Las Vegas Showcases Fiberglass Cows

(AP)-(LAS VEGAS)-It wouldn't be unusual to find hamburgers, steaks and all-beef hot dogs on a menu, but painted on a cow? That's where those and other items will be found during CowParade Las Vegas 2002.

Beginning in October, hundreds of colorfully painted fiberglass cows will graze in parks, medians, lobbies, the Strip and other places throughout the Las Vegas valley.

Some of the public art pieces will be decorated and designed by local artists, others by school children.

Businesses pay $7,500 to sponsor a cow and have it painted. The cows will be auctioned in February and proceeds will go to the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation and other local charities.

Similar exhibits have been in New York, Connecticut, Texas, New Jersey and Missouri, but the Las Vegas version will be unlike any other, said Jerry Elbaumm, president of Connecticut-based CowParade Holdings Inc., which is bringing the exhibit to Nevada.

"The Las Vegas exhibit is totally different from any we've done before," Elbaum said. "The art from each city has a different feel and culture and in Las Vegas you've got things that you would never find in other venues."

For example, one of the cows is doing a high-kick while sporting a pink and silver showgirl costume, complete with a pink boa headdress.

Another brilliantly painted cow comes with a built-in miniature "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada" sign. One side has collage of the Strip, the other side depicts scenery seen as one drives away from Las Vegas Boulevard.

John Main spent three weeks working on that cow along with artist Jim Severson.

"It's a lot of fun and then when you think of the children ... and how this is bringing art to the people, you see that it's just an excellent program," Main said.

Las Vegas magicians Siegfried & Roy thought so, too, and were the first to sponsor cows.

Their specially made bovines will be costumed like the magicians doing part of their show. The piece will be called "Moogicians of the Century."

Seattle had the pig parade last year. All the pigs were auctioned off for charity. Then in Puyallup, they had the cow parade and they were also auctioned off for charity.
They are neat to see if you get a chance to.
