LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Prince Harry passed university entrance exams in geography and art, but will join the army instead of going to university, his father's office said on Thursday.
His grades -- a D in geography and a B in art -- fell short of the requirements of top British universities.
Harry's father, Prince Charles, got a B in history and a C in French in 1967 when he took his "A-levels," the advanced final exams British teenagers sit before leaving school.
Older brother William gained a C in biology, A in geography and B in history of art. The very best candidates gain five A-levels at grade A. The worst pass grade is an E.
Harry, 18, will take a year off before applying to the prestigious Sandhurst military academy, which trains military officers.
"I am very proud of Harry," Charles said in a statement. "He has worked hard for these examinations and I am very pleased with today's results."
Harry spent five years at Eton College. It is one of the most expensive private schools in Britain and stands in the shadow of Queen Elizabeth's Windsor Castle, west of London.
He joined the school in 1998, a year after his mother Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris.
His academic performance was eclipsed by his sporting success and he represented the school in rugby, cricket and polo. He also joined the school's cadet force and was awarded the highest rank of cadet officer in May.
Royal aides say details of Harry's "gap year," the break many British students take between school and further study, will be released next month.
This year saw Britain's highest proportion of top grade passes in the A-level exam's 52-year history, with girls continuing to beat boys.
