Gerbil loose in my home

This is the second time in two weeks that I have had a gerbil loose in my home. They are my DH's, he is deployed. So I have been putting up with them for 6 months. 2 weeks ago 1 of them got out, there are two, today I come home from classes and teh other one is out. My cat is useless at finding them (I thought cats liked to find and kill these things.) So now I have to stay up trying to find this RAT thing and get no sleep again to night. Does anyone know a good way to find this thing? I am ready to let them both go and just tell my hubby they gat out and must have ran out of the house

I had a hamster that would get out all of the time, my dad finally found where it was getting out at, and covered it with duct tape.

It will come out when it gets hungry, just make sure there is no other food where it can reach it. It will not hurt you, just make weird noises during the night..my daughters got out on a regular basis(with some help i believe) and was always "found" wihtin a day or so.

Lol! if your cat isn't willing to help I have no clue how to find them, you could try a mousetrap....just kidding!!!;)

Our hamster got out while we were away one weekend, our cat found it but it was under my dishwasher and we couldn't get to it and neither could the cat, so I waited until the house was quiet and I put his cage by the dishwasher, my family was laughing at me, dh was like 'yeah right, it's just going to come out and climb right in it's cage':rolleyes:

I feel your pain!...We got in from shopping today and we have a hamster loose. Usually he goes behind the dryer in the laundry room, but no luck today. They are great at hiding. I don't know what else to do at this point.

I found the other one under my couch and it had shreaded my good slippers I WAS SO MAD!!!!! If they weren't my dh's I would let the cat loose on them in a room where they couldn't hide

Gerbil-Yogurt Salad
5-6 gerbils or more
1/4 cup Olive oil
3-4 cloves garlic
2-3 tsp. salt
Enough Plain yogurt (a Typical amt. in Turkish recipes) (not sure what is
meant by this but I assume to taste)
Peel gerbils and grate them using a food processor (bones can be removed and saved for a hearty stock later). Cook them in olive oil until they soften. To microwave use less oil. Let cool. Mash garlic with salt. Mix it with a little yogurt and add to the gerbil mixture. Gradually add and mix more yogurt to the gerbil mixture. You want to try to get a thick body to it but don't let it get to liquidy. You can add more garlic and salt to taste.

This is an absolute riot!! Hope you enjoy it!! If you have raised kids (or
been one), and gone through the pet syndrome including toilet-flush burials
for dead goldfish, the story below will have you laughing out LOUD!

Overview: I had to take my sons hamster to the vet.

Heres what happened:
Just after dinner one night, my son came up to tell me there was something
wrong with one of the two hamsters he holds prisoner in his room. Hes
just lying there looking sick, he told me. Im serious, Dad. Can you
help? I put my best hamster-healer statement on my face and followed him
into his bedroom. One of the little rodents was indeed lying on his back,
looking stressed. I immediately knew what to do.
Honey, I called, come look at the hamster!
Oh my gosh, my wife diagnosed after a minute. Shes having babies.
What? my son demanded. But their names are Bert and Ernie, Mom! I was
equally outraged.
Hey, how can that be? I thought we said we didnt want them to reproduce,
I accused my wife.
Well, what do you want me to do, post a sign in their cage? she inquired.
(I actually think she said this sarcastically!)
No, but you were supposed to get two boys! I reminded her, (in my most
loving, calm, sweet voice, while gritting my teeth together). Yeah, Bert
and Ernie! my son agreed.
Well, its just a little hard to tell on some guys, you know, she informed
me. (Again with the sarcasm, you think?)
By now the rest of the family had gathered to see what was going on. I
shrugged, deciding to make the best of it.
Kids, this is going to be a wondrous experience, I announced. Were about
to witness the miracle of birth.
OH, gross!, they shrieked.
Well, isnt THAT just great!; what are we going to do with a litter of tiny
little hamster babies? my wife wanted to know. (I really do think she was
being snotty here, too. dont you?)
We peered at the patient. After much struggling, what looked like a tiny
foot would appear briefly, vanishing a scant second later. We dont appear
to be making much progress, I noted.
Its breech, my wife whispered, horrified.
Do something, Dad! my son urged.
Okay, okay.
Squeamishly, I reached in and grabbed the foot when it next appeared, giving
it a gingerly tug. It disappeared. I tried several more times with the same
results.
Should I call 911? my eldest daughter wanted to know. Maybe they could
talk us through the trauma. (You see a pattern here with the females in my
house?)
Lets get Ernie to the vet, I said grimly.
We drove to the vet with my son holding the cage in his lap.
Breathe, Ernie, breathe, he urged.
I dont think hamsters do Lamaze, his mother noted to him. (Women can be
so cruel to their own young. I mean what she does to me is one thing, but
this boy is of her womb, for Gods sake.)
The vet took Ernie back to the examining room and peered at the little
animal through a magnifying glass.
What do you think, Doc, a c-section? I suggested scientifically. Oh,
very interesting, he murmured. Mr. and Mrs. Cameron, may I speak to you
privately for a moment? I gulped, nodding for my son to step outside. Is
Ernie going to be okay? my wife asked.
Oh, perfectly, the vet assured us. This hamster is not in labor. In fact,
that isnt EVER going to happen... Ernie is a boy. What?
You see, Ernie is a young male. And occasionally, as they come into
maturity, like most male species, they um....um....masturbate. Just the way
he did, lying on his back. He blushed, glancing at my wife. Well, you know
what Im saying, Mr. Cameron. We were silent, absorbing this. So Ernies
just... just...Excited, my wife offered.
Exactly, the vet replied, relieved that we understood. More silence.
Then my viscous, cruel wife started to giggle. And giggle. And then even
laugh loudly.
Whats so funny? I demanded, knowing, but not believing that the woman I
married would commit the upcoming affront to my flawless manliness. Tears
were now running down her face.
Its just... that... Im picturing you pulling on its...its...teeny
little... She gasped for more air to bellow in laughter once more. Thats
enough, I warned. We thanked the Veterinarian and hurriedly bundled the
hamsters and our son back into the car. He was glad everything was going to
be okay.
I know Ernies really thankful for what youve done, Dad, he told me.
Oh, you have NO idea, my wife agreed, collapsing with laughter.
2 Hamsters: 10 bucks...
1 Cage: 20 bucks...
Trip to the Vet: 30 bucks...

I can tell you how to catch the gerbil.. get a ten gallon bucket or large trash can and sit it in the middle of the room you hear him in...put some of his food in the bottom of it then lean the broom handle on it so he can climb up to the bucket, he will climb in but wont be able to climb out( works good with a tall trash can) btw, thanks, i got a kick out of all the posts.

I used to be a manager in a pet store. i also raised "rodents" for the store.This(other post)is how we caught them if they got out and it worked most of the time. It might work for you too. Wish i was there to help you, I know what it is to be leary of animals, but rodents im not afraid of. lol

OK, i didnt see if anyone else had posted this. the thread was too long.

but here is what we used to do when our hamsters got loose....

make a trail of sunflower seeds (or whatever the gerbils like)

leading up a board.....prop the board up on the rim of a deep bucket or pail. deep enough for them to not be able to get out of when they fall in, but not deep enough so they get hurt when they fall in.

you may have to leave it for a couple of days (never took more than 3 or 4 from what i recall) but it should work
