There's a reason the U.S. Senate is sometimes called the millionaires' club. Forty percent of U.S. senators are millionaires, and four Democrats are ultra-millionaires: John Kerry (D-Mass.) $163,626,399; Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) $111,015,016; John Rockefeller, D-W. Va.) $81,648,018; and Jon Corzine, (D-N.J.) $71,035,025.

Those figures, provided by CNN, are based on estimates from the senators' financial disclosure forms released late last week. And the numbers listed above are conservative, since they do not include federal salaries, pensions, bank accounts worth less than $5,000, or the value of primary residences.

Fun facts about the rich and powerful millionaire senators:

--Of the 100 senators, 40 are millionaires.

--Of the 40 millionaires, 22 are Republicans and 18 are Democrats.

--Only six of the 40 millionaires are women.

--The "poorest" millionaire is Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), who just squeaked into this exclusive club with a net worth of approximately $1,016,024.

--Among the 2004 Democratic presidential hopefuls, there are three millionaires: John Kerry, John Edwards, and Bob Graham.

--At least 10 senators have a net worth of less than $100,000.

In case you're curious, U.S. senators and House representatives earn an annual salary of $154,700.

Members of the House and Senate leadership are paid $171,900 annually.
