Will you get hit by Isabelle? I'm watching NBC at this time and it looks like Isabelle is headed for Georgia to Virginia. It's getting scary. Looks like southern NC will get hit before it heads out to sea. But it has been downgraded to a 4 instead of a 5. Still devastating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dangerous Hurricane Isabel Aims at U.S. East Coast
Sun September 14, 2003 12:02 PM ET

MIAMI (Reuters) - Powerful Hurricane Isabel steamed across the Atlantic Ocean toward the United States on Sunday and forecasters said it would almost certainly hit the Eastern Seaboard late this week.

"We feel pretty confident that someone will (get hit)," said Eric Blake, a specialist at the National Hurricane Center in Miami. "We're forecasting a major hurricane for the United States East Coast."

Forecasters said the storm could strike the U.S. Atlantic Coast anywhere from South Carolina to Maine by Friday, though the most likely track would bring it barreling up the North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland shorelines.

"Even if the center doesn't come near your specific location, the storm is very large and most of the East Coast is probably going to feel this in some way, especially in the mid-Atlantic states," Blake said.

Isabel had sustained winds of 155 mph, making it a strong Category 4 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity. Such storms can destroy coastal homes, rip off roofs, batter the shoreline with a 15-foot storm surge and cause heavy inland flooding.

A tiny boost in strength could make it a rare Category 5 hurricane capable of inflicting widespread destruction -- only three have hit the U.S. mainland in the last century, the Hurricane Center said.

At 11 a.m. EDT, the eye of the hurricane was about 370 miles east-northeast of the Turks and Caicos Islands south of the Bahamas, at latitude 23.7 north and longitude 66.3 west, forecasters said. It was moving west-northwest at 12 mph.

Isabel missed the small islands of the northeastern Caribbean but was churning up dangerous swells that could reach the Bahamas and the southeastern U.S. coast in the next few days, forecasters said.

Isabel's strength fluctuated slightly. It reached Category 5 strength on Saturday, the first in the Atlantic-Caribbean region to hit that mark since 1998, when Hurricane Mitch killed more than 9,000 people in Central America.

Only three Category 5 storms have hit the United States since 1900, according to hurricane center records. The unnamed storm of 1935 killed several hundred people in the Florida Keys. Camille hit Mississippi in 1969, killing 256 people. And Andrew, which became the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history, killed 23 people and did more than $25 billion in damage when it hit the Miami area in 1992.

It figures that something like this would happen while my hubby is on the other side of the country. Guess I just have to hope that it weakens before it gets up this way, because I wouldn't have a clue where to evacuate to.

Hopefully Isabella will not hit the United States and keep out to sea, but T is keeping all in his thoughts and prayers

JUst finished watching the 3 local news stations. It appears at this time that Isabel is a 4 borderline 5 storm and headed to NC coast. If she makes it all the way into Greensboro it will be high winds and lots and lots of rain. The ground will be saturated and the wind will topple the trees. This MAY?? start happening around Thurs. or hopefully later or not at all!!! All I know is she is still 155 sometimes plus winds. She is very scary!!! Hope everyone stays safe!!!

I love being a truckers wife!!!! hate to worry you but no such thing with a c5...it will hit and go way inland before it hits the jet and gets pushed up...long way off so may dissipate before it hits...really hoping that!

It'll hit NC they always do... I'm in NC.....Floyd, Fran & Hugo weren't any fun at all. It looks like if this one doesn't lose any strength and makes land fall, it's going to destroy everything in it's path, plus take a lot of lives. People are brain dead when it comes to riding out these storms. Anyone dumb enough to remain near the coast, is just asking for a death sentence. Unless it dies down, but I doubt it will.

I read people are spending hundreds of dollars boarding up their homes near the coast. Hello~ People, boarding up your house isn't going to save it. The winds will rip your house in shreads....

OMG! My stepson and his wife are in Jacksonville NC! I hope they don't get hit.

I am flying to Fort Lauderdale on Friday the 19th. Is it supposed to hit near there? I hope not. I NEED THIS VACATION!

Actually I hope it doesn't hit any where!

I'm close to Jacksonville, more than likely if it makes landfall, Jacksonville NC will feel the full wrath. You're Step son & his wife will be fine. If it hits. (I'm guessing one of the two is in the Military?)

By Friday you'll know where it'll hit exactly. According to the news, it's possible it'll miss FL.

Glad to know I'm brain dead and dumb. I have rode out every hurricane to come up the east coast since Hugo in 1989 and have no intentions of leaving for Isabel
or any other hurricane. By the way my will and legal papers are all in order.

Just talked to my Mom in NC. She said the Coast Guard Base is closing for the folks that work there. Her and her man are going to pack up and leave. My Mom lives about 45 min from the Outer Banks.

FEMA is already in place in the coastal area. It's still going to be bad hitting 1/2 the NC coast and all of VA coast. It's been warning category since noon. Most everyone has already had a mandatory evacuation. The beaches are beautiful to visit but NO WAY would I ever want to live there year around. Hubby lived in Wilmington in his youth and survived. We are in the middle of the state and thought the trees in the yard were going to cut our house in half. The winds here tomorrow will be 39 to 57 mph:(:(

Seems Isabel passed us by so you'll just have to wait until the big one comes and claims me. Don't worry your "gift" is safely locked inside a bank safe deposit box. Gift wrapped with your name and address on it.
