I heard this discussion started on a radio talk show and I was just wondering what everyone thought about it. It is the one where he gets God's powers for the day.

I just saw on the local news where I live that on the Movie...God gives Bruce this phone-number to call him.....well the same phone-number in our state is for a Church and the Pastor's first name is Bruce.....What a situation. The pastor said he has dozens of calls asking to speak to God.....He said on the news that He is happy to share about the real God with anyone who calls...
I thought that was interesting.....

I'm a Christian, and I went cause my freind wanted to go. The movie was great. Sure the guy yells out stuff about how he hates God, but I think the whole moral of the movie was that humans can't be God because nobody knows the mind of God. We all from time to time get angry at God because we don't win the lottery or we are late for work, the movie simply showed how things would be like if a single human being were in charge. Sure it was full of swearing, but it was a great comedy, and I was not offended one bit.

I haven't seen the movie, but the impression I got from the trailer is that it's not meant to mock God, but to show what happens when humans try to "play" at being God. In that context, would it still be considered disrespectful, since it's meant to show that God's powers are beyond what humans can handle?
Aside from that, I'm not a big Jim Carrey fan. I probably won't go see it unless my kids nag me enough to take them.

There are two sides to this I guess on one hand the concept is too silly to be offended by and on the other I dont think God should be taken so lightly, and that is why people are offended... LOL does this make sense? Its hard to say what you man on the computer....

I probably won't see it unless they show it on TV and all the language is edited.
I did see liar, liar and the one where his life is a tv show. I enjoyed them both, but language was edited. but i'm most certainly not a fan of his.
oh god and oh god book too....loved them. been looking at all the video stores trying to find them.

I saw the movie with my children. We are Christians and I was a little leary of seeing it also. I loved it. It has a great moral to the movie and shows that just because we don't understand something it doesn't mean that God is not paying attention to us. He always is there and knows everything about us.It showed how he Hears our prayers and does what is best for us not what we want him to do. I thought it was handled great, also Jim surrenders to God so how can anyone say that he mocks God in this film. I also know that the director of the film is a Christian himself which is what made my decision about seeing it. I for one am glad that my children and I saw it.

This may be straying off the topic a little...
but does it bother anyone else when someone in the movie business professes to be a christian but works in or with a movie that has cussing and immoral behavior?

I think we all do to a point. But there are those who separate their business lives and their Christian lives. It sad. We think that if we leave God out of business, we will be more successful. When in fact our entire lives will be so much more blessed by living our whole life according to God's will. We might not have as much money, or then again we might, but we will have a peace that money can't buy. Oh...the blessings we throw away.

in my opinion...(not condoning immoral behavior)...if it brings even one person to God then can it not be an instrument of God? as long as the message is there? such as comtemporary christian artist getting bashed for not sticking to hymnals but using heavy metal to reach those that are lost.
i do not have to agree with someone's methods for them to be sucessful. i have not watched bruce almighty but i did watch dogma. now that is one movie that could be taken as totally sacriligous...but it had a message. the path of the lamb is not appealing to some and is turned off without the least bit of attention paid to the message. whether it is wrong or right...i don't know. it is told that it is bad to follow a bad teacher, but who am i to judge who is just or injust.
i am probably rambling....lol....and lost my message in here somewhere....like someone said earlier in another post....it is hard to make your words sound exactly right....hmmmm....just my thoughts out loud.
peace to all

I am a Christian and I need to know from anyone who saw the movie if they take God's name in vain?
You know the gd word. I have been convicted that I should not be supporting of this language by people I'm in contact with or movies.
If it means never going to the movie theater then that's what I have to do. I want to know if anyone else feels this way?
My husband thinks I'm a little extreme with this but I feel that Jesus hung on a cross for me and I didn't deseve it, and that the holy spirit who is living inside of me is grieved when I don't stand up for my Lord and Savior......Thanks for reading and I would like some input.

Stuff like this bothers me allot. It reminds me of how our young men have to go fight wars and kill others. It says in the 10 commandments Thou shall not kill...........to me it seems like a no win situation...damned if they do, and damned if they don't, as the old saying goes.
And this movie I know I would love to see it, because he is one of my most favorites. And who doesn't love a good comedy...but will I feel guilty afterwards for laughing at God's expense?

