He's my sweetie and all, but lately I can't even go pee without the old man following me. He is certainly showing his age, he's a big guy and almost 12 and he must be by my side. I tell you, nobody is getting close to me with him on guard. I keep telling him that mama is ok, but he seems so worried, how can I get him to lay off and realize that I am ok?

Did I mention he snores really loud? Not to even mention the puppy dreams he has, he chases rabbits in his sleep, woof woof woof and those legs get moving really fast and keep hitting the floor, he wakes me up and I can't help it, it's so funny I sit and watch him run in his sleep. Glad someone is sleeping...

No advice for you, but I think it's really sweet that he loves you & is that protective of you. :)

It is really sweet, he's a great guy. I just don't like him worrying about me. He just seems so concerned that something will happen to me. Uhoh, just ocurred to me, does he know something I don't?

I hope not! Maybe he's like some people, they worry more as they get older.

I don't want to scare or worry you, but it might not be you. My sister had a cat that did the same thing and wanted to be on her lap all the time, when he wasn't a lap cat. He died a few weeks later. I hope this isn't your case. Maybe, he just misses you and wants some time with you. Have you been busy lately?

Yes, I think that is it. He is just worrying more with age, he doesn't stay outside much anymore or go running or anything, he sleeps a lot, he has much more time on his paws. He just cracked me up, he saw a kitty outside and let out this long bass howl. He is so loud! He really wants a kitty, I promised him one sometime soon when I can afford the shots and spaying.

Tadbit, I already know. He is acting just like my 19 year old kitty did last summer before she passed on. I am just trying to pretend that he is still a young guy and we have years ahead. I know it is a matter of months, or maybe weeks. I know that is why he is hanging so close to me, but I don't want to accept it. He has been a very faithful friend and protector to me and my kids. I watched him take on two rottweilers that came into our yard and he escorted them back down the street where they belonged. He has helped raise and watch my kids. He is 100# of red fur and heart. I hope it doesn't come down to putting him to sleep. I had to do that with my cat because of pain, and I don't want to do it again. Geez, wrote a novel here, but thanks for the shot of reality, Tad, I think I needed that. Reminds me of a song - Doctor my eyes, remember that anyone?

I'm so sorry for you. I'll say a prayer for your dog. I'm glad you are getting to spend some time with him though. I wish him well.
