BRENTWOOD -- It's been a burning question on the public's mind: Where is that guy?
You know, the one who visits construction sites and asks for concrete or hot asphalt to be dumped right into his car. The one who actually had his request filled in Dublin, where workers poured concrete up to the steering wheel while he sat in the car.
Another visit
Well, he's been spotted again -- this time on Thursday in Brentwood, across the street from a site he had already visited in May. Moreover, the same company, Concord-based Independent Construction, was on the job.
Foreman Ruben Gaytan said Superintendent Bobby Garrigan spoke to the man, who asked for some asphalt. The man had previously been seen driving a maroon Volvo, but this time he was behind the wheel of an early'70s, white Oldsmobile station wagon, Gaytan said.
"They asked him if he was 'the concrete guy,'" Gaytan said. "He said, 'Yes.'"
Gaytan, who arrived just moments before the man drove away, recognized the man from his visit in May. At that time, he asked workers to shovel hot asphalt into his car, which already contained what Gaytan said was an 800- to 900-pound cement block. Back then, Gaytan denied the request for asphalt, saying he didn't want his company to be liable for injuries.
Police on lookout
Garrigan similarly denied the man's request Thursday. He did, however, warn the man that police were looking for him.
"I already talked to the cops," he reportedly said.
Ever since the Dublin incident, police had been hoping to question the man on his motives, maintaining that he had committed no crime. The man eventually paid visits to construction sites in Fremont, Hayward, Brentwood and Santa Clara County. His last known address traces back to a homeless shelter in Santa Cruz.
Garrigan told Gaytan the man was "filthy and had concrete smeared all over him."
When Garrigan asked the man what he was doing, the man reportedly said, "Well, I'm trying to get back at my ex-wife. She left me and took everything I have."
Mystery solved?