I totally agree with you. I have been around people that say the gd word and I just cringe. Not that I'm better than they are. And I'm by no means a proper Christian like I would like to be, but that word sends cold chills up my spine. I started asking people that say that how does it feel to cuss out God? I honestly think they don't realize what a awful thing they are saying and need it pointed out to them. They might tell you to kiss their butt, but then again the might learn something.

Sorry, but I disagree with this statement you made to me. Because there are lots of things here on the face of the earth that I'm sure God would disagree with, but yet they are here anyway aren't they?
And I didn't say it wasn't a good movie. I only said that I might feel bad afterwards for enjoying something like this.

**"Bruce Almighty" (Universal)
Be-careful-what-you-wish-for comedy about a frustrated TV news correspondent (Jim Carrey) whose life is changed when God (Morgan Freeman) entrusts him with divine power after the reporter angrily accuses the Almighty of being asleep at the wheel. Despite its lighthearted irreverence, director Tom Shadyac uses humor to explore such issues as free will, and offers a positive image of personal faith rare in Hollywood flicks. An instance of rough language, minimal profanities, some crass humor and an implied sexual encounter. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is A-III -- adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG-13 -- parents are strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
I think they are saying is ok to see for adults and kids over 13.

I saw it last night and I thought it was one of the funniest movies I ever saw. I laughed so hard I about fell on the floor.
My hubby and I didn't think it was irreverent in any way. At least not to God, maybe to the other people but the lead character learned a very valuable lesson in the end. It was a story with a message of good which is few and far between now a days.

well this is my opinion on this movie....
My family and I will not be going to see it. From what I get from seeing the previews....the guy who plays God goes on vacation and jim carrey takes over. And he uses God's power to make his girlfriends boobs bigger etc.(which is TOTALLY wrong). Perhaps he does good stuff with the powers also, but the fact is that I dont believe that part is right. From what I saw, he also teaches his dog to pee in the toilet. If he's using God's powers for that, that is also wrong.
My pastor spoke about this movie a couple of sunday's ago....and he said that this movie is blaspheming(sp?) God. It is mocking God, by using His awesome powers to do stuff that they shouldn't be used for. My pastor also said that there was an interview in a magazine with Jim Carrey and when they asked his feelings/thoughts on God, he replied something to the effect that he didn't know much about God and didn't know what his thoughts were on God etc. In my opinion, to truly play a role that does justice to God or Jesus, you need to know about both of them. I think it is not doing God justice or making Him happy by playing a part dealing with Him and totally mocking Him and what He can do.
Everyone else has their own opinions on this, but as far as Im concerned I want to live my life all-out for God, and I will not go and see a movie like this. The same is also true for rated R movies, or movies with cussing, nudity, etc. Seeing movies like these just opens the door for the enemy and lets the devil into your homes and lives. As it says in the Bible....God does not want you to be lukewarm because He will spit you out. You are either cold or hot. And I am not going to be lukewarm! God Bless You All!!

My husband and I are religious, we go to church every Sunday and do other things in the church.
My church gives the ratings on movies but doesn't tell us to go or not to go, we use our own descresion.
Lots of times I have seen Christians get things wrong when someone tells them about something second hand.
In the movie, God doesn't go on vacation. He gives Jim Carrey's character powers to be "like" God to see how he can run things for awhile. At first the character goes wild and does some stupid things, wouldn't we all but that is a lesson on human weekness. Then when he starts to answer people's prayers with all yeses he finds out how dangerous it can be for everyone to have their prayers answered to get everything they want, another lesson. He finally messes up his life by being selfish and getting everything he wants by stepping over people and being self-centered. Then he learns he is wrong and is making people unhappy and he repents and prayers that God would take the powers back.
I think it's really a good movie since it shows people praying and looking to God to help them. When was the last time you have seen Hollywood mention God in a movie let alone showing people asking God for help and praying? If we focus on only a few dumb things in the movie we are throwing the baby out with the bath water.

