My boyfriend's had AOL since before I met him. Sorry if I'm offending AOL users, but UGH, I just hate it. I've been on Earthlink for over a few yrs. It's good, not great, and trust me, I could start an entirely different thread on just trying to get a human voice on the phone, let alone one who actually knows what they are doing.

Well, to make this story short (but probably longer :) ), we have a separate vacation house that still has the AOL. I have Earthlink at our other place. Found out that we can use Earthlink here for free.

Logged on to AOL, but for the life of me can't figure out how to find the directions on dumping them.

Suggestions ANYONE??? I'm desperate!!!

They will do everything under the sun to keep you from canceling the account. they will offer you free time, and all kind of other accounts. and then BE CAREFUL they will still charge you. make sure if its on a credit card (if possible) cancel the card, or debit card and get a new one. or if its from your checking account, go sign a form that will not allow them to deduct charges from aol anymore. They will keep billing you in anyway they can so watch them. I finally just told them that my computer died, and i didn't know anyone with AOL, so i couldn't even log on a a guest and didn't need their guest account either. BE STRONG, lmao.

UNLESS you have a bad screen name. That is what hubby did. They found it, and kicked us off. I have been happier w/ MSN.

Good Luck Canceling them! My most recent go around with aol, I cancelled after their software kept crashing my computer. I spoke to SIX different customer service people, none of whom would cancel the account. They all passed me on to someone else, but nobody would cancel it. Finally, I got a sympathetic woman one evening and she cancelled it for me. It isn't worth those 1045 free hours folks!! LOL

Good luck in doing that. LOL I know someone that used AOL as their ISP and had nothing but problems trying to cancel service with them. As the others have said, be careful because they will keep charging you even after you've cancelled with them.

Over a year ago, my husband & I got DSL (through Bell South). When we got the DSL, we already had AOL. So, I called AOL to cancel. Naturally, they try their damnest to keep you from canceling. They said they would give me 2 months of AOL for free. So, I decided to keep it. Before that 2 months of free AOL was up, I called to cancel & they gave me another 2 months free. This went on for an entire year!

Two months ago, I bought a new computer that came with 6 months of (free) AOL! So...I called to cancel my current AOL service because I had the 6 months free! When this 6 months is just about up, I'll call to cancel again. If AOL is that stupid to keep giving me free internet access like that, I'll keep calling back to cancel.

I won't pay 2 cents for AOL or any other ISP as long as I have DSL.

If AOL charges against your credit card without your authorization, contact your credit card company to dispute the charge. Then contact AOL about it. Whenever you call AOL (or any company) to cancel/question a service, document the date & time of the call, as well as the name of the person you spoke with & a notation of the purpose of the call. This way if you have to file a complaint or a dispute, you have some pertinent information that is favorable to your benefit.

the1bea - How do you get a bad screen name?? I'm guessing something obscene??? Does that really work and get you kicked off??

By the way, everytime I've had a b**** with Earthlink and have talked to their (so-called) customer support, I've gotten so fed up that I've threatened to cancel my account, and they have done absolutely nothing to try to keep me as a customer.

I had aol then when I got a new computer with MSN, they cancelled aol for me. no problems. Still get those stupid aol CDs in the mail. I give them to my bil and he uses them as coaster for when he has parties.
