I found out from my daughter that students are being forced to throw their lunches away if they talk during lunch!! OMG You cannot begin to understand how pissed off I am about this! We are in a very low income district so for some of these kids the only decent meals they get each day are breakfast and lunch from school. Well there is a jerkoff in the cafeteria with a bullhorn of all things telling the kids they cannot talk during lunch. For those unfortunate ones that try, they are forced to dump their lunch trays and stand in the corner till their classmates are through eating! I called the school and the principal wasn't in so I am waiting for her to return my call, thankfully she is good about returning calls.
I just cannot believe that someone thinks that this form of punishment is acceptable. It would be one thing if the kids were having foodfights and wasting their food anyhow, but to go without lunch because they were TALKING?!

Forget the phone call. Time to visit the school at lunch time and see exactly what is going on. I can't imagine trying to keep a large group completely quiet for any period of time and making them dump their food is not acceptable. Removing them from the group if they are being loud and bothering others is one thing but to make them quit eating is not acceptable.

Go and see for yourself what is going on and why.

OMG, That is no way to punish a child. Why are they not allowd to speak during lunch time?My daughter and her classmates can talk/eat, they just have to be done in 20 minutes.

Let us know what the principal says.

I would be soo pissed off!! There is no reason for kids to go hungry!! Especially JUST for talking!! I consider lunch part of my child's free tiem at school, and while the kids are not allowed to behave unruly/leave their seat until they are finished, there is no reason kids should not be allowed to have a converstation with their friends while they eat! I am sure none of the teachers would like to be told to shut up, if they wanted to chat with a friend while they ate!! I would do as other have suggest, and visit the school during lunch, and I woudl throw a holy fit if someoen tried to take your child's food away!! You paid for that food, and they have the right to eat it how they wish..the food no longer belongs to the school, once you child takes posseion of it, and they have no right unless you child is throwing food to take the food away from them!!

I hope a bunch of parents get together from your school, talk to the principal, visit school board meetings and complain.

I remember in gradeschool, the cafeteria, had a huge stoplight on the wall, the kids could chat as long as they weren't being really loud if the gree nlight was on, if the yellow light come on that meant to quiet down, kind of a warning, and if the light went red that meant everyone had been too loud, and had to stop taking until the light went green again (usually 1-2 minutes).

The first elementary school my daughters attended they had a traffic light up and when the kids were too loud they put it on yellow for caution when it was on red they shut all the lights off-i was eating lunch with my daughter and this happened i did not know what it meant and was told to quit talking(i went to eat lunch with my daughter to spend time with her and talk to her and her friends) I was really pi$$ed -alot of parents complained ,several of the kids had nightmares and started wetting the bed and not wanting to go to school and the reason they found out was because of the school turning out the lights-In the last school they went to they had cones on the table(different colors to let you know what you could do)the first 15 or so min. a certain color was on the table and as long as that color was there you could not talk at all-This is so stupid to me-they would also put you against the wall or at the silence table-once my daughter was put against wall and had to leave tray at table-I called the school and raised He!! I was told she could have went back to eat after time out but who wants to go back and eat something sitting there for 15 min.-it gets cold and flies get on it or kids hands etc-we have lunchroom monitors at the school and they all are biotches-one told me that I had to be quiet and another told me I could not let my daughter drink my tea-WTH this is MY child-I have complained often and asked why there was not teachers at the table(like when I was in school) and I was told that it was a new law that the teachers have FREE LUNCH TIME and they are not responsible for our kids then-WTH Well sorry to take over this is one of my BIG VENTS too-Good luck! Let us know what happens!

the more disgusted I get!!! I cannot believe they punish kids by making them stay silent during lunch then throw out the food. Why can't they talk? Kids are like little robots all day, and should be allowed to blow off steam a little at lunch time.

All the other stories annoyed me too.

My son in kindergarten hardly eats his lunch. No one gives a dam#. I finally sent a note in to the teacher saying can someone make sure this kid eats or drinks SOMETHING in 6 hours????

No wonder kids flip out. Their meal times are miserable! Rushing through breakfast to catch the bus, a stressful lunch so they can be kicked out on the playground so the staff can eat..