While hollywood may not make mention of God and praying much anymore...The making of a movie about God that contains vulgar content and language doesn't impress me one bit. I don't feel that the movie is making fun of God...but it is anything but Godly! Edit out the language and sexual content and I'll watch it. We don't have to trade off our values, although we do just about any time we step into a movie show, step into a video store, or simply turn on the TV. We have traded off our values for years. Oh..this movie only has a few cuss words...that movies only has a little sexual content...so on and so forth...until we have reached the point that there are few movies that we can watch. It didn't stop at the theater...now it's spread to the TV. Even commericals are starting getting bad.
The simple fact is...ANY movie above a 'G' rating isn't christian.
Not that I'm casting stones. I've watched too many movies that aren't good, clean, family movies. I've watched plenty on TV that I shouldn't. I'm just saying that until we quit watching crap...then that's all we're going to get. Until we quit trading Christian values, nothing will change.
As far as this and any other movie is concerned...ask yourself this.
Would you want to sit beside Jesus and watch it? Would it embarrass you? Would he want to see it?

I went to "Manna From Heaven" which is rated G and it had the S word in it so I give up. I thought it was really lame as well in teaching any lessons of morality. I thought "Bruce Almighty" was a really good movie in that it did have good lessons in trying to be God and how wrong that is. It showed popular people in Hollywood praying and believeing in God. That is great.

I would love to sit next to Jesus or any of the other prophets, such as Buddha, Krishna, Mohammed and Baha’u’llah, and watch this movie. It would not embarrass me one bit.
I would hope that they too would have a sense of humor and see the good that comes from this movie. This movie is just all in fun! It's not perfect just as no one person is perfect.

AGAIN....
The movie story line isn't where I have a problem. It's the language and the sexual content.
God has a sence of humor. He made me! To make someone a looney as I am, you have to have a sence of humor.
From a christian view the intention use of bad language is an intentional sin. We all sin because we are imperfect. We slip us. Intentional sin is because at that moment and time we simply don't care. We know it's wrong and do it anyway.

Honestly, never heard of it, but I don't keep up with movies at all. I think the last movie I saw in the theater was one of the Jurassic Park movies. The last 'G' rated movie besides cartoons (are those 'G' rated anymore?) that was in the theater was ... can't think of the name, but it had Julia Andrews whose granddaughter was living in USA with her mother as an regular teen. The grandmother sprange it on her that she was a princess.
It is a sad state when 'G' rated movies start having inapproite content.
But you have made my point. Movies and TV are out of control. Most of the movies I see are on TV with the worst of it edited out. Even then they don't always get it all.
janelle
06-24-2003, 05:56 AM
Not many people heard of "Manna From Heaven" because it wasn't shown in the regular theatres since it had a G rating. Regular theatres knew if it wasn't a kids show no one would go to it and they were right.
We have a theatre here that shows the the movies that aren't mainstream so we went to it there. Not many people there but some.

Off the subject again...
Have you ever heard of a company who when they can get the rights, takes movies (most of the time older ones) edit out the language and strong content then sells the video?
My son's girlfriend's sister told me about it and was suppose to send me the company's info to me through him. (Is this making sense) But my son and the girlfriend broke up before I got the info.
If anyone know, please let me know.

