OAKLYN, New Jersey (CNN) -- When police arrested three teenagers early Sunday for allegedly pointing guns at a passing car, they discovered a cache of weapons that included rifles, handguns, swords, and more than 2,000 rounds of ammunition.

The teenagers, 14, 15 and 18, were standing on a street corner when they were arrested at 3:48 a.m. EDT, Oaklyn Police Chief Chris Ferrari said. The driver of the car they allegedly aimed at managed to drive off and alert police, who then drove back and found the youths.

Ferrari said the teens had strapped rifles and shotguns to their backs and tucked handguns in their waistbands. They were carrying 3-foot swords, knives and satchels of ammunition, he said.

Police believe the trio planned to target three other youths, "and then randomly kill as many people as they could come into contact with in the community," Ferrari said.

No one was hurt, he said. "Thankfully we were able to thwart it before anyone got hurt."

The 18-year-old was being held Sunday night at the Camden County Correctional Facility and the others, both minors, were being held at the juvenile detention center.

Oaklyn is a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, just east of the Delaware River.

Charges against the teenagers haven't yet been announced.

The teens went to two area high schools, Collingswood and Haddon Heights, Ferrari said. The 18-year-old was a recent graduate of one of the schools, he said.
