touching it you think you are going to die. I had them before too and they were pretty bad, but I got them out myself. When dh had his removed they took off a huge hunk of nail on each side, and he eventually lost both toe nails, but has not had trouble since. The same happened with a cousin, and my best friend.

Have you ever had a pedicure. I get them a couple of times a month. I think that helps a lot. My oldest brother used to have trouble with ingrown toenails. I heard it's from not cutting your tonenails properly. I don't know if that's true or not. I hope everything goes well for you at the doctors.

There is a product called Outgro that you can get at any drug store or Walmart. It softens up the toe nail and takes the soreness away. If you have to get them cut out its not too bad and should be covered by insurance. I had both of mine done.

Thanks for all the replies. :) I woke up this morning, and so far they don't hurt *knock on wood*, but then again I havn't stubbed them on anything. Mom said she doesn't know if I can go Tuesday, depends on if she can get an appointment then, but she will take me. I hope he just gives me antibiotics and that they don't need to be cut out, but whatever stops the pain! I was reading the link catssass posted, and there was good information there, but the part that got me was the, "The doctor will inject medicine where the toe joins with the foot. This will make the entire toe numb." I HATE needles. I have to be held down to have my blood tested with them finger things. It doesn't hurt, just a little sting, but everytime my grandpa goes to get it I go crazy and he has to have mom come sit on me to keep me still. One day I'll get over that... hopefully. I'll have mom pick up some of that outgro stuff tonight at work. Thanks again, and I sympathize for anyone else who has had to put up with these! ;)

I'm just curious as to why your grandpa goes after you to take your blood. lol

lol, because he's diabetic and my grandmother was. My mom is not diabetic but he thinks I may be. Whenever I get headaches or feel dizzy he thinks it's because I have low blood sugar. So far though, all the times he's tested it, I've been fine. Then he likes to take my blood pressure and all that. Hehe, grandpa's always concerned about my health. :)

I have had both sides of both of my big toenails removed! OOWW! You will get 2-3 injections in your big toe. Those hurt like the devil! No lie! Then the podiatrist will remove the side(s) that are infected & ingrown & put Phenol there so that the root will not grow back. Then they will bandage your foot like a big clown toe. It hurts again when your toe is "waking up". You will have to soak it & clean out the channel for about a week & go back to have it rechecked. The ingrown parts have not grown back on my toes, though, so I think it was worth it! Also, make sure to cut your nails square at the top.
Good luck!

The podiatrist(sp) told friend and cousin that it doesn't matter how you cut your nails, if you are going to get them you are going to no matter how you cut them.

2-3 injections ! lol, at least your honest about them hurting. If I do have to get shots, I'de probably here what all doctors say, "This will only sting for a second." And it never does just sting. At least I'll be prepared for the pain. We stopped at Save On and got these little Dr. Scholls ingrown toenail thingys, they didn't have that outgro stuff there. They are kind of like bandaids with this little rubber  nub that goes in between the toe and the nail, it hurt really bad trying to put that on, and I don't even think it's wedged all the way in. But I think the other one is getting ingrown too. When I was kind of tugging at the skin of it, there was like a jag of nail on the edge going up into the top of my toe. I think when I clipped my nails I missed that little spot and it kept growing. I hardly ever clip my toenails, but from now on, I'll let someone else do it so hopefully I don't have to go through this again! Mom said I may go tomorrow because she's not sure if we can go Tuesday, Vetren's daya, but the doctor place is closed today since it's Sunday night. lol, can you tell I'm nervous? Hehe, if anyone hears loud shreaks and screams coming out of Southern California, you'll know I went tomorrow. :p