I think the option of home schooling sounds better and better...

Thanks for the advice guys:) I wish I could go to cafeteria today during lunch but I am waiting on a call from the dr's office (explained in OT). If I haven't heard from the principal today I will be in the school in the morning to find out what is going on. One way or another this is going to stop b/c even though it hasn't happened to my child, odds are the kids that it is happening to won't tell their parents for fear of being punished. Soooo that leaves me to stand up for them:D

~~CONFESSION TIME~~

I WAS ONCE ONE OF THOSE 'MEAN' CAFETERIA LADIES.
I WORKED AT AN ELEMENTRY SCHOOL FOR 5 YRS.
IT IS VERY HARD, WELL IMPOSSIBLE & UNREALISTIC TO EXPECT
CHILDREN NOT TO TALK AT LUNCHTIME. I HAD NO PROBLEM
W/ THE KIDS TALKING AS LONG AS THEY TALKED TO THE KIDS AT THEIR TABLE & NOT YELL ACROSS THE ROOM. YES, SOMETIMES THE
NOISE LEVER DID GET VERY HIGH. WE WOULD BLOW A WHISTLE,
USE THE MEGAPHONE & COUNT TO 3 ( ALL THE KIDS HAD TO
USE RAISE THEIR HANDS & USE THEIR FINGERS TO COUNT TO 3)
AT 3 EVERYONE SHOULD BE QUIET.

WE WOULD THEN SAY, NOT YELL, OK, LET'S KEEP IT DOWN,
NO YELLING. IF A CHILD WASN'T FINISHED EATING & LUNCHTIME
WAS OVER, I'D ASK IF THEY WANTED TO STAY & EAT. THERE WOULD
BE SOME CHILDREN THAT ATE SLOW. BUT I ALWAYS MADE SURE THEY GOT RECESS TIME TOO. EVEN IF THEY HAD 10 MIN LEFT TO PLAY.

THE LOUD STUDENTS, WHO PLAYED & DIDN'T EAT, OR JUST
PLAYED AROUND, HAD TO STAY BEHIND & HELP ME CLEAN UP.
WHETHER IT WAS SWEEP, OR COLLECT TRAYS, WIPE DOWN THE TABLES.

IF I SAW ANY CHILD W/O A LUNCH, I MADE SURE THEY GOT FOOD.
THERE WERE A COUPLE OF KIDS WHO DIDN'T HAVE LUNCH OR A PITYFUL EXCUSE FOR A LUNCH (1/2 KETCUP SANDWHICH)I WOULD LIE
TO THE LADIES WHO SERVED THE FOOD, & SAY A CHILD TRIPPED & DROPPED
HIS LUNCH, GET A NEW LUNCH & GIVE IT TO A CHILD THAT HAD NONE.

ALSO THE MILK  THE SCHOOL WOULD CHARGE KIDS FOR MILK.
BUT THERE WERE KIDS THAT DIDN'T DRINK THEIR MILK.
SO 1 MILK WOULD BE BOUGHT MY A CHILD HAVING A 'HOT'
LUNCH, NOT OPENED, PUT BACK, & SOLD AGAIN TO A CHILD
WHO BROUGHT LUNCH
I WOULDN'T MAKE THE KIDS PAY FOR MILK.

******

ANGELSEYES28,
GO TO THE SCHOOL & SEE WHAT'S GOING ON.
THAT ATTITUDE W/ THE KIDS ISN'T RIGHT.
NOT ALL SCHOOLS OR THE LADIES WHO WORK IN THEM
ARE LIKE THAT.:)

See P4J that's the thing. It isn't even one of the cafeteria workers! We have great cafeteria workers luckily. The person doing this was a 4th grade teacher last year but this year he was promoted to head jerkoff. He isn't vice principal but I'm not real sure what his official title is so I will just stick with "jerkoff" for the time being. Anyhow the cafeteria manager even spoke with him and told him he couldn't be making kids dump their lunch and stand in the corner, I guess the talked worked for a day but now he's back to it so I am having to take matters into my own hands which I'm really not in the mood to do but dangit someone has to stand up for these kids!

They are not allowed to make children throw their lunch away. You need to contact the board of education. Something needs to be done.

