Okay I had just opened the shop where I work at and had sat down at the table talking to a friend when an officer came in and ask if I was Crystal I said mmm yes (not knowing why he wanted me) he had some papers in his hands then he said well do you have a child named Bethany and I again not knowing why I said yes I do. Then with a big smile on his face he said well I have come to let you know that we do a program every year that is called shop with a cop and your children have been selected to go with us I was soooo shocked I have never had anything like this happen to me it was so nice of them. I guess my daughters teacher put us in for it. Now we have to meet him at the police station on the 14th to go shopping at wal mart for christmas presents. Has any one heard of this? I don't know how much they spend on the kids but he said that they get toys and clothes if they need them. Do they do this every where or select area's does anyone know about this program?

I have seen the commerical too. It is a great program. The officers love doing it and say that most of the times they have to insist the kids pick out something for themselves, because they always want to spend it on their siblings or other family members. I am so glad your children get to do this.

Shop With a Cop is a great program. It is done in many places. It show a child that police officers are not always the bad guy and the child gets to spend some time looking for his/her presents.

Like eeigh said, most of the kids are wanting to get things for siblings, parents, and friends and so the Cops usually end up taking a little money out of their own pockets to make it all possible.

It is great that Bethany is going to get this opportunity.

my son got selected for something similar by the school he attends. this was back in 1998 when i was seperated and on state assistance because i was seperated and preggers. ( long story ), anyways they got my son a new backpack, shoes, sox underwear, jeans, shirts etc. enough for one outfit a day for a week. 2 kids from the school got picked for it, I was so greatfull for it at the time as you can imagaine. Im glad your child got chosen, it does help out so much!

HHmmmmm, I've heard of this program also, but I think I would find out through the police dept. about who nominated my child and make sure this is all legit. I know it probably all is for real but gosh doesn't this sound like the perfect way to get a kid, just to be on the safe side call the police department and verify the date and time and the officers names assigned to your child, make sure you say her name and find out that she is on the list for sure, tell them you lost paperwork or forgot the time that way you know its for real. Sorry but I got a scenario of a guy renting cop uniform and meeting you on the steps outside like he is running late or something, I am so paranoid, and I don't mean to scare you but just double check to be safe, it can't hurt to check it out more. There are so many predators out there it scares me to death and posing as a police officer is how a lot of them gain access to their victims. Please call and verify it.

Am I the only one that recognizes that someone could take advantage of this program and pose as a cop. Am I that paranoid?

well, in this instance it seems on the up & up to me for 2 reasons:

1) he approached you first, not your daughter
2) he did not arrange to pick up the child off premises. it was arranged for you to meet him at the police station.

still, it is best to err on the side of caution. I'd get his name/badge # and go early (maybe a day or two early) to the PD and talk to the officers/sheriff/whatever thre andverify this guy is truly a policeman and this is ligitimate.

it's wonderful news! I'm so happy for you!

I think it's wonderful and it sounds legit to me. It's better to be safe than sorry though. The program is in my town also.

I know they do it here too, but they go to K-Mart, 'cause we don't have a WallyWorld in this town :(. I've seen the cops there with the kids and asked them about it. Don't know if my kiddiegardener will get chosen this year or not. Can always hope!

It is okay I know the officer myself and my husband know just about every cop there is here in town as he works at Circle K and they all go there every day so it is okay.

Great! but I am a natural born worrier and this sounded like some kind of ploy to use to get a child. In this day and age its so sad that we have to watch our kids so closely and not trust anyone.
