you can usually find the state comptoller's site, for whichever state you are in, and search and access free.

Absolutely. You can get this information for free if you are willing to look. Most state's have a site (usually through the comptroller). This site is charging a fee and they do search for you.
Frankly, I wouldn't use it.

Never used a net site, but once an "heir finder" company called me at work and told me I had some money sitting in Ohio from my birth father passing on 5 years earlier (I didn't know he had passed on). I asked how much and they told me $17,000! I was like "Woo Hoo"
!! I was 24 at the time. I then asked where it was and how do I come and get it? They then informed me that there was a 40% fee for finding me! They wouldn't tell me until I signed a contract, stating they could have 40% of any money they found waiting for me. They wanted almost half my money!!! I was like "hell no!!" So, I called my dad, he got me an atty in Toledo and he found my fathers will (public documents) It was still open since I hadn't been located. (adopted...different last name). Got that money plus a bunch more and 2 autos for an atty fee of about $2000. Much better than 40%!!!!!!!! Then they had the gall to call me back a few months later, after I had gotten all the money and gave me a sob story on how hard they looked for me, if it wasn't for them, I would have know nothing about the $$ (probably true there) and they were doing me a favor... Could I please send them some money...whatever I thought reasonable for their work. Geesh!! ( I didn't!!)

Don't pay them to do something you can do yourself!
I found this site for Ohio http://www4.state.oh.us/com/unfd/qry1.asp
if you are looking in another state look for the site for the Treasury dept. for that state it should have all the information you need.
I've done this a few times, my son recently got $200. that he didn't know about, they actually contacted him.
Good luck!
