We have some aquaintences through a good friend, they recently got evicted from their house, he works a minimum wage job (when he bothers to go to work), she never keeps a job for more than 4 months (she gets fired for not showing up)...anyhow...this weekend we were at the friends house and they call and ask if they can hang out there "between shifts" and that they will bring their own dinner...friend says OK, and they show up with STUFFED LOBSTER TAILS and STEAKS!! They had just gotten $900 in FOOD STAMPS :eek: I'm scraping together $3 to buy milk this week and they show up with gourmet food :( :(
I guess the good guys really don't win, huh?

Oh this makes me mad too. Right now we are flat broke and hubby is going to work 12 hour days 7 days a week so that we can catch up.
I don't even have money for bread and milk until Thursday. :(
$900 if food stamps would feed my family for over 2 months. Tired of watching hubby kill himself to feed our family while (some not all) ppl abuse the system. And some ppl really need help and can't even get it!!!!

OHHHHH that would piss me off too. They sound just like my BIL and his g/f.
Now I have to say that I dont see anything wrong with being on food stamps when you really need it, sometimes things just happen that are beyond your control, but to just flat out take advantage of the system, that is wrong!! BIL and his G/F take everything they can get, and they keep popping out babies, she is barely 19 and is having baby #3 in a couple of months. They live with MIL and have no bills, no jobs but are making a killing on foodstamps and whatever else they can get. GRRRR some people. Sorry didnt mean to vent in your thread :)

OMG... $900 in food stamps?! How many kids do they have? I don't think me and Hubby have even HAD $900 in our checking acct. even with ME working.
We do good to get groceries at all. I think I'm jealous.
It's no different than Isaiah's "Mom" and her Hubby... they only had Isaiah and Nick so that she could get MORE Wic, Welfare, and Food Stamps. I think they get like $1200 a month, something like that. Neither of them work, Isaiah is 2, Nick is 8 months old (I think). Keisha is 18 and Danny is 23.
I'm doing something wrong...   :(

$900 in Food Stamps???? Unless they have a large family or were reimbursed for an under-issuance in a previous month, that sounds like an excessive amount. I'd be asking some questions as to how they got so many Food Stamps for one month.

$200 of it was under-issuance from last month but that would still mean they are getting like $700 a month. They have 3 kids, 13, 8 and 1. I'm wondering how they get so much too...
It seems like our system pays people to be lazy and not go to work while others work their butts off and just barely get by and don't get a thing from the system but more taken out of their paycheck to give to some else. The system is so unfair. I'm for helping people that needs it but I don't agree with rewarding people for doing nothing.

Ok so she is wasting her food stamps on lobster tails and what happens at the end of the month when there isn't any milk in the house. I understand your anger at her. Obviously she doesn't realize that this is not an unending benefit. And when the 20th of the month comes what is she going to do if there isn't any cereal in the house? Blame it on the lobster tail??

I'll tell you what, they are lucky to be living in a state who offers so much in foodstamps. It would be a cold day in hell before a family of 5 gets that much in my state. A family of 5 will get 300 if that. You can call yourself lucky if you even qualify.

I almost completely agree with you donnag except for two points:
It DOES matter what they are eating. LOBSTER??? Come on – how can anybody rationalize needing food stamps when they are buying lobster at around 25 - 30 bucks a piece. Even if it is only for two, that is 50 –60 dollars for one meal. I can stretch 50 bucks a heck of a long way – that is potentially 5 dinnertime meals and a couple of boxes of cereal at my house, not ONE meal!
$900 in food stamps is not a supplement either. I do not know any family that needs $900 worth of groceries per month – even my brother, who has six kids and a fiancee that does not work.
My agreement with you is that most people on assistance truly need it and are using it in an honest and wise manner. I would never question most of them. But those that are eating lobster and dressing their kids in FUBU and Tommy outfits are going to raise eyebrows.
On a positive note – GOOD FOR YOU…..going back to school is probably going to be the best thing you do, both for your family and for yourself. I know how hard it is, and I wish you the best of success.
Donnagg123
I am all for people getting the food stamps if they need them. I just don't think people should get as many as this couple did. That amount would feed hubby and me for months. They are not to furnish the best of everything for a few while others get nothing . Sometimes people that just won't work get them and that is what bothers me. People have jobs but just skip work ,then they don't make much so they get food stamps and everything else. That's the ones that bother me.Others that work their butts off and have low paying jobs are told they make to much to receive help. That's what sucks. There's something wrong when old people skip eating or have to decide between buying groceries or medicine they need but they don't get food stamps to help them, while people that are capable and just won't do anything gets it .

