Not sure I understand what the problem is? I hate being classified as black or African American. I do not look like the color in the crayon box and I am not from Africa.

Are you saying you don't mind being called a Negro?

My husband's grandmother (who is black) uses the word negro and colored all the time. Of course she is 84, so those are the words she grew up with.

The person who used this word is in their 40's. From what I have read on the boards.

it is!!!

you just can't see me!

Just wonder why people feel the need to classify anyone, anywhere, anyhow??

Okay it's out of my system.

I plan on educating this person!!!

I dont let the word phase me. I grew up in the south and was raised by old folks (mom will be 80 and aunt is 87) so its a word that I'm used to. In all honesty, my friends and I use the word, ie "negro please" but as I said, its what I grew up with.

But that would just be silly!!!

If they were not meaning it nasty, could you have politely pointed that out and told them what the latest "p.c." term is?

OK.....just what IS the politically correct word then? Some dont like black, some dont like African American, most dont like Negro....is there a better way? I mean we are ALL just PEOPLE and I am not prejudiced in any way but tell me what right????>?

Isn't that a terrible word!! I've heard African American boys call each other by that name.
It really irritates me (and I'm as white as you can get)

How the heck did you get that she was prejudice from asking a simple question??? I know for a fact that Tami isn't predjudjice and thats just from intrecating with her on the boards.

I think she was just simply asking so as to not offend anyone.

Geez, some people are looking for any reason to get attention.

Doesn't sound like she's angry, merely frustrated with not knowing what the correct word of the moment is.

That is a VERY blanket assessment of somebody’s character. And who said they were angry?
Simply frustrated, that was my take on it. Pointing out that it is indeed well nigh impossible to please everybody all the time, especially when what is deemed PC is updated practically every other day.

Sometimes PC is highly overrated, especially when people use it as a weapon, or a guage in judging somebody’s character.

me too ... DH's mom was raised in Virginia (she's in her 90's) and uses it all the time because that's what she knows. I guess I'm showing my ignorance here, but I don't understand what's so offensive about it unless it is used in a derogatory way (i.e.; another "n" word) ... guess I could use some educating too ... pm me if you want.

Sometimes the "politically correct" words are equally as obnoxious to my way of thinking.

I personally don't believe in labelling anyone and never refer to anyone as "black", "white", or whatever ... we're all just people. Someone here has/had a signature about a box of crayons which I think is an excellent way to look at things.

So please don't flame me about this ... I guess I'm just missing something.

Okay I quess you all would have had too read the pm's I have gotten from this person. This was just my vent regarding one person's comment.

Where was DBack rude or disrespectful? I don't see it. She was asking a SIMPLE question, beings one day one word is right and the next someone is being prejudiced for using the word that was in the day before.

I think nosamiam's sig line says it all!!

My dad uses the word "colored" when he refers to someone who is black. I think it's more his generation than lack of respect (if you knew my dad you would know that he is one of the most liberal people out there and he is a real fighter for all people). My dad is 78 and it is more a part of his history than it is meant to be insulting.

As for myself, I prefer the word Black. No particular reason other than it is more natural for me to use. The word "Negro" has too many negative connotations associated with it and African American is just to long to say.

To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. ~*~*~Theodore Roosevelt, Kansas City Star, May 7, 1918

I don't understand the point you are attempting to make in saying "her sig line says it all."

America was founded on criticism, anarchy and revolt. Are we just mindless drones? NO.
I say this being a white female, in her 30's, and a Republican to boot. We have the right to voice our opinions. That's what makes this country a truly blessed place to live. Prior to reading this signature line, I never knew Teddy has made this statement. I am blessed that she/he enlightened me. Also, the person making this statement, Theodore Rossevelt, is one of our past presidents.

Peace out.:)

Okay, Was she putting it down? That's the way I read her remark. Whatever, I happen to agree with what ole Teddy is saying and I had not be exposed to this paragraph prior to reading your sig line. Thanks for enlightening me! Jacie

I am at a loss at what you are taking issue with in wing’s signature. You basically summed up, in your own words, what it says. I would think wings would agree. Where is your argument here?

And yeah, I think we are all aware of who Teddy Roosevelt was
