I am furious at the school district here. Remember all of
my problems about my son Jason getting bullied at school and
them not doing anything about it. Well his psychatrist
recommended a school that is supposed to be great. Zero
tolerance on bullying and programs to help Jason. So I moved
close to that school, just to get Jason in there. Well, I
went to register him for that school and they are refusing
to take my paperwork. I have bills, a lease, a notarized
statement stating i live there, and my drivers license has
that address on it. All of them have my new addy on it.
Well they say the only thing they will accept is a legal
seperation document from my current dh. He is not even
Jasons father, legal guardian, anything. In the paperwork
I filled out all it said was that I had to have 2 bills with
that addy and my name & a copy of the lease. Well I have all
of that but they are still refusing to enroll him for school
unless i have a legal court ordered seperation document. I
do not have the money to pay a lawyer to get that. If i
wanted a divorce, I do not even have to have legal seperation
papers. So why should i have to have this just to get him
enrolled in school??? I am the only one they are doing this too
also. When I went up to enroll him at the school district, they
already had my name on a sheet of paper saying I had to have this.
So I feel someone at his old school went to the district and is
trying to cause me problems. This really ticks me off. School
starts Aug 7 and orientation is Aug 4. I have called the school
superintendant but they were not in and I had to leave a message.
Any advice would really help. I have told them that I am divorced
from Jasons dad and my current dh has no responsibility for Jason.
That was not good enough.

I would keep calling that superintendent until you get an answer. Or find out when he/she is going to be in and be in the office. Don't leave until he/she talks to you. Who is telling you you need this documentataion? I would ask to speak with that person's manager. This sounds really strange to me, so I think I'd try and go above whoever is giving you this information. Maybe you could have your son's psychatrist call the school, it might help.

Keep after them. If your current husband doesn't have any legal rights over your son then your divorce papers from his father should be enough. This makes no sense. Where do they expect you to enroll him if not there?

What is wrong with these people????????? It is not uncommon for people to be separated and living apart, without a "legal separation". If you have a lease, that should be enough IMO. For them to refuse you with all the documentation they have, it is unreal. I wonder if they would take a notarized letter from your husband saying you are separated. It really ticks me off when they make these things hard on people. I like the suggestion of having the psychologist call the school or the district. Good luck, I have the feeling you will get results from the superintendent. I would even call a city councilman since your child has to go to school and they are denying him the right to go.

Uhm, o.k. since when is your marriage and it's status a prerequsite (sp) for school? That is ridiculous, keep after them for sure.

Hmmm... Have an attorney call them.. It is worth the one hour they will charge you to make that phone call.. Legally they CANNOT refuse him to the school if he lives in the district and has not been kicked out of his previous school.

Try calling members of the school board. Sometimes that helps on stuff.

if the local school board does't answer, then go to the state level. Each state has it's school board, if you don't get help with the state, you know there's always another step up. They cannot deny your child an educations just because of paperwork. They have to enroll them, unless the school is full and they bus him to another school. I don't know what state you're from, but regardless, the law says THE SCHOOL CANNOT DENY THE CHILD AN EDUCATION. They have to enroll him. As I said there's the city, county, state, and federal levels of education. Yep big brother is out there, use him!!!!!!!!!!
