View Full Version : Am I the only person WITHOUT a cell phone?

Xica

just checking. :p

Seriously, sometimes I think we (hubby and I) are the only people without one. I don't care to have one and neither does hubby. Good thing, because it's a problem when one person spends money on something the other thinks is a waste.

So does anyone else NOT own a cell phone because they simply don't want to? Financial reasons are different altogether. I know a lot of people would have a phone if they could afford it.

Actually I own mine because of financial reasons, it's alot cheaper than a land line, pay $39.95 for 3500 anytime minutes, no roaming, free longdistance, nationwide service, unlimited text. And then the added convenience, of knowing that if anyone needs me, they can get me anytime, anywhere. Comes in handy on my frequent road trips also.

I have one so my kids can reach me. I'm not at home much and if they get sick at school etc. I don't want to feel I have to stay all day at home. Also we have old cars and it's a long walk, if you break down on the freeway,to get a phone. We don't use it much I but have turned off the long distance service on the home phone and just use the cell when we want to call long distance and it's cheaper for us.

I have one, but its a prepaid and I NEVER turn it on. The only time its on is when I have a sickly child or I need to call home to make sure they got in the house ok.

I use about 10 or 15 minutes a month.

thats the same reason we have ours. i make alot of long distance and i was tired off 200 plus phone bills so now we pay 30.00 for home service and i pay 49.99 for my cell phone-much much cheaper

I had a cell phone for many years. During the summer (and on weekends when Sarah was home from college) she gained temporary custody. Since she graduated college and moved back home in May, I've not seen the phone! So, after 9 months, I went tonight and got ANOTHER phone. For me. I didn't really miss having one, but I am on the road a lot alone and at night, and Chuckles finally insisted.

My son and his g/f just bought a new home a couple months ago. They have NO land line now. Just their two cell phones. (which suck by the way, they have Sprint service) Sarah called earlier this week griping about the phone bill for her line in her apartment. $38 a month WITH no long distance, ONLY call-waiting. $20 more than she paid for the same thing in college. She's having them take out the apt. line and going strictly cell.

Lasher, what provider do you have that offers 3500 anytime minutes, no roaming, free LD? Sarah would be VERY interested! She's paying (well I'm PAYING) $35 a month for I think 300 peak, unlimited nights and weekends.

Mine has 300 anytime, unlimited nights and weekends, free LD and no roaming for $45/month through Verizon.

I stayed with Cingular, have had them forever (and before they were even Cingular!) and the plan I just took out is 350 anytime, 5000 nights and weekends, free long distance, no roaming and rollover anytime minutes for $39.99. I was driving myself nuts looking at different providers and plans. All I knew is that I did NOT want Sprint.

We have to go to Cingular this weekend cause our phone is wigging out. They have a program now 3500 minutes, free LD, No Roaming, Nationwide, etc. For $29.99. I think we're going to switch to that. PLUS get a new phone.

I don't have one, and don't want one. I don't want people to be able to get ahold of me anywhere. If hubby and I were going on a long car trip, then I'd get a prepaid one for emergencies, but that's it.

Know what I hate more than anything? When you're in a public place and a cell phone rings and 37 people reach for theirs! I leave mine off all the time when I'm in public or driving, unless I'm expecting a return call, then it just goes to voice mail or vibrates. But by the time I feel it vibrating and get it out of my pants - I MEAN PURSE - they've hung up anyway.

The guy at Cingular told me tonight that in 3 years or so there will be phones capable of projecting your picture to the person you're talking to and visa versa. Then we got to talking about how you can get internet and email and radio stations now and how long would it be before you could pick up your favorite television show through your cell phone! WORST CASE SCENERIO:

rush hour
chicky running late for a date
driving 80mph down the interstate
finishing up her makeup and hair
AND watching her favorite sitcom!

02-21-2003, 08:34 PM
I have mine only for emergencies - in case I break down (my car, actually, not me! LOL) or if my daughter gets sick at daycare & I am out of the office. For peace of mind basicaly, It is on 24-7.
I'm not sure what I have for minutes, cuz I very very rarely use it! I know that nights & weekends are free.
I got mine because I get a company discount through my work - so the phone was free & the plan only cost me $10.99 per month so to me it is worth it!

