just guessing, but maybe..
turpentine or mineral spirits
I would try these as a last resort if it is a painted surface.

maybe fingernail polish remover.

You can buy cover up paint in the automotive section that is in like a finger nail polish bottle. You could try matching the color and just covering it up.

Fingernail Polish Remover will work but be careful with the enamel on the fridge itself. I would not saturate the cotton ball or whatever you are using to take it off. I use remover all the time to clean a dry erase board in myu office. Hope it works Peg.

Oh baby. No way. Here's what you need:
GOO GONE®
Get it at KMart, it is the most amazing stuff I have ever used. I go through bottles of it every year and use it for everything. It's taken the yellowing off of an old copier I have for chrissake.

Barring that, go online and hunt down my next favorite cleaner
ORANGE GLO®

This sh*t is U.N.B.E.L.I.E.V.A.B.L.E. it is so good. How good? I have electric kitchen appliances with 20 years of baked-on grease (practically shellac by now) and Orange Glo® dissolved it. I have never in my life seen anything like it. And I hate to clean. But I tell ya it is a thrill to see your old trusty chrome appliances revealed for the first time in 20 years. It even smells good. Unbelievable stuff. :p Have fun.

i use the orange cleaner that my husband uses when his hands are greasy from working on the car, or pine sol, depending on how long it has been there.

Where I used to work we used to use dry erase markers and a board. After a while the stuff wouldn't completely come off. So we ended up using alcohol on a cloth. It worked wonders. :)

also, dry erase makes a spray to clean it off, you might go to walmart and see if they have it
