Lawyer says boy admits lying about doghouse punishment
Associated Press
ORANGE - The attorney for a man who allegedly made his stepson sleep in a doghouse -- and later agreed to accept the same punishment -- says the boy now claims he lied about the discipline.
Attorney Keith Ellis said Wednesday he has a notarized letter from the 11-year-old saying his stepfather, Curtis Robin Sr., never imposed the doghouse punishment, television station KFDM reported.
The stepson, who is in Florida with family, said in the letter, "I lied about having to sleep in the doghouse and not be fed. I would have said and done anything to go back to Florida to live with my father and my grandparents."
Ellis said Robin does acknowledge he spanked his stepson with a car antenna, and that it was a mistake.
Robin was indicted by a grand jury in August 2001 on charges of injury to child. He faced up to 10 years in prison if convicted before agreeing to a plea bargain that gave him a choice -- 30 days in jail or 30 days in a doghouse -- if he pleaded guilty.
According to the plea agreement signed Feb. 17, Robin picked the doghouse.
The deal must be approved by a judge. Robin will be sentenced March 13.