My husband and I will not be going to see that movie.
When we hear that little word... S or F word enough..pretty soon, it does not bother us any more because we have tuned it in and in a way accept it as a way of life because so many others have.
1 John 5:17 "All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death."
What comes to mind also is what about our children.
We are accountable for them.
If they see us accepting this kind of a movie what kind of a testimony are we to them and others? Children pick up on everything and when they see us laughing at things that are a sin....what kind of an example are we?
Sin.... no matter how small in form, is still sin.
What we take in..... is what we become.
We should not feel those movies with profanity, sexual overtones are something we should accept.
I believe that is one of the reasons why we are seeing sooooo many programs on TV with so much of it; because we as Christians have sat back and kept quite and accepted this.
Please know..that what I say comes right back to myself. I am not pointing fingers at any one individual but us a whole. We need to NOT support these movies/programs. We need to let them know why.
Money is the root of all evil...it is also one of the best ways to get across to the makers of such movies. NO show on our part...NO $$ on theirs.
If all Christians would take a stand...we would see far less of these types of movies.
I hold the remote during the commercials. I can be looking at a wonderful old movie and there comes the commercials that are filled with things that are demoralizing.
I recently read this from Senator Bill Bradley and I agree:
The answer [to television] is not censorship, but more citizenship in the corporate boardroom and more active families who will turn off the trash, boycott the sponsors, and tell the executives that you hold them personally responsible for making money from glorifying violence and human degradation.
Ever go to the store and listen to the music in the background?
Go from store to store and pretty soon you will recognize those songs,
then you will learn the melody and words.
Find yourself humming that tune? It does not take long.
I can remember years ago as a teen listening to the radio..and humming those tunes,
but inside I knew they were not pleasing to the Lord.
I prayed and asked the Lord to help me to tune my ears
to listen to what would be glorifying Him.
I only listen to gospel stations..I play my Christian Cd's all the time.
There's no room or desire in my heart, to sing the tunes of the world anymore.
I say that not to boast about myself but just give you
an example of how easy it is to get swept up in the things of this world.
What I do, hear & see...(what I allow to be taken in......)
....I have to be accountable for.
Life is short. Eternity long.
I don't often post and honestly don't like too, but just had a tug to do so today.
I hope you all have a Wonderful Day!
This is the Day the Lord has made!
I need to get some work done here.
God Bless You!

Manna From Heaven
Fanciful tale in which a Buffalo nun (Ursula Burton) decides that the found money her family and friends benefited from 30 years earlier must be repaid, so they organize a car raffle and ballroom dancing competition to raise the long-spent cash, and in the process reconnect with what is really important in life. Written by Gabrielle Burton and co-directed by her daughters, Gabrielle C. and Maria Burton, the movie's combination of humor and hope within a Catholic perspective results in a heartwarming film whose marvelous cast and crowd-pleasing elements make its plot contrivances seem amusingly whimsical. A few crude expressions and fleeting sexual innuendo. A-II -- adults and adolescents. (PG) 2003
Full Review
Thirty years after a family and friends found a small fortune on their front lawn, one of them decides the time has come to pay it back in the enjoyable, Catholic-oriented comedy "Manna From Heaven" (Five Sisters).
The story behind the movie is as interesting as what's on the big screen. The filmmakers are the Burton family. Mom Gabrielle wrote the script, Dad worked on the production and their five daughters all collaborated on this, their third feature. Daughter Ursula stars as Sister Theresa and co-produced with her sisters, Jennifer and Charity, while Gabrielle C. and Maria co-directed the movie. Shot on a tiny budget, the independent film is getting a gradual roll-out across the country.
Billed as a comedic fable, it opens as Buffalo's Annunciata family and a few friends are gathered in the living room. Suddenly they notice $20 bills floating onto the front lawn, seemingly out of the blue. After saintly 10-year-old Theresa (Hallee Hirsch) announces it's a gift from God, they divvy it up and go their separate ways.
Three decades later on Ash Wednesday, Theresa, now a nun, feels certain God meant the nearly $20,000 as a loan, not a gift. She summons everyone who moved away back to Buffalo and announces that by Easter they must raise the cash since none of them ended up well off.
Despite their reservations, the eight go along and decide to sell chances on a car raffle and sponsor a ballroom dancing competition. Elderly Helen (Cloris Leachman) has her heart set on winning the prize car while Sister Theresa's brother and his wife (Harry Groener and Faye Grant) just hope they can keep their dancing school afloat. Cynical Inez (Wendie Malick), who became a Las Vegas casino card dealer, temporarily moves in with sweet Dottie (Jill Eikenberry), who opened a beauty parlor but, like Inez, never married.
Unbeknownst to the others, Floridians Bunny and Eddy (Shirley Jones and Frank Gorshin) have become husband-and-wife con artists -- and envision making off with the proceeds in the raffle car.
Meanwhile, bighearted Sister Theresa's been getting in trouble with Mother Superior (Louise Fletcher) for taking strangers off the street into their convalescent home.
Soon the community comes together to restore a crumbling theater for the dance competition. After almost being canceled, the big night finally arrives just as Bunny and Eddy have a falling-out over their past misdeeds.
The script also sketches other characters who play small but crucial parts in the plot. Romance is also swirled into the busy narrative -- between the raffle car dealer (Seymour Cassel) and Dottie, the grown children of the two married couples, and an incognito admirer (Drew Pillsbury) who is drawn to Inez. Nor is the mystery of where the money actually came from, and where it will go, left up in the air.
There are contrived moments, but since the movie is genuinely funny and heartwarming they go down easily. The spirit of whimsy is alive and well throughout. It's a pleasure to see so many polished veteran actors working together, three of them Academy Award winners, all of them able to provoke a smile or a laugh without overacting.
The comedy has its serious side, too, as the characters discover their earlier windfall didn't bring them fulfillment. In this re-evaluation of lives, Sister Theresa's loving generosity sets an example for the positive directions those around her take.
An uplifting film about lost dreams and renewed hope, "Manna From Heaven" is nourishing, family-friendly entertainment that deserves to find the kind of mass audience that embraced "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
Because of a few crude expressions and fleeting sexual innuendo, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification is A-II -- adults and adolescents. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG -- parental guidance suggested.

