I went every year for 8 years, but they laughed at the Mom-mobile, the last time I went so, I haven't been since 1996. I miss it. I have been to the River Run in Laughlin, Thank God I didn't go this year, there was a shoot-out in a Casino. Normally, even though they are wild, they are pretty safe. This year, not so much.

FYI - Sturgis is in South Dakota not North Dakota.
Widgetsx3 - It has gotten more kid friendly on the first weekend or the last weekend, but you never want to take your kids during the week.

Thanks lioncub for the corrections. I didn't even have the state right. LOL. We went to see Mount Rushmore and didn't know the Sturgis rally was the same week. The closer we got to Mount Rushmore the more bikers we started seeing. We thought what is going on? When we got to Sturgis I saw posters for a Neil Young concert so I thought they were all there to see him but Neil Young was there for the rally. I never heard of it. Bikers here, bikers there, bikers everywhere.
We stayed at the Custer State Park in a cabin so we were away from the town and the camp grounds where I hear wild things go on. I saw a program of it on the travel channel this year and they showed the wild things. Yipes. We were there in around '93.
It was neat though seeing bikers from all over the world at Mount Rushmore.

It is so cool up there, if you know what you're walking into. We took the oldest 2 boys one year and actually looked at all the license plates and found all 50 state, tons from Canada. Also a lot from over seas that people had flown in. We've never went to any of the concerts because there are just too many people and too much booze for me. You were lucky to get a place at Custer usually everyplace within a 200 mile radius is booked a yr in advance.

Gosh we were lucky. Just went without knowing squat. I thought about going the Neil's concert but had my SS with us and he was twelve so we decided against it. Now I'm glad we didn't go. We saw guys from France there. At least they were speaking French.
We went there after seeing my sister. She recommended going to Mount Rushmore because it was so nice and they stayed in the Park. After we left her house her daughter said oh no you shouldn't have told them that the Sturgis rally is this week. They're going to get into a mess, but it was ok.

Never been during the rally, but I've been out to Mt Rushmore several times. We get alot of Bikers pass through every year on their way up there. (We're in Nebraska) Quite a site this year, about 25 bikes all pulled into Arby's while we were eating dinner... For the most part they are all real nice people, but I guess there are some bad ones out there too.

I liked seeing the old mom and pop bikers. Boy do they have all the bells and whistles on their bikes. Every convenience and luxury you can imagine. Just a cruising along singing a song. LOL

For the most part most of the bikers are very nice. When I lived in Wyoming I did road construction, (flagger) one summer and when the rally came around there were a ton of bikers, and I can honestly say every single one of them were nice and even offered the flaggers along the way a soda. For of those who don't know, in Wyoming esp, you go miles and miles like at least 50 before you see or run into another person, and road construction will go about that far also. Its hot and dry- and for the most part these (bikers) were the only ones that would even offer and then go out of their way to go and get it. They're are some "loud" ones ,but not all of them are.

My 6 year old still has not forgiven us for not taking her to Sturgis a couple of years ago. We were driving through on our way to move to Washington. She is really into Harleys. My dad had her out on the bikes as soon as she could walk!

Yep, I know that feeling quite well! =) Ahh, I love driving 40 miles to the nearest walmart, and 100 if I want to go to the mall! :D  :D

Went through Wyoming on the way here. Yep it goes on forever. And the wind!! It was summer, I would hate to see how bad it would be in the winter!

jup677 - If you don't mind my asking, where did you live and when. We are in Newcastle, right by the SD border.
Nikkole - there are some people like that there, that's why I would never take me kids during the week, they seem to tone it down a little on the weekends knowing that more people bring their kids then.
Queensown - you have it better than me I have to go 80 for a walmart, all we have here is a crappy, overpriced Pamida, that ran out of school supplies 2 wks before school started and has yet to restock most of it.

Ugh, I hate Pamida! Our town won't let Walmart come in, cuz they are afraid of putting all the smaller businesses out of business, but everything here is SO overpriced (We have a pamida for general goods, and Safeway for grocerys which is AWFUL) But almost everyone here drives the 40 miles each way to Wal-mart once every couple of weeks because the prices are so much more reasonable.

They won't let wal-mart in here either. We have 2 grocery stores both locally owned but definately overpriced. We don't buy anything here unless it's absolutely neccessary like milk or in the winter if the weather is extremely bad. Even my kids (10, 7, 5, and 4) will tell you to "wait until you go to Wal-mart it's much cheaper)

My SIL won't shop Walmart because she says they drive the little mom and pop stores out but if the little mom and pop stores are gouging the people who can't get out to go 40 miles to Walmart then maybe they should be driven out.

I went to Sturgis once with my friend and her parents. I think I was 12. I was too young to appreciate it.

It's really a double edged sword... I feel terrible for the small business owners that are forced to shut down because wal-mart comes in. But as "the average american consumer" I buy at wal-mart because I really CAN get so much more for my money. One example here is last night we were having a cookout, and DH decided to buy some chips... He comes back from Safeway empty handed because chips (Lays, the flavored variety BBQ, Cheese, etc) were $3.99 a bag! We buy these at Walmart for $2.00 same size bag! I shop Safeway for sales, and Meat (They do their cutting and stuff onsite) and for produce I can't buy from the farmer's market only! I just wish we'd get ANY kind of supermarket here that would put Safeway out of business!
