Need some info. Sarah's apartment has original hardwood floors, not laminate. HOW do we clean them, what do we use to protect them a little and what's the basic care for them?

I'm thinking really big throw rugs!!! ;)

I have all hardwood floors in my apartment, in the areas that are high traffic and the areas where I have heavy furniture, I use large throw rugs to protect the floors, also put floor protectors on the bottom of all furniture (you get them at Home Depot or Lowe's for real cheap), the exposed areas I clean with vinegar and water, a small amount of white vinegar mixed with about a gallon of water

Wow, that's it? That's easy enough. I already have a note to get the protectors. And they can pick out a big area rug for the living room. Since they don't have one scrap of furniture to put in the living room, it should be fairly easy, hey?

Just vinegar and water? Coolbeans! Thanks ernie!

sure no problem, when my parents were getting their hardwood floors refinished about 8 years ago, the guy that did them told us just plain vinegar and water is the best to clean with (and its also cheap-a plus for us starving students ;) )

Thanks much! The other mom & I hope to get it cleaned tonight and ready to start moving into maybe some things tomorrow night. Sarah and Shanna are BOTH fulltime, starving, broke as a joke college students - so after we get the floors cleaned good (I'm going to look for that Floor Science stuff) the vinegar is the way to go it seems!

vinegar for me also! I have hard woods, but haven't cleaned them up since I've moved in my house! They look pretty good though! JB, I was at weekends only sat. I didn't see any retroey furniture--couches that is. I did manage to buy myself a couch and a recliner though.. :)

Sarah & I went to Weekends Only Friday night and she did find a sofa & loveseat, they had it in a plum color (the fake suede looking stuff) and in a bright (not ROYAL) blue. $296 for the sofa, $256 for the loveseat. She found an awesome set of 3 tables, a coffee table & 2 lamp tables for $137 and 2 lamps for $20 each. I think we're making a trip with the truck to WO this weekend! Found her a microwave at Wal Mart for $35 too. She only needs one big enough to boil water and reheat leftovers. And they have so little counterspace, that should be perfect.

((I need to haul Raven up here to bargain shop for me!))

Clean it however you wish, and then use something called BRIWAX on it. It's a wax and a sealer that protects from scratches. You can get it at an antique store, or we also still have some from our shop that I'm looking to get rid of.

Murphey's oil soap. :D

OR (cheaper, maybe for a college student ;) )

add a lil lemon oil to mineral oil. OR use any oil to polish wood furniture: olive, corn, or any veggie oil or even mayo. :D

Another way: Mix 1 part vinnegar w/2 parts olive oil. (use white vinegar for light color & cider vinegar for dark wood)
