How old were your children when you knew if they were right or left handed? Megan and Ryan are almost 2 and I still don't know. They switch back and forth all the time. DH and I are both right handed. My sister is left handed and my Mom is ambidextrous (can use both hands).

I'm a lefty. My kids are both right handed. We knew by the time they were 2 1/2 or 3, neither of them showed and left-handed inclinations whatsoever.

I'm ambidextrous, my son is right-handed. My DD is 20 months, still not sure about her yet.

I don't have any kids, but I am a lefty the only one in the whole family. My mom said everyone always used to ask her if she tried to change me to right handed....like I was wrong for it. However I am pretty handy with my right-hand (including writing when I have to), I think alot of leftys, are you just kinda have to be.

My son he'll be 3 next month, He writes right handed but throws, bats and everything else left handed. He loves golf, he even golfs left handed. And he is awesome at all sports, everyone is always amazed at him when he's playing a sport. Oh sorry rambling..
I am a righty 100%, but hubby is ambidextious.

When I was in 1st grade, (long, long ago) when my teacher saw me writing with my left hand, she'd take the pencil out of it & put it in my right hand, and make me sit on my left! I hated that lady! Then she would give me bad marks for penmanship, 'cuz I would just hurry up & finish whatever it was, so i could stop sitting on my hand. And I always eat with my left hand, & she told my grandparents to not let me do that! She's also the one that told me witches were left handed, LMAO!

Hippie, sounds like she is the witch to me! Thankfully nobody ever tried to make me right handed.

Same story here HippieChic...except the sitting on my left hand, and the witch thing..good grief. I was a lefty in Kindergarten and my teacher made me switch, she didn't know how to teach me to write using my left hand (at least that is what my baby book says).
So these days I use my right hand to write with...can use my left if I have to, it is just more legible with the right hand. For everything else (eating, brushing my teeth, etc.), I use my left hand exclusively.

I'm right-handed as is my daughter. But our son is a definitely lefty...and we knew about at about 8 months. I would put a spoon in his right hand (just instinctively) and he would always just switch the spoon to his left hand. I had a "duh" moment and started handing him things to his left hand.
We think that hubby might naturally be left-handed, but he writes with his right hand. There are several people in his family who are lefties. He doesn't remember anyone forcing him to write right-handed...but he does many other things left-handed.

My bro and sis are lefty and I'm righty. 2 of my 3 grandkids are lefty but their parents are righty. They were about 18 months when we noticed. granddaughter may be amidexterous as she draws with both hands at the same time. When she draws faces she draws the eyes and ears usin both hands at the same time

i write mainly with my right hand, but so many things my mom taught me to do craftwise (using wire cutters, making bows, etc) so I learned them lefty. I can also write fairly well with the left.
ravenlost, my mom went thru a lot of that catholic getting smacked on the left hand with a ruler herself. The Devil's hand, indeed.
She said growing up you knew who was left handed because of how their hand dragged through the ink, and the heel of their left hands were always inked and their papers smudged.

My SIL had the opposite problem. Her Mom was very controling and decided she wanted a lefty so told teachers she was a lefty and make sure she was taught to write lefty. That's the only thing she does lefty

Im a lefty, and my husband is right handed
my 7 yr old is ambidextrous(sp?) but now usually only writes with his left hand because the SCHOOL told him he wasnt allowed to use both hands. WTF?? If he can use 'em both whats the big deal?? you could read his writing with both hands.
My 3 yr old is a righty.. and my 1 yr old is going to be right handed also I believe. he favors EVERYTHING with his right.
My sister is left handed like I am and we got that from my maternal grandmother. My son got the ambidextrous thing from my uncle on my dads side. He was also an artist which my brother and sis inherited .. im lucky if i can draw a stick figure..lol

I'm a lefty, hubby is a righty. Oldest DS is a righty, middle DS is... well he wasn't born with most of his hands, so he uses both for everything. And my 21 month old little girl favors her left. We just noticed that the other night while eating dinner. She used her fork in her left hand the whole time. :)

I used to get in trouble in high scool because when I would do a report, my hand would get tired in the middle of it & I would switch hands, & my writing would be slanted in dif. directions, LOL! My english treacher hated it & would make me write my papers over. :(
Don't know why, but I can only use scissors with my left hand I can't use the ones made for rightys. And I play guitar (or TRY to) left handed. I used to drive my grandfather nuts, because I would turn the strings around on his guitar, play it awhile, then put them back the way they were. But I couldn't tune it then, so he had to tune his guitar all the time. ;)

I'm a righty and so are all the kids. My mom is a lefty and she can write as good and fast backwards as she can frontwards, it's quite a site. Kali my 3 year old does alot with both hands but holds pencil or crayon in right but sometimes she does it with left but it's pretty obvious that she'll be a righty.
When I was in 3rd grade I broke my right thumb and was in a cast for about 3 months (broke it 2x), I had to learn to write with my left hand and can do it quite well, I also still tend to hold a fork with the left one and eat.

DEH and I both write left handed, but the kids are right handed. I read somewhere that two leftys can't make a righty, uhoh!
Ambidextrous is someone that can use both hands equally well, I use mostly my left hand, but my right for some things, like scissors, I made up my own word for it, ambilateral.

I was just talking about this... in kindergarden(long time ago) my teacher thought i was mentaly challanged. I would write wit h my right hand, but it would be backwards. I would mirror write. She had a meeting w/ my parents when I wouldn't stop. She thought I was doing it to be funny.. At the meeting my mom told her why I did it and that I would not be held back. My mother also used some colorful words, im sure. She always did. But now, I cut w/ my right and do alot of other things right handed, but I write w/ my left...
LEFTY'S RULE!!
Capt, my left hand is smeared w/ purple ink....super sexy! It's always tuff to scrub it all off too... such a strange place .

My dh & I are both rightys, my dot is righty, but my son is lefty, but like lisarae's, he plays sports the other way. It was so funny when he played t-ball (we had bought a glove for a lefty) and he would take it off and throw with his right hand !!! The way we finally decided he was really a lefty, is we asked him which hand he used to wipe his butt!!!!!!!!! I know that is awful, but it is really true. LOL.......

My daughter will be 3 1/2 in April and I still can't tell for sure if she's a lefty or a righty. She switches back & forth all the time. She has a big insulated mug she drinks out of and you can put the lid on it so you can use either your right or left hand to hold it. When I put the lid on for her left hand she picks up the handle with the right. If I turn it around the other way for her right hand, she'll pick it up with the left.

my hubby and our three kids are right handed, my father was a lefty and my Mom is righthanded, I was originally a lefty for some reason my Mom (must have talked to maniac teacher you had ahippiehic) got it in her head that I had to be smacked everytime I used my left hand and so in her words broke me from using my left hand. Anyway it must have wore her out because my younger brother is a lefty, oh thats right he was the perfect child who could no wrong so I guess it became alright. No issues here! LOL