i think the amount u get goes by the income as well as the prices in your area... hubby and i recently were put on food stamps, well right now its me and the 2 boys actually, but for the 3 of us we get 250 ish a month. And prices around here are pretty cheap though, in NY when i was calling asking about how to apply we were eligable for 455 a month, which is why i think it goes somewhat by what the prices are in the area. 200 is just about what i spend on groceries for us though, currrently with my grandparents so that feeds all 5 of us just about. On every shopping trip (usually go once a week) my oldest son is allowed 1 goodie... thats it, if its a box of donuts, then so be it but its only 1 item for the week. Very rarely will he get more then 1 unless its a sale, and I usually have coupons for even the item he picks, lol. I'm a coupon queen and also Sav A Lot is a great place to get meats, when they had a great sale and packs of steak where only .20 higher then the chicken.. WE GOT STEAK... a nice treat for every once n awhile but no way do I pay full price for ANYTHING. if its not on sale, or i dont have a coupon then its not coming home with me.
Dont know HOW they manage to get so much but maybe they'll tell me some tips? I'd love to be able to feed my son gourmet food, lol lucky for me he loves lunch meat, hotdogs, and his favorite... HAMBURGS lol

my husband and I were talking about this the other week.
a women we knew from Soccor days was 2 people infront of us at Food for Less, her total was 219.00 she had to pay $5.49 cash for hot foods the rest was in food stamps. When I saw what she was packing in her bags as we were packing together I was outraged and keep it inside till my husband and I got outside.
ALL SNACKS, 4 bags of chips, 8 boxes of juices, sodas, rice kripy treats 4 boxes, big cake, cookies of all sorts and tons of cereal. several gallons of milk and water and kool aide.
besides the chicken meal there was no "food" such as meats, fish or staples.
So we thought that food stamps should be regulated like WIC in some ways. A certain amount must be spent on fruits/vegs and milk. I understand some people are vegitarians and jewish with food restrictions but that was absurd to us.

People are only supposed to buy certain things with foodstamps but there is no one monitoring it. If you need foodstamps then you should not be buying these types of things. I can see if one night they decide to buy something like steak (chuck steak which is cheap) or a frozen lasagna or something but lobsters, give me a break. Its ridiculous! I don't understand how they are getting $700 a month. They better hope it is not a mistake because they will be apying it back!

definately know what you are talking about....my county has the highest payout for food stamps in this area so where do the GOOBERS come to live but in Rawlins County....We have families....whole families that come and are on SSI and are 25 to 30 years old and cant read or write yet get SSI and we work our butts off just so they can lounge.....I call them my walking tax dollar.....however i do get some satisfaction in knowing they will retire on nothing while i will at least have something........

I was going to stay out of this but I don't think I will. My husband is missing half of his back and I am his care taker (fun job but doesn’t pay well:rolleyes: ), before he was hurt he had a darn good job and made enough money to make us comfortable, but then he had an accident and our world changed. He is disabled and on disability (so we do pay taxes at the end of the year), and he is 39 yrs old there is no way he can work at anything, and I am kind of tied down because of him. We held off from going on assistance for over a year after he was hurt because of the stigma and shame of food stamps and public assistance yes the system is abused by people, I think sadly that any system that is set up to help people in need is abused by people that want a free ride or something for nothing, or more than they should get, but I am getting so sick and tired of the good people who just need a helping hand being lumped in with the greedy ones. Yes I buy snacks (on sale) I will buy steaks (on sale) and anything that I would normally eat, do we eat like the Rockefellers No do I buy lobster no that would be nuts. And what gets me steaming is the looks people give and comments (sometimes) that people say, they don’t know me or my situation or my families, they just assume that I am another one of those “walking tax dollars at work” It really makes me mad to have so many people lump every one on public assistance together. So I guess through no fault of my own or my families we are just another one of those Goobers on public assistance that won’t retire on anything either.

