Harris Teeter officials said it won't accept computer-generated coupons printed from the Internet in response to a recent wave of counterfeiting.
The chain joins supermarket chains including Kroger and Publix in banning the coupons.
Senior Vice President Rod Antolock said Harris Teeter is joining those retailers who have been stung by these counterfeit coupons to protect its customers and vendors.
The latest wave of counterfeit coupons is believed to have started in either Florida or Georgia and has made its way around the Southeast, surfacing most recently in North Carolina.
A consumer survey this year showed that the Southeast is the most active region in using online services for coupons.
