Move reflects anger over France's stance on Iraq

Reps. Walter Jones, left, and Bob Ney announce the name changes on House menus at a Tuesday news conference.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The cafeteria menus in the three House office buildings changed the name of "french fries" to "freedom fries," in a culinary rebuke of France stemming from anger over the country's refusal to support the U.S. position on Iraq.

Ditto for "french toast," which will be known as "freedom toast."

The name changes were spearheaded by two Republican lawmakers who held a news conference Tuesday to make the name changes official on the menus. Across the country, some private restaurants have done the same.

"This action today is a small, but symbolic effort to show the strong displeasure of many on Capitol Hill with the actions of our so-called ally, France," said Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, the chairman of the Committee on House Administration.

Ney, whose committee has authority over the House cafeterias, directed the change, after colleague Walter Jones, R-North Carolina, circulated a letter suggesting such a move. Jones said he was following the example of a local restaurant owner in his North Carolina district.

"I represent a district with multiple military bases that have deployed thousands of troops," Jones said in a statement. "As I've watched these men and women wave good-bye to their loved ones, I am reminded of the deep love they have for the freedom of this nation and their desire to fight for the freedom of those who are oppressed overseas. Watching France's self -serving politics of passive aggression in this effort has discouraged me more than I can say."

The name change was criticized by one young man in a House cafeteria.
"That's completely ludicrous to me," he said.

France has pressed the United Nations to give weapons inspectors more time in Iraq, saying the U.S. and British-led move to war is premature. Its stance has angered some U.S. lawmakers. Rep. Jim Saxton, R-New Jersey, has introduced legislation in the House that would block any French company from receiving U.S. government aid or financing in any reconstruction of Iraq. Another measure discourages American tourists, businesses and the government from participating in the 2003 Paris Air show.

But House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, said he didn't think Congress needed to take any formal steps to signal its disapproval of France. "I don't think we have to retaliate against France," he said. "They have isolated themselves. They have resigned from any responsibility for the war on terror."

Asked why he was focusing on France when other nations, including Germany and Russia, oppose the U.S. position on Iraq, Jones said it was because France had taken the lead in challenging the United States.

Officials with the French Embassy in Washington could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.

Most of this is silly posturing and a waste of tax-payers money.

The most intelligent thing I have heard is :
Rep. Jim Saxton, R-New Jersey, has introduced legislation in the House that would block any French company from receiving U.S. government aid or financing in any reconstruction of Iraq.

That's right - get *them* where it hurts.

They were talking about this last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live (gotta get a plug in--I love his show!), and he read a statement from the French government, something to the effect of "There are a lot of important things going on that we need to focus our attentions on--why should we care what you call your potatoes?" They then went on to tell about how french fries are actually Belgian. I was cracking up. Why SHOULD they care what we call our potatoes? Why should ANYONE care? I think this is so lame...

My understanding of this was because France wouldn't support us with an invasion of Irag before March 17th.

I will still say French fries and French toast. Can you imagine not eating 'crepe Suzettes" as they become 'crepe Susie Jo's"......

Our tax dollars hard at work.

And I suppose it would be UNpatriotic to FRENCH kiss my husband? I'll have to call it freedom kissing? And no longer french toast but fried egg bread? Hmmm, and what about our buddy Germany? This could have widespread effects. No teaching German or French as a foreign language. Ban the import and sales of all French and German made cars. No beret-wearing or cooking of sauerkraut...absolutely NO German potato salad at family reunions, no French wine...

...the repercussions are endless. :D

OHMIGOD! I'm 1/4 German, 1/4 Swiss and HALF FRENCH. Deport me.

LOL! That's the next bill they're going to waste their time on.

This is why much of the rest of the world thinks Americans are idiots. First we name foods "French" that didn't originate in France and have nothing to do with actual French food. Then our government wastes time on dumb stuff like this!

This is silly, Taken to the exreme would be boycotting everything french or french owned. Currently French Companies own or operate
1,850 companies and 370,000 employees in the USA. Think of the economic impact if they were to be boycotted or pull their operations out of the US.
Our politicians have much more important things to do than this.

Whut-EVER!!!

Gee, if I'd known the only qualification to get elected to Congress was to act like a spoiled brat in the kindergarten sandbox, I would have started doing it a long time ago! Thinking about the amounts of taxpayer dollars being paid to support these idiots makes me nauseous!

No "Freedom Fries" Or "Freedom Toast" In The French Quarter

(New Orleans-AP) -- Don't expect to find "freedom fries" in New Orleans. And forget about horse-and-buggy rides through the narrow, balcony-lined streets of the "Freedom Quarter."

Louisiana has long played up its French heritage, especially in this 200th year since the Louisiana Purchase. State leaders and tourist-dependent businesses can only hope that tension between France and the United States over Iraq won't spoil the party.

Even if Louisiana wanted to de-emphasize its French heritage and conform to what many believe is a misguided show of patriotism, it would be impractical. Bilingual signs can be found throughout the southern part of the state, especially in Cajun areas surrounding Lafayette.

In New Orleans, in addition to the French Quarter, there's an Avenue Charles de Gaulle, a French Market, even a Place de France where the French flag still flies. The symbol of New Orleans is the old French royal fleur-de-lis, which is also on the helmets of the Saints football team.

I was so mad today. i went to visit my Grams in The hospital, and while she was in for testing, Me and my mom went to the cafteria.....They serve "freedom Fries", and when she asked Freedom Fries of chips...I said....Keep your freedom fries mam, I will go to burger King and eat The FRENCH Fries!

so we left, and a lot of people started looking at me like I was anti-freedom, so I smiled and left. I dont want this war, and I sure dont want to eat freking Freedom fries. I am not anti-freedom, or anything...But enough is enough! This is just pathetic.