Angel,

You need to contact the Department of Human Services and the school board to let them know what is happening.

The food these kids are being forced to throw away is paid for by YOU AND ME and I'll be &$^%D^%F if some idiot waste my money that way. Its one thing if the child doesnt want what is being served or they didnt want it all but to make these children go hungry? That is completely uncalled for.

You also need to alert the other parents as to what is going on. Many of these kids have probably not told their parents for fear of getting into trouble

I hope none of the lunch ladies that work at my school see this, but they will take a tray if someone doesn't have enough money on their account and throw it away. I have asked numerous times why they can't scan the cards before the kids go through the line so they can send the kid to the office BEFORE they get the tray of food (if they don't have enough money) instead of doing it AFTER they have already gotten the food. They are throwing perfectly good food away. (I know it is not quite the same, but still it is frustrating.)

PS-Our treasurer, who is in charge of lunch accounts, will almost ALWAYS let a student eat, whether or not there is money in their account and will often times take money out of her own pocket to make sure they get to eat.

HOW CAN THEY STAND THERE & ALLOW A CHILD TO GO HUNGRY ?

WORKING AT A SCHOOL, YOU GET A FEEL AS TO WHO HAS
PROBLEMS AT HOME, LIKE NOT ENOUGH FOOD. 2 BOYS COME TO
MY MIND, THINKING ABOUT THIS.

1 BOY WOULD GO TO SHCOOL EARLY TO HAVE BREAKFAST.
HE SAID IF HE ATE AT HOME, HIS LITTLE SISTER WHO WASN'T OLD ENOUGH
TO GO TO SCHOOL WOULDN'T HAVE BREAKFAST. THERE WASN'T ENOUGH
FOR BOTH OF THEM. :( I ALWAYS KEEP BAGGIES FILLED W/ CEREAL
IN MY POCKET & WOULD GIVE THEM TO HIM TO EAT ON HIS WAY TO SCHOOL.

ANOTHER BOY , PETER, ONCE HAD 1/2 A PEICE OF BREAD W/ KETCUP
ON IT, THAT WAS ALL. HE RARELY HAD LUNCH. I WOULD PUT
ANY FRUIT OF BAGGED FOOD ITEMS ASIDE FOR HIM.
A COUPLE OF TIMES A WEEK, I'D LIE & SAY A CHILD TRIPPED
& GET HIM A LUNCH. I WAS TOLD I COULDN'T PUT MONEY INTO AN ACCOUNT FOR HIM  OR USE MONEY IN MY ACCOUNT FOR HIM

ONE DAY A NEW BOY HAD NO LUNCH.
PETER SHARED HIS LUNCH WITH HIM.

THERE'S NO REASON WHY CHILDREN SHOULD GO HUNGRY AT SCHOOL.

OMG! That breaks my heart!!! :( :(

I don't understand how they'd let kids go hungry either. At my elementary school, they had something for kids who forgot their lunch or lunch money. It was just cheese & crackers but it was better than nothing. It was just for kids who didn't have it that day. If they "forgot" frequently, they'd talk to their parents about it and they gave free lunches and breakfasts to those who couldn't afford it.

Angel, that is INSANE! What a horrible system. I don't know what he could be thinking!

The lunch room can get really LOUD b/c as it goes up, people have to talk louder and louder. So there has to be some kind of order in there, but making them not talk at ALL is just stupid.

They have changed here you used to eat lunch and charge it but they no longer allow it-you just do not eat-this food is already paid for with grants and taxes-let the kids eat regardless is how I feel and for the post that said if the kids did not have money and the ladies threw it away-these ladies are dumb-why not let it get eaten then throw it away-who pays for the food that they throw away-maybe they should charge the ladies that throw it away

Angel is there any update? Did you speak to the principal or go to the school?

This is awful. I helped out in the cafeteria last year and in the office. We always lent money to the kids that didn't have enough and in the cafeteria the kids could talk as long as they didn't scream or throw things and no one went without a lunch or got theirs taken away for any reason.

