I have a cable modem and I have to rent it through the cable company. If I ever stop getting service from them the modem has to be returned.

It's your NIC card.
Are you on a dial up right now?
I bought my own modem so I wouldn't have to rent any more from the cable company. It has already paid for itself.

your ethernet connection is for cable and maybe dsl(?)
usually cable is hooked up through your usb but usb is not made for continous activity therfore u hook it up through ethernet. usb hookup tends to disconnect alot. if u r on cable, change it over to your ethernet if not already. any ? email me

Network Interface Card. So I take it you don't have anything plugged into that spot and you are "dialing up" to get to the internet? Using a phone line?

chort I have AT&T Broadband as my internet service provider would they let me buy my own modem? I have the modem that came installed in the computer but when I got service through the cable company I had to take that one out and they hooked up their own external modem. It's the type that sits on the floor.

Yep its a cable internet thingy ;)
If you have two computers, you can also hook then up with each other and share files (me and hubby do this)

You can do this with dial-up also, but be prepared for S L O W speeds.
We bought our cable modem at an electronics store for about half the price the cable company wanted for theres.

I returned the one I was renting ($5/month)and I bought one from Butt Buy(We have a love/hate relationship. I worked there for 5 years.) for about $60. (After $20 Mail in rebate)All I had to do was call them with my MAC address. (Media Access Control number specific to the 'type' of media. In this case it would be on the back or bottom of your modem.)
After they changed the MAC address in their system I was up and running again. Just give them a call! :)
