Iraqis Call Shuttle Disaster God's Vengeance
Sat Feb 1, 3:24 PM ET

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Immediate popular reaction in Baghdad on Saturday to the loss of the U.S. space shuttle Columbia and its seven-member crew -- including the first Israeli in space -- was that it was God's retribution.

"We are happy that it broke up," government employee Abdul Jabbar al-Quraishi said.

"God wants to show that his might is greater than the Americans. They have encroached on our country. God is avenging us," he said.

Iraqis are braced for a possible U.S.-led war to rid their country of any chemical, biological or nuclear weapons it may possess. Iraq denies it has such weapons.

Car mechanic Mohammed Jaber al-Tamini noted Israeli air force Colonel Ilan Ramon was among the dead when the shuttle broke up over the southwestern United States 16 minutes before its scheduled landing.

The 48-year-old Israeli astronaut was a fighter pilot in the Israeli air force. He was the youngest pilot in a team that bombed Iraq's nuclear reactor in 1981. Israel said the reactor was intended to develop nuclear weapons.

"Israel launched an aggression on us when it raided our nuclear reactor without any reason, now time has come and God has retaliated to their aggression," Tamini said.

There were no such signs of jubilation over the shuttle disaster in any of the Palestinian territories. The official response from the Palestinians was one of condolence.

"President (Yasser) Arafat and the Palestinian Authority (news - web sites) offer their condolences to the six American families and the Israeli family who lost their loved ones in the catastrophe," Saeb Erekat, a senior Palestinian official and spokesman, told Reuters.

Erekat said Arafat had sent President Bush (news - web sites) a message of condolences over the loss of the NASA (news - web sites) space agency's shuttle. The United States, Israel's closest ally, is the chief Middle East peace broker.

Yep, I'm sorry, but anyone who's on the fence about whether we "should" go to war needs to read this. As far as I'm concerned, they deserve what they're going to get.

Congratulations! based on the comments of TWO Iraqi's you want them all to die! WOW, and people say Americans aren't compassionate.
DID ANY OF YOU STOP TO THINK THAT MAYBE THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ SAY THINGS LIKE THIS BECAUSE OF THE ANTI-AMERICAN PROPAGANDA THEY ARE FED EVERY DAY?
No, like the stereotypical American you jumped up and said "destroy anybody that talks bad about us"

You've managed to depersonalize an entire nation down to an unknowable "THEM". You have decided that the United States should go to war because of THIS? That is unconsionable.

*****Legion6000--I agree with everything you've stated.I love your signature by the way! (I am currently taking a history course on the Russiam Revolutions and we are currently discussing Marx and Stalin among others in the socialist movement).*****
I happen to know a man that was a Kurd born in Iraq. Most of the Iraqi people actaully despise Saddam but out of fear they say otherwise. How else do you explain him winning the latest election by 99.5% (99.something)? He was also unopposed. The Kurds in Iraq are actually going to be working with the US, on a possible military coup of Saddam, courtesy of the CIA. It is wrong to base the statements made by Saddam as those of the entire nation. I do not believe a military intervention is the way to go. Bush is eager to finish what Daddy could not. War is not the solution. I know I will be slammed as unpatriotic because I questioned this. But I must agree with Tom Morello (Audioslave and formerly of Rage Against the Machine) when he said "It was unpatriotic not to question what your government does".

"We are happy that it broke up," government employee Abdul Jabbar al-Quraishi said. I will keep my views on war to myself, but the disaster of yesterday(or what was said
"God wants to show that his might is greater than the Americans. They have encroached on our country. God is avenging us," he said) does not affect my decision.

The Columbia disaster and the war are mutually exclusive.

But that doesn't mean I can't still wish for Saddam Hussein a paralyzing, slow, painful death — and eternal Hell as his destination.

Legion600 , exactly what I was thinking . Now I know someone is going to bash me for saying this but ,,,, know if the terroists that hit us on 9/11 were to go up in a shuttle and have it explode , you know that ALOT of americans would say the same thing that is was Gods will , that he was avenging us . I don't agree with what they said but you know alot of us americans would say the same . I wouldn't but that's just me . I don't wish harm on anyone . Too damn nice lol . :)