JB you have now discovered my Pet Peeve. I hate cell phones with such a passion that I have done something I have never done before — I have actually confronted people on their vile little Annoyances, something very unlike me (a private, aloof soul, wanting only to tread this Earth in peace and quiet unless I'm listening to the Ramones but that does not count.) I have gotten into verbal exchanges with people over this, literally turning around and saying in a loud voice "Madame, do you think all of us in line give a good Edited. This type of language is not allowed on this forum. Katt about your operation? Hang up. Shut up."

Here in the Bay Area we have a wonderful public transportation system called B.A.R.T. (Bay Area Rapid Transit). You're squished into the cars; it's right out of a Gregory Peck movie; and you're sucking in the person's hair directly in front of you. But there will be some nincompoop who will dare to take out his or her cell phone and initiate a call! Do people know no shame whatsoever? Must we all be participating in Reality TV? Must we all be on display?

I'd better shut my pie hole, as you would say JB, because I have complete loathing for this technology and its appearance in even a solemn house of worship is just enough to make me want to outlaw it inside any public building or form of transportation.

"Liver" just bought me one recently. Since I have to drive 2.5 hours for a DR appt. he thought it might be good to have one. It is a Nokia and it is one where you get the prepaid card with the minutes and then go from there. It is out in the glovebox of the car and that is where it stays.

I would love to have one just so I can get the long distance benefits and have it in the vehicle for safety purposes but here in the mountains we can't use one it just won't pickup a signal so until they install more antennas I guess I'm not going to get a cell phone. I would like to have a prepaid one for keeping in the vehicle but they are so expensive especially since I would only want it for emergencies and never use it otherwise.

Me and My Hubby have one but we haven't gotten service for it yet. so it's still in a box but we want to because of the winters out here what if you break down in the middle of the night (we work late hours sometimes) and it's 40 below zero outside you need to have some way to get ahold of someone so you don't freeze to death.
We started thinking about it 2 years ago when a lady went off the road about 30 miles from where we lived she died before any one found her the next day. So were getting service for ours this month.

I have one for emergencies. The phone was free, my hubby use to work at radioshack and he earned it from guess what! Selling so many cell phones! lol I just buy the minutes and they add up, I dont lose them. That keeps it active. It has been very handy! Like when I was in a car accident etc. He has a phone w/ free long distance at night so its cheaper for us to use that instead of our residential plan.

My husband has two, one for personal use and one for work.

My one complaint about people with cell phones is how inconsiderate they are. Like, when you're in a restaurant and cell phones are ringing and people are conversing on them loudly. My husband turns it off when we go in anywhere; and if someone called and left a message, he goes outside and away from people to call them back.

There now: If wackydackydoo + hubby can be considerate why can't everyone? Why can't people turn their frigging cell phones off when they are in a public place? It is beyond rude, it is offensive.

But the living end — the one that gets me going because there is not one excuse that these journalists could possibly have — is when some turkey's cell phone or pager goes off during a press conference. And the last straw came for me when, during NASA's first press conference on the Columbia tragedy, some idiot couldn't even have the basic courtesy to turn off his bleeping cell phone while O'Keefe was discussing the loss of 7 dear souls! Are some of these journalists just stupid? Good God I could have lept into that TV screen and strangled that guy with my bare hands. If I were O'Keefe I would have demanded he be removed from the room.

Talking about rude people. My son was in a district Math Counts competion a couple of weeks ago. Not only did a woman's cell phone ring, but she answered it (twice) and proceeded to yack very loudly while the competion was going on. Not only that, but she ended up being one of the teachers who was in charge of being one of the teams. I really wanted to strangle her. I couldn't believe the supervisors didn't escort her from the room. (By the way, my son got third place individually and gets to go to State competition.)

I know I hate it. I have a friend who has a cell phone and no matter where we go it rings constantly. I think its very rude especially when you are in public, like a resturant or a movie. you can turn it off for an hour or two it wont kill ya.. really it wont. Also one of those that talks and drives. And beleive me he can barely drive to start with, he doesnt need a phone distracting him too. I will be so glad when they outlaw using a cell phone when you are driving. Seems no one can do anything these days without one in their ear.

It's illegal in New York State to drive and talk on the cell phone. In the movie theater, they put a warning up on the screen that whoever's cell phone starts ringing during the movie, the usher will come and escort them out and may not return to the movie.