Things like this really irk my you know what & gets my blood boiling! This is so freaking wrong!
I'm over here panicking because my bills will be paid late. My husband was unable to work for nearly two weeks because of illness (he doesn't get paid time off). Right now, I have my car in the shop...it's going to cost around $325.00 (I've had my car almost 9 years & I've had minimal problems with it so I'm not complaining about that). I just paid the car note on my hubby's car, car insurance & the rent. I make good money but it only goes so far when there's only one of us working. (Steve goes back to work tomorrow. Amen!)
I'm over here scraping pennies together to buy gas for the car & groceries.
Don't get me wrong. There are people who truly need food stamps & I don't have a problem with that. I don't want to start up some crap but I think there are certain foods that should not qualify to be purchased with food stamps, like lobster tails.

That makes me mad too...My daughter really could use some food stamps and she can`t get them for her & my grand daughter Social services said she makes to much money,,,Thats bull...she makes 6.00 a hour for 30 hour week,,,car,,rent,,,lights,,daycare..she is always in the hole..but she makes to much money..with no Child support from babys daddy...The system stinks big time,,,I`d rather my taxs money go to help someone that is trying to help their selfs than someone that wont work....
sunie and seawinds, your families and others like you are exactly what I'm talking about. One family has someone in an accident that causes them to not be able to work and the other one working for not enough to live on. You are who I'm saying the stuff should go to. Not to the able bodied people that just won't work cause they have figured out a way to make more staying home than working. I also think the people that really need the food stamps won't buy all the expensive stuff and junk food cause they know they need to stretch them to where they can eat all month not just a couple of meals .

From my friend Bella who is lurking - maybe she'll register one day! LOL - She e-mailed the IRS and will have a link for ya'll who want to report this shortly.
Hey, Kel.........on the second page they are talking about this woman and her family who get $900 a month in food stamps. Do me a fav and respond to NASCAR38 for me. He raises a good point and I wanted to help him with something. He said that he knew someone working under the table every day yet that person still gets full disability........unfair, etc. So what I want to say to NASCAR38 in response to his post is the following:
As we all know, working "under the table" is an offense punishable by fines and in some cases jail time. The Internal Revenue Service has this program where you can report an abuser and they (the IRS) will in turn give you what they call a "Finder's Fee" which is a certain percentage of what the offender earned "under the table." (A friend of mine did that to her ex-husband who was running two books-the truthful ones and the ones he would show the IRS. She reported him and got $9K for her troubles.)

Ok I'm afraid I may be yelled at for this but we were on asssisstance last year around this time and I hated getting food stamps. But it was very good for our family that we could get them. However ours were only recieved for 2 months until my husband found a new job. But they do give you a lot we had 3 children, 1 of which was an infant, and we got 600 a month in food stamps. Way more than we ever would have normally spent. So we ended up stocking up on frozen and canned foods. In our case though my husband and I both worked full time and I had just had a baby and my husband had lost his job. So I guess we got back a little of what we had put into the system. There are plenty of people who abuse it which I completely think is wrong and someday when some people may really need it, it may not be there when it is really needed due to those inconsiderate people who abuse it!

what you did was rather correct.
You bought food that were ediable.
You bought food to have in your home when it needed for meals for yourself and children.
you did it right. :)

That is what it is there for... a hand up not a hand out.... It's for people who are trying to feed their family, not abuse the system by draining whatever they can and popping out child after child jsut to get more. After paying into the system, it's only fair that when you need it, it is there. There are people who really do need it and can't get it....

I understand some people are vegitarians and jewish with food restrictions but that was absurd to us. Just a thought on this, What would you be saying about this woman if you knew this woman and her family had just lost their house to a fire or tornado. And they where living outside, with no shelter or electric or running water. Maybe her husband had left her when all this happen and she had just gotten her food stamps. And she really wasn't thinking about nutrition. Actully she wasn't thinking at all, because she was so worried about her family. And she just wanted them feed cause thats all she could do at that momment. My point is You really don't know what someone elses life is like or what they are going through, because your not them, and you don't think like they do, or feel the way they do. I just think it's better to give the person empathy and pray that she gets out of her problems.
