LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Veteran Hollywood comedian Jerry Lewis was taken ill on Sunday night just before going on stage at a London charity performance.
The audience was told that the 76-year-old Lewis, who has been suffering from pulmonary fibrosis in the lungs, would not be performing because he was unwell.
Lewis, who has been plagued by ill health for years, was due to appear at the London Palladium, the theatre where he first played alongside Dean Martin 50 years ago.
Back in the Eighties, he was declared clinically dead after suffering a heart attack. He later had prostate cancer, was diagnosed with diabetes and suffered from spiral meningitis.
His face has become bloated after he took steroid pills.
In an interview with the Daily Mirror that was published on Monday, Lewis was quoted as saying that the pain had been so agonising that he had contemplated suicide.
"In April it got so bad that it forced me to get a gun and seriously think about putting it in my mouth," he said.

Yes it is sad I love Jerry Lewis and can remember watching him all the time on Saturdays when I was a kid. All of the good ones are going:( :( :( :(

all those kids that look up to him for support and wisdom and help that love him so much dont hear about his thoughts of suicide. that would really hurt them even more to know that someone like him would try to give up so easily when he tells them to fight so hard for life.

My son, who is now 26 years old, has been on steroids since he was 3...they can wreak havoc on your mind, & body. You will say & do things that are not normally something you would say or do. We need to remember Jerry Lewis as a vibrant man who cares about kids, & realize that pain & medication can alter the way one thinks & feels. He would not want us remembering him the way he is now.

I read an article recently, can't remember where. But the pic didn't even look like him. Such a wonderful giving man, he still does his charity work and he is so sick. I wouldn't want to meet many stars but he is one that I would be honored to meet!

I was flipping through the channels last week and stopped at the telethon. I had to do a double take because I didn't realize that it was him. Steroids will do all sorts of horrors to your body. I was on them in the early 70's for almost three years. I don't ever want to do that again!
