A tractor-trailer carrying 19 tons of eggs was hit by a car on Interstate 75, causing the rig to flip over and spill its contents. One lane was closed for more than four hours, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
At about 4 p.m., a car driven by Virginia Escobar of Branford, 45, swerved to avoid another car. The FHP report said the tractor-trailer, driven by Wayne Carver of Georgia, 27, struck Escobar's car as she swerved into the truck's way, and then flipped over.
"Everybody had their seat belts on," Escobar said. "Thank God for that."
The lane closure caused some traffic to detour through Gainesville, which clogged 13th Street for a few hours with heavy truck traffic.
"(Deputies) had to close one lane of the interstate to clean up spilled fuel and the eggs," FHP spokesman Lt. Mike Burroughs said.
All lanes northbound on I-75 were opened by 9:30 p.m., Burroughs said.
Only minor injuries were reported, he said.
The report said Escobar likely would be charged with careless driving and Carver with driving with a suspended license.
