I had a friend in Jr High and the first parts of high school. We were kind of band nerds and hung around with a larger group of band nerds. This friend was about 5'5" at the most and we called him "Little John". I've been out of town for a while, doing normal life stuff like getting married, having a kiddo, staying home with the kiddo, etc. I get a phone call from my Mother who's a teacher in Tomball to find out that "Little John" had shot a police officer and of course was killed in self-defense. When Mom told me this I just thought, what the HECK? John was never like that around me or anyone else when we were growing up.
I'm very sad, but angry that John would turn out like this.

Man fatally shot by Precinct 4 Sergeant during Tomball arrest

A man wanted for questioning in a missing person’s case in Wichita Falls, Texas was fatally shot in Tomball on Sunday, May 4.
Harris County Pct. 4 Sgt. R. Brown returned fire on Johnny J. Roth, 23, after Roth allegedly fired rounds at two officers. Roth died early Sunday morning in the Tomball apartment where the incident occurred.
Sgt. Brown and Deputy T. Ashenbranner were called in by the Tomball Police Department to help serve a motion to revoke probation on another man in the apartment, D.J. McCoy. McCoy was wanted for questioning in relation to the December 2002 disappearance of a Wichita Falls woman, although the arrest warrant was issued for a misdemeanor DWI offense.
TPD Detective Jones had been working with Wichita Falls law enforcement in their efforts to gather information on the disappearance. When the location of the apartment fell under jurisdiction outside of Tomball, Pct. 4 was asked to aid in the arrest based on information received that the men were planning to flee to Mexico.
The officers, legally limited from forcing entry into a residence when warrants are served for misdemeanor offenses, verbally posed as pizza delivery men to coax the men into opening the door. McCoy answered and pulled Sgt. Brown into the apartment. As the two struggled, Roth opened fire on Brown while hiding behind the apartment’s front door. Sgt. Brown then returned fire, Harris County Pct. 4 Chief Jimmy Sumner said.
“Two rounds came from Brown’s weapon,” Sumner said. “One struck Deputy Ashenbranner, resulting in a minor injury.”
McCoy was taken into custody and is being held by Harris County Sheriff’s homicide investigators. He will be turned over to Wichita Falls authorities. The case remains under investigation by Harris County Sheriff’s homicide division and the Harris County District Attorney’s office, pending review by a Harris County Grand Jury.
“We certainly believe it’s a justified shooting,” Sumner said.
