My dog is getting spayed tomorrow

My 1 and 1/2 yr old Beagle is getting spayed tomorrow. I feel so bad for her. Part of me doesn't want to do this, but I don't want to deal with her being pregnant and also her period again. I just don't like seeing anyone in pain, especially someone I live with. Hopefully the pain medicine will help her, but I know she will be hurting for a few days. I just wondered if anyone has had this happen to their dog around this age and how recovery went? Also, how was your dog after the surgery? I know tomorrow will be an emotional day for me. Thanks for the help. I need all the help on this please.

But-To answer your question-I have a lab/chow mix-she will be 7 this fall. We had her spayed when she was 2 1/2 to 3 yrs old(ok I cant remember the excact age) She did really well. She was sore for a few days and that was it. We just had to watch her cause they like to lick the owie(incision)(eww) but its their natural instint to do. And we tried to not let the kids be to rowdy around her for a few days too.

We had our dog spayed right after we got her from the humane society. She was about 1 1 2/years old (she's 2 now). She stayed overnight at the vet's (make sure you have them give her a pain shot after the surgery, it's a big help) and she was just fine when we picked her up the next day. She was just a bit tired, that's all.

Sometimes, after the surgery, you might notice that the scar area may become a bit red and inflamed after a few days. This is quite normal. The vet can give you some antibiotics to treat this (happened to our dog) and it will go away very quickly with no adverse affects whatsoever.

I was a vet tech for a while, so I pretty much know what to expect and what to do. Don't worry, your precious doggie will be just fine!!

It's not as bad as you are thinking it's going to be. Dogs don't seem to be in as much pain like people do when they have had surgery. One of my dogs was fixed and she acted like nothing was wrong other than she just wasn't as active for a few days. I took the stitches out myself. :) They didn't even give me nothing to give her for pain. Don't worry so much, just keep in mind you are doing the right thing.

I had to take away Biscuit's (our dog) food and drink last night at 9pm and then I have to take her to have surgery. We don't get along anyways cause we are girls and have attitudes!! LOL!! But I do love her and don't like her in pain. Cab92, have a safe drive down here. Hope Austin and I won't be in AZ when you are visiting. We are going July 2nd to the 16th.

Thanks Cab92. I meant to tell you, We found out a couple of days ago that my youngest sister (Jennifer) is pregnant. She's not sure how far along, but thinks 4 weeks. She won't have a sonogram for 2 more weeks. So her and her husband are just thrilled and so is the rest of the family. So our kids will be 7 months apart.

Good for you!!!! :) I wish that MORE owners would have this done. There are WAYYYYYY too many strays running around and too many dogs and pups that have to be put to sleep (yeah--- more like suffocated) bcuz ppl are too selfish to have their dog spayed or neutered.

Don't worry. I worked at an animal hospital for several years, and it really doesn't take long for recovery. I've also never seen any commplications from this type of surgery. You're doing the right thing for your dog--unspayed females can get nasty infections later in life (which I'll refrain from explaining in detail;) ). It's much better to cause a very minimal pain now than a great deal of pain later. Plus, I'm sure she doesn't like being in heat with no outlet. I repeat, you are doing the right thing; just keep telling yourself that you are being a responsible pet owner by doing this.

Mimi thought she was SuperDog two days after her surgery. I think it's easier on older dogs. The puppy stage is winding down and they'll be less apt to hurt themselves. JMHO!

She may come home groggy but by the next day she'll be her old self. Dogs recover very quickly. Just use the lampshade so she doesn't pull out her stitches.

Thank you all for thinking about my dog. I was very emotional (wonderful pregnancy hormones) dropping her off. I could not stop crying, It was hard seeing her in a cage around other dogs. Just felt sad for her. She was scared. I picked her up later and she was just out of it. All she's been doing is resting and I can tell she's just in pain. I hope tomorrow is a better day for her. I did notice that every where she lays, there is yellow stuff from where she was lying. It's the yellow stuff (forgot the name) they put around wounds. I didn't know that would be getting all over stuff.

Cab92, my other sister doesn't really say much in the first place, but I think we all can tell it bugs her that she has two sisters pregnant. My younger sister, is like 4 weeks pregnant and she doesn't want to read or look at anything related to pregnancy, because she want's to hear the heartbeat before she gets excited. She's still in shock.

I hope everything is going well for you and your pet. It's a stressful time. Pets seem to be slugish for a couple of days then, back to their "old selves".

Jamie-Westie was done when we p/u from shelter. He was about 6 years old. Hasn't/didn't have any complications from it. Stitches kind of bothered him, that was about it.

Hot Toddie-Toy Pomerania was a little over a year when he was done. He was up to his old "tricks" by day 2 and haven't heard a word/complaint since. He's the daredevil in the family................FLIES FROM ROOM TO ROOM.

I'm sure everything will work out fine. Just watch eating habits, bathroom, any "strange" discharge that's not normal w/what she already is having. I'm sure she'll be up in no time and be back to part of the family.

Cab92, how did it go with your dog today?
Our dog is doing alot better. She seems to be acting like her normal self again. She's still resting alot, which is great for us! She started eating her food today. I know this is the best thing to do. I just have to keep telling myself that.

Glad to hear that. Ah, you had to leave her there. Bet that's hard. That's good for her though, so she can get her rest without the kids bothering her. Some reason Biscuit just had a hard time with it. She looked like mindless zombie (Austin (DS) said that, lol) Just so glad that she's better today. I know little dog will be alot better tomorrow. Please let me know how she is tomorrow.
