OK - this just totally ticked me off!!! I don't agree with everyhing PETA does, but did support their anti-fur campaigns.
No more!!!! I just can't believe that they had the audacity to do this!
Just where would these animals be if they were not being taken care of and bred here?? Their natural environment is being destroyed, and they are being hunted to near extinction. Give me a break!!!
Here's what ticked me off:
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals went ahead and faxed a letter to Horn's hospital bed, urging Siegfried and Roy to retire their animals and build a sanctuary for them.
PETA Vice President Dan Mathews wrote: "The only natural thing that happened on that stage was that this majestic animal lashed out against a captor who was beating him with a microphone because he wouldn't do a trick.
"No matter how much you say that you love the wild animals whom you have confined continents away from their natural homes, you are still the men who have subjugated their wills and natures to further your own careers."

Oh PETA just burns my butt! Throwing fake blood on people in fur coats, and now this. They have the right to their beliefs and to express those beliefs, but they have no right to destroy other's property and if this letter is indeed true, they are totally classless to harp at someone who is recovering from an attack like that.

If this group really had a clue, they would know how well Siegfried and Roy take care of their animails. Matter of fact they have a sanctuary for their animals along with a wonderful natural birthing facility for their tigers.

Well, I can see I am in the minority here.
PETA has a very valid point and I admire them for having the guts to stand up and speak out. If he hadn't been hitting a tiger with a microphone to try and get him to do a trick, he might not have been attacked.
Now the tiger is being quarantined and most likely will end up being put down because its vicious. Sorry, but I feel for the tiger, not the man that was exploiting the tiger and making money off of it.

He wasn't "hitting a tiger with a microphone to try and get him to do a trick" He was trtying to get teh tiger off of him with the microphone and the tiger was trying to help Roy after he slipped. Read this article: (also, it doesn't sound like they would approve of the tiger being put down...)

Tiger Didn't Mean to Hurt Roy, Siegfried Says
By ADAM GOLDMAN, AP
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 9) - The tiger that injured Roy Horn of the duo ''Siegfried & Roy'' had been trying to help the illusionist after he slipped and accidentally harmed him by using too much force, says Horn's partner, Siegfried Fischbacher.

''A cat is a tiger and when he wants to protect his pal he does it the way a tiger does, with his strength,'' Fischbacher said in an interview broadcast Thursday on ABC's ''Good Morning America.'' ''But we are human; we are a little more fragile.''
''The cat realized there was something wrong,'' he said. ''Roy slipped, I run after, all my animal handlers run after, so he was just confused.''
Fischbacher said Wednesday on CNN's ''Larry King Live'' that he had been standing backstage when Horn was wounded by the Royal White tiger named Montecore.
The illusionist tripped and the tiger lunged, grabbing Horn's arm, Fischbacher said. After Horn tried to free himself by hitting the tiger on the head with a microphone, the 600-pound animal took hold of his neck and then dragged him offstage. Show workers set off fire extinguishers backstage to distract the tiger, which then scurried to his cage.

Fischbacher said the tiger didn't intend to kill Horn. If that was the case, he said, ''I wouldn't be here, Roy wouldn't be here.''
According to Fischbacher, Horn muttered after the attack: ''Don't harm the cat.''
Fischbacher hinted at a return to the stage if Horn recovers, saying the duo would ''take a different path, I'm sure, but ... the show is our life.''
The duo's manager Bernie Yuman told The Associated Press early Thursday that Siegfried would never continue to perform without his longtime partner. ''It is Siegfried and Roy and that's the way it began and that's the way it will always be,'' he said.
"The show
is our life."
-Siegfried Fischbacher
''Siegfried & Roy'' debuted in 1990 at The Mirage and earned the hotel-casino about $44 million in annual revenue. The show's 267 employees have been told to find new jobs.
Horn, 59, was injured Friday before a sellout performance of 1,500.
Fischbacher said Horn still can't talk but is communicating through hand signals - one gesture for ''yes,'' two for ''no.''

I totally agree with Awewoman.
I eat meat and wear leather shoes, but I dont think forcing animals to "work" is ethical. Its not like the animals have a choice to be in show business.....And if they did have a choice of being on stage or being home in the wild, which do you think they'd choose???

I think the tigers would enjoy playing with S & R and getting fed and cared for. Alot more then being hunted for their fur, which is what the poachers do. These tigers are rare and the hunters can make lots of money for their fur. They would not be safe in their natural area.

Montecore will not be killed! Siegfried has made that perfectly clear!
If Montecore had wanted to kill Roy, He would have shaken his head and easily broke Roys neck. Even Jack Hanna of the Cincinnati Zoo affirmed this.
I truly believe that Montecore was scared when Roy fell, and tried to take him off stage. If you've ever seen their show, you've seen a movie showing a mother tiger picking up a cub by the side of the neck. People are a lot more delicate than a tiger, though, we have thinner skin and no fur.
All reports say that Montecore walked off stage at his usual pace, as he did every show. If he was attacking, I believe he would not have done this. I think he would have ran off.
Siegfried confirmed this in his interview with Larry King on Wednesday night. He also said in the interview that Montecore would not be harmed.
These men truly love their animals, and if you have ever seen the animals with them, you can tell the animals love the men.
As for the tigers being forced to do work, they are not forced to jump through rings, walk tight ropes, and do other things like that as a lot of other animals used in acts are. Mostly they are on stage to look beautiful, then walk off.
Where would the rare white tigers and lions be without Siegfried and Roy? Probably completely extinct.