I find it interesting that the strongest Christian voice in this whole thread has the name of a singer who is commonly known as an Athiest (altho, I don't know if she is or not, but I do know her lyrics, quoted below and they aren't very christian)... Now, I am not trying to be ugly, I *love* Tori Amos and her music, I just thought the connection was interesting. Please don't be offended or jump my throat...

Anyways, I am *not* bashing you, as I said I LOVE Tori, I really do just think it's interesting, as it makes you stand out as one who doesn't go w/ the crowd... it's a good thing!
I did enjoy reading this persons perspective on her: http://www.lightwarriors.com/LDODTA.htm
I do have a question for you guys tho... could someone point me to scripture where it says you are commiting a sin if you cuss or witness someone cussing? To my knowledge it's not a sin, while it's ok to dislike it, they are in the end, just words and as long as God knows your heart and you have a good relationship w/ Him, I don't see how it matters... Just my opinion, but I would love it if someone would point the scripture out for me.

Please don't be offended or jump my throat...
justme23....You're totally right....Im glad that you noticed my nick and brought that up. It just so happens that if you look at my registration date, I registered on here before I became saved. Sure, I used to listen to Tori Amos and used to like her music a lot. However, I prayed to God to take that desire away from me, and He did. The only music I listen to now is Christian music. I threw out all of her Cd's, tshirts, etc that I had when I became saved. Even if she is an atheist or whatever, are we not supposed to love EVERYONE with the love that we have been shown by our Father? In fact, I pray that she does give her heart to the Lord and become saved. Because we should pray this for everyone! We should not condemn or judge someone just because they are different than us. Pray for them and tell them about Jesus, that they may know the Truth!! When we get to heaven, God is going to ask us "Who did you bring with you? Who did you tell about Me?" And I don't know about you guys...but I want to have a long list of people under my name. Sure, I should probably change my nick etc. because it's not a godly thing to keep such a ungodly nick. For the sake of already having feedback from selling under my nick etc. I have kept this nick. Also, I rarely come on here at all anymore. I am too busy attending church throughout the week helping out and also praying/reading God's Word. When I do log on here(about once a month or sometimes longer than that), I log on for a couple of minutes and thats it. I have joined other discussion boards etc. recently and my nick on there is jen-livin4HIM....no matter how you look at it, it's not the outer person we should be looking at..it's what is in the heart and the fruit that a person bears. "Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned." Luke 6:21 God Bless you All!!

Well as I said, I totally love Tori and aswell your nick, so I was hardly judging anyone for the outside. I'm sorry you are offended (or seem to be), I stated it wasn't a rude thing I was saying or an attempt to bash you... only that I thought it was interesting and showed you stood out in a crowd (neither of which are bad).

All you have to do is look at the ten commandants to see Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain---cussing with His name.
My hubby just doesn't like bad language because it's crass and there are so many other words one can use. His father is the same way and he raised five boys not to cuss. It can be done. Cuss words use to be used to shock but it doesn't even have that effect on anyone anymore so the people doing it are lazy and don't want to educate themselves on our language. They may think they need to go along with the crowd to fit in so they cuss like the group they are in does.
