How many times have you bought ant killer that seems more like food than killer for the ants? I know I have. I found this recipe last fall and just tried it out it does work. No more ants.

Only be careful where you put it so the pets and kids don't get into it.
Recipe
1 teaspoon boric acid (can get at WalMart)
6 tablespoons sugar
2 cups hot water (must be hot really hot)
mix all ingredients and soak cotton balls in it.
Place in cottage cheese container with lid.
Poke holes in container about 1/8 from bottom. Put soaked cotton balls in it.
Don't worry the first day you will think you have more ants than even but by the third day they should all be gone.

Repeat put where children and pets cannot get into this.

Something that works, not just on ants, but roaches and all other kinds of insects also, is plain old 20 Mule Team Borax. Borax is a deadly poison to insects. And you don't have the bother of making a recipe. However, it is a little messy, I put a little trail at the junction at the very back of my cabinets, up against the storm windows, and on the outside step up against the door sill (where protected from washing away by porch overhang.

Not only does this kill them, they carry it back to their nests on their feet and it kills the entire extended family, right then and in the future, because it remains toxic.

You probably would want to be careful around kids and pets.

Good luck!

What about ear wigs? Any suggestions?

Doofis I use it just like ant cups, you can use any container to put it.

sadie01 I don't know if it would work on fire ants or not we don't have any around here. But worth a try. I got a really big bottle of boric acid for only $1.78 and it will last forever with what little you use.

Know nothen about ear wigs. Sorry

With the 20 Mule Team Borax, last year I did this at my mom's suggestion, and for the first time had NO crawling insects of any kind upstairs. No large black ants, no little red ants, no ear wigs, no spiders. This year I am putting it in the basement also to tackle the spiders down there. Outside it would wash away unless protected, so wouldn't work. Of course flying insects aren't affected, only those that walk through the poison. I don't have pets or children, so not a consideration here.

Actually the 20 Mule Team Borax DOES work outside. I use 2 or 3 boxes and sprinkle around the yard and around the perimeter of the house right before it is supposed to rain. It is awesome for fleas in your yard as well as ants.

You mean the 20 Mule Team Borax? You can buy it anywhere you buy laundry stuff. It is in the section wit the laundry soap (cuz that's what it is LOL). It was around $2.50 a box last time I bought it.

Thanks! We get ants every year and I haven't found anything that really gets rid of them yet. So, I'll have to give this a try!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! You do not know how this will come in handy! Oh, I wish I could hug you!!! I HATE ants and have them every year. I live on a lake and the ant problem is so bad with everyone here that the exterminators call us to see if we are ready to have them spray yet.

Talcum powder put on your window sills etc. will keep them out of the house. They don't like crossing over it. Plus it isn't poisen to your pets or children.

Poke holes in container about 1/8 from bottom.

Can you please explain this? Am I supposed to just poke holes in the bottom? I dont understand the "from bottom" part.

I am defintly gonna give this a try, I have ant problems around my sink, and i've used just plain boric acid and it doesnt work. I've used a cheap orange cleaner...that works miracles, kills them instantly lol See cheap stuff does work...lol

Thank you!!

Just a couple cloves in a cabinet will keep ants out, too. I had them come in & once I put cloves in the cabinet where they were, I never saw another one. That's been almost 10 years ago. Cloves are safe for kids & animals, too.

From the bottom means about 1/8 up on the side from where the container sets down at. You can use a ice pick if you want little neat holes or if you are like me a knife stuck in and twisted makes nice holes.

I agree that the acid DOES WORK! But you have to buy the one at walmart thats the kind we always get but we went about a week ago and they didnt have it so we bought the cheap kind from the dollar store and it does not work nothing like the one from walmart...We use this every year and what we do instead of mixing it and so forth is to go outside and spread it all the way around your house and it isnt that time consuming considering it house a little spount thing on the end and all you have to do is squeeze the bottle...JUST MAKE SURE YOUR KIDS OR PETS DONT GET AROUND IT FOR A COUPLE DAYS but trust me You will not find anything that works better.....I havent had ants in about 5 years until now and I am going back to walmart tomorrow to see if they got it in yet.......