I spoke with hubby about this last night to get his opinion. My hubby used to work in a school. He said wht they are doing is illegal! If the principal does nothing, go to the super intendant. I hate to say it, but if they don't listen to you you might have to threaten them with takign them to court over it. When schools hear court, they start jumping!

At my son's school, if a child forgets their bagged lunch they are allowed to charge 1 lunch, and must bring the money the next day. The kids are not allowed to call home for ANYTHING they have forgotten.

At the school Ashton goes to they have a keypad system
for the kids to type in their code and if they have
money in their account for lunch then they get it if
they get free lunches then they get it.
But if they have no money in the account they will
get Lunch for 3 days and after the 3 days they
have a line for kids that don't have money to get a
sandwhich, fruit, milk and veggie.

They don't let any kids go hungry and they
don't make them throw away their lunch for talking.
If they did then I would tell them to pay for the
dang lunch instead of taking it out of the parents
pocket just to throw it away anyway.

Before raising hell, I'd definately make a trip to the cafeteria and see with my own eyes what was going on. I find it hard to believe that the kids are expected to be silent throughout the entire meal unless the whole cafeteria had just been completely out of control and is on silence punishment or something. At my ss's school, they do the turning off the lights thing to signal silence and not 1 of them has been traumatized by it!! LOL-! The kids get so loud in there, I see nothing wrong with quiet time to calm them down.

We (as parents) can go to jail, be fined for not feeding our children. What's wrong w/this man????

Is this his form of corporal punishment?

I for one wouldn't stand for it. When I taught I always kept something in my desk or purse if a child forgot their money or lunch.

I think it's the only decent thing to do.

I would report him to the school board and mention this to PTA....When parents rally (sometimes, not always) things will change.

I can't believe that they would knowingly let a child go w/out eating.

Who knows when was the last time they ate?

It's harder to concentrate when you're hungry?

Children get sick and miss school from not getting enough to eat.

I WOULD RAISE HIGH HOLY HOCKEY STICKS W/SOMEONE ASAP.

Call the superintendant, PTA president, local news.

I WOULD DO IT IN A HEARTBEAT. There's no EXCUSE in the world for doing this to a child.

We are supposed to neuture, support and teach while they are in school....NOT DEPRIVE THEM.

This is unreal:mad:

Well guys here is the update. I went to the school today and the principal and I went to the cafeteria. When we got there it was QUIET other than the sound of dishes. Anyhow there were 2 kids in the corner. I told the principal that after dumping their lunch the kids are made to stand in the corner for the rest of the lunch. I swear you could see flames shooting out her ears!
She went over to the kids in the corner and told them to go get another lunch tray. Then she told jerkoff to meet her in her office and as he was walking out she snatched the megaphone away from him and told the kids they could talk to each other just try to keep it down.
I'm not sure what happened from there but my daughter said that they got to talk during lunch which was a nice change. And she said that jerkoff wasn't in the cafeteria either:D
I don't know what went on in the principals office but maybe it worked. If not there is always the news media;)

Wow!!! Way to go supermom!! I can't believe what a jerk that guy is/was to expect kids not to talk during lunch. I can see not letting it get too loud, but that is just crazy. And making them throw away their food!!??!! OMG I would have been livid. When kids act up at lunch at my son's school they just make them go sit at a "time out" table. Stories like this make me appreciate our wonderful school that much more. Good job!!:)

Angelseyes28, you go girl!
This whole thread made me get teary.
Kids that are hungry do not learn. That's why the schools feed
them breakfast and lunch. I noticed that the 2 kids you mentioned, standing in the corner, weren't even your kids. I'm sooooooo
thankful that the principal was able to see this for herself.
Good thing shared all this with her to fix the problem.

Wouldn't you have loved to have been a little bug on the wall in that principal's office with the foghorn teacher!

WTG Angeleyes!
I just wonder how these people that shouldn't even be around kids, get to the top?!?
I am battling the school, but this time, after two years of the same arguement- I am bringing it up to the school board, who had NO idea that what I am fighting has been going on. We all think that our one voice can't be heard or make a differnce, you would be surprised!
You might want to explain to your kids what happened, in a way that they will understand.
I do that with my DD so that she doesn't just think, mom went in, raised hell now it's ok. Just a suggestion.
