Toddler survives 6 days with dead body

NASHVILLE - Police say a 3-year-old girl survived on cookies and soft drinks for up to six days in an apartment with the body of her grandmother.

Authorities say 48-year-old Doris Fay Porter died of natural causes Friday or Saturday. Her boyfriend found her Thursday after trying to reach her by phone. He says she wasn't feeling well Friday. There are no signs of foul play.

A spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Children's Services says the toddler is "in good health and well cared for." Officers say she was talkative and didn't appear to be hungry or scared. During the ordeal, she apparently ate snacks she could reach in the kitchen.

Police also found toys scattered around the apartment and believe the girl spent much of the past several days playing with them. A police spokesman says the child believed her grandmother was sleeping.

Porter had been in charge of the girl's care. The toddler's mother is on her way to Nashville from out-of-state.

Local news just said she tucked her grandmother in and slept beside her a couple of times before moving to another room.

Poor dear. And for a 3 year old to be able to care for herself for that length of time is amazing.

I agree. My son is 3 1/2 and I wonder kind of what he would do if he was in that situation.

This is so terribly sad. I'm looking at my 3 year old right now and wandering what it would be like for her in that situation. It's enough to make a person cry. I am so glad that she was able to find something to eat and was doing okay and really doesn't seem to know what was going on with her grandma. Maybe she won't have any bad memories of it.

I saw the girl on the news last night. She looked fine. They said she just thought her grandmother was sleeping. She even tucked the grandmother in. The upstairs neighbors said they never heard ANYTHING! Not even the tv being on at odd hours. This is a remarkable little girl.
