Former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch is still hospitalized on the upper floor of Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. where she has been for nearly 70 days. The Washington Post reports that she remains dazed and traumatized and has only recently started talking on the phone to friends and sending e-mails from a laptop computer.

She is recuperating from a head wound, a spinal injury, and bone fractures that were repaired with an extensive network of rods and pins. Just moving from her bed to a nearby wheelchair can take her an hour. But there is good news. Lynch recently walked more than 100 steps with the aid of a walker. "She is still struggling with pain and her recovery will be slow," family spokesman Randy Coleman told The Post.

The Post reports that Lynch is in a private room at the hospital that is guarded by a military police officer. She receives physical therapy daily--but it takes place during the lunch hour when other patients are not admitted. Her father rarely leaves her side. Lynch is still unable to remember anything about her capture after her Army maintenance unit was ambushed in Iraq on March 23 until her dramatic rescue by a covert U.S. Special Operations unit on April 1.

Find out why Jessica Lynch can't remember the Iraqi ambush or her time in captivity.
