Over the years, I've belonged to Doubleday and Literary Guild...more than once. Just like a music club, it's only advantageous if you take your 5 or 6 books, then buy the minimum requirement (usually 3 books in 2 years or whatever) and then CANCEL immediately. Their closeouts are reasonable, but their list prices of bestsellers, etc., are not. I've found I can get my books at Sam's, Costco and other B&M stores much cheaper. Even Borders has been cheaper at times than the book clubs.
Same with music clubs. 12 cds for $1 or whatever. Great. But you'll pay shipping on EACH cd. Fill your membership requirement and cancel.
And BE SURE TO MAIL BACK the card AS SOON as you get it, or you'll be receiving a book or 2 a month you have no desire to read. And you have to pay to send them back.

Im doing the mystery guild right now and love it. Jaybird is right about cancelling when you meet the required amount though. Also they have an option on the website where you can decline your monthly books instead of having to mail the card in.:)

Thanks! How long after you signed up did it take to get your first books?? and if i sign up for mystery guild (my preference of books LOL) where on the site is that option to turn the books down that would be sooooo much easier than the dang cards LOL!!
:) THank you so much for all your help!
I was thinking bout joining then canceling when my books are bought and then maybe signing up again later on :) is that wrong? oh well

When I signed up I went through mypoints I think. If you pick the credit card option you get your books in about a week. If you choose to get the invoice when you get your books its 3 weeks maybe. To decline your books online you sign in then go to main selections and it gives you a send/dont send option.

Belonged to Mystery Guild, Doubleday, Crossings and Literary Guild. Just make sure you decline what you don't want. I think I did the option to have them send emails or to check online when I signed up with them. I would just check it every other week just to make sure I wasn't sent anything. Yep, I did have to send a couple back cause I wasn't paying attention. Hey ever notice that it costs a heck of a lot less to send it back than they charge to send it to you. lol all that handling is expensive now. I think it took me 3 weeks to get the books when I had them just bill me. They will also have a number on the back of the slip they send you to decline or accept that you can call to say your decision if you ran out of mailing time. It was never a toll-free number though. I would buy the rest of your commitment as soon as you can though and get it over with. Some books will not count towards your commitment, so make sure it doesn't say that under the book that you order.
BMG wasn't soo bad lol. I ended up getting 12 cd's for the full price of one and about $3 shipping on each of the 12. So it was about 17 for the full price +3 s/h and then about $33 more for the rest of s/h. Totalled around $53 for all 12, so around $4.42 a cd if you average it out. Their choices are NOT very good though and the newest stuff isn't available. The reason they state is that if they wait longer to get them they can pass the savings to you, but really a crock as most of their full prices don't reflect much of a savings. You can accumulate pts and junk, but I won't do it again. lol

Thanks Kel for the info...and yes they sure do charge an arm and a leg for shipping...good thing is though...the CD clubs charge a ceratin price each looks like the books clubs are about $4.99 for the first book and $1.99 or so after that...alot better than the music ones!

I've been happy with all the book clubs I've been in except for Quality Paperback--long story. I always buy the minimum and then cancel because a lot of times you can rejoin later and get the cheap deal. Right now I'm in crafter's choice, but I just got done with Venus Book club (erotica) and they were one of the best. I can't remeber any others right off hand.

Really?? I've belonged to BMG for over 5 years. I've rarely bought a CD that didn't come from them. Between points and sales, I get CD's averaging about 3.50 or so. Very often, I just pay shipping (which is a little pricey $2.49 each CD) I never buy a "selection of the month", I just wait for them to email me about the sales (usually once a week or so) and I get CD's for up to 80% off. And they offer me such fab deals over the phone (this is an option that you can choose on the site) that I have 18 free CD's waiting for me to pick. (I'm saving for Xmas)
I do agree that the choices of "new" music can sometimes be limited. However, I patiently waited for the new No Doubt CD and it was available last month. To me, its like going to the movies or waiting to rent the DVD...I really have to want something pretty bad to shell out 15-16 bucks for a CD (or 9.50 to go to the movies) as opposed to 3-4 bucks through BMG (albeit at a later date) or 2 bucks to rent a movie (also at a later date)
Usually, my pocketbook wins over my impatience.
I started using BMG to replace my vinyl with CD's. I think I've done pretty good with them. My suggestion for BMG would be to wait for the sales and let them call you!!