PETA are a group of domestic terrorists. And regardless of how you feel about them, it was utterly classless to send a fax "to his bedside". Very, very low, but not surprising from PETA. I'm a big time animal lover. I liked PETA til I found out they were in support of breed specific legislation and the extermination of all pit bulls. That is not an animal rights organization! They are involved in alot of dirty, underhanded things, and I'm glad I found out about them.

what I find to be pretty funny about PETA is how they tell people don't wear this, don't eat this etc. Yet being in the textile industry & knowing what chemicals are put onto materials is how I get my biffest laugh. They don't even realize that some of the chemicals I use is made from animal fats. So while they're out doing their little anti-animal protests etc. & they are wearing something that has been napped, they are still wearing animal by products!!!!!

PETA stated that its letter to Horn wished him a full recovery, but also urged that he and his partner, Siegfried Fischbacher, retire their animals and place them in a sanctuary. "Perhaps Friday's frightening incident will make you realize that a brightly lit stage with pounding music and a screaming audience is not the natural habitat for tigers, lions or any other exotic animals," Dan Mathews, PETA's vice president, wrote to Horn.

There is no way they could aford to care for the tigers with out the show. And they have done so much for them. I dont like people wearing fur (unless its from a food animal like cow lamb etc.) But I think peta sucks.

You know, it is fine to have an agenda, but really! I am glad I don't have a fax machine or they might fax me - I keep my wild animals (my three furr babies) confined to my house all the time (to keep them from becoming road pizza). They lay in my bed all day sleeping, unless of course they go to their automatic scooping litter box to poop or feeder that is constantly full of food. Boy, am I cruel :-)

Regardless of how you feel, please watch the movie if you really think the tigers are well cared for.
I just finished watching the film on dissection. If you own a cat or dog, you may want to watch that one too.
I'm going to go throw up now.
Oh, back to Roy, I just read that they earn something like $44 million a year on their shows. I think they have enough money to build a natural sanctuary!

Why is it you never hear about these PETA people throwing paint on leather wearing Bikers ? Much easier to run up to a women in high heels in a fur coat, I guess.
How about the nimrods who "freed" thousands of minks - didn't bother to rescue them - just busted up the cages ... Many of the animals had to be put down from fighting each other, many were found frozen, starving or hit by cars. The remaining ones loose are attcking domesticated animals ( cats, dogs, chickens...) as they desparetely hunt for food, having no idea how to find it outside of a feed dish. Thats very humane .....

Peta has branch of their business where your your business can be certified animal free. I am an arbonne consultant and we are approved by various companys that we are animal free.
Beauty without cruelty is peta without saying its peta because of the bad name associated with them and how radical they can be http://www.arbonne.com/images/productimages/product_images/animal_logo.gif

I feel this way about PETA & animals. I love animals but I also eat meat so if someone is going to butcher an animal for me to eat I want every part of that animal used so less have to be given some kind of growth hormone to fatten it up quicker. Why just use certain parts of a butchered animal & through away the other stuff when it can be put to good use?

White tigers are not a species but simply an aberrant color variation of Bengal tigers. Recessive genes produce white fur, chocolate stripes, blue eyes, and a pink nose. White tigers appear occasionally in the wild but are at a distinct disadvantage because they lack the camouflage necessary to ensure survival. All captive white tigers are inbred, which has led to serious congenital defects including cataracts, club feet, and near-crippling hip dysplasia. Breeding white tigers serves no conservation purpose and is done solely for its amusement and profit value. While normal tigers are sold for around $500, white tigers can be sold for between $25,000 and $100,000 each.
The entertainment industry, through acts such as Feld Entertainment’s Siegfried and Roy, tries to legitimize casino acts and carnival sideshows with breeding programs for the "nearly extinct white tiger," when in fact they are propagating genetic freaks.
This is also an excellent article on white tigers. Note that the two highest causes of death are human interference and life in captivity.

Thank you for being the voice of reason.
I see Siegfried and Roy as nothing more than pimps. They are exploiting innocent animals for their own personal financial gain. I'm sorry he got hurt, but when you "play" (and I use that term very loosely) with tigers, you will eventually get hurt.

Thank you! I truly am sorry that Roy was hurt. But I cannot condone this blatant exploitation of animals, especially when they claim to be such animal lovers. They also have an elephant who lives all alone at the casino. Her only purpose in life is to be in their act.

they wouldn't even be alive if it wasn't for them. They single handedly made it possible for tigers to survive a few more years.... I feel bad for the guy but he new they were wild and that is why he pleaded with them not to put the animal down. you may be upset that they are "pimping" the animals but they alone are helping the cats be brought out of possible extinction!
