I WAS JUST WONDERING IF ALOT OF YOU BUY THE EXPENSIVE STUFF, OR THE GOOD OLE CHEAPO BRANDS?
A WHILE AGO I HAD GOTTEN MY HAIR CUT AND TOLD THE GAL I WAS USING PANTENE..SHE FREAKED OUT!!! SHE TOLD ME NEVER EVER TO USE IT. AND SHE SCRAPED HER SICSSORS ACROSS SEVERAL STRANDS OF MY HAIR TO SHOW ME THIS GOOK THAT BUILT UP.... I ADMIT, THAT WAS ENUFF TO CHANGE MY MIND, BUT THE MORE EXPENSIVE BRANDS DIDNT SEEM TO DO ANY BETTER..ACTUALLY MADE MY HAIR FEEL WORSE(IMHO)....

ANY HAIR DRESSERS OUT THERE WHO CAN TELL US IF THE STORE BOUGHT STUFF IS WORSE OR NOT???

to avoid any build-up, you should roate shampoos and not use the same ones all the time.

I go between Clairol herbal essences (not too crazy about it, esp the conditioner, its hard to rinse clean)
clairol daily defense
jeri Rhedding anti frizz
Suave
St Ives
The Aussie Line
Neutrogena T/Gel

and once in a while I try other stuff

about once a month, to help remove any buildup, you should put in a handful of baking soda on your head while you are washing your hair and work it thru real good, and rinse, OR use beer vinegar to rinse (P.U.! it stinks, rinse GOOD afterwards) then rinse thoroughly with water

I have really baby fine hair and when I used pantene it weighed my hair down from a build up from the conditoner

now I use herbal essence natural volumizer and weightless conditoner and a leave in conditoner (cause I get really bad tangles)

the lady who cuts my hair also told me to always wash hair twice, once to lift the dirt and once to actually wash it out, before conditioning and most people use way too much conditoner, only need an amount about the size of a nickle

Bed Head, Got2b or Joico. I love Joico, but it gets really expensive.

I love Pantene--I guess that gook is the only thing that will let me comb through my hair!! lol seriously My hair is halfway down my back and a real problem to comb through without losing half of it to my brush or pick. I love frederick fekkai's glossing creme but can't afford it. Suave salon professionals isn't too bad if I can't get the other. I usually use an Aussie spray in conditioner before I comb out as well. Heck I have resorted to just laying a towel over my wet hair instead of flipping my head and twisting the towel to go on top.

methinks I should just get layers cut in.

anyone have any hints for super long hair---like to comb or pick it out when totally tangled???????? I can use almost a whole bottle of detangling spray in one time.

NO i will not cut it too much---I know i know deal with it then right??:D

My hairdresser did tell me to take a teeny amt of you conditioner after shower and kind of wipe down just the outside of your hair to help with tangles but can't bring myself to try it. lol even more gook!!!:D

I never pay out the wazoo for shampoo and conditioner.I use White Rain,Suave or VO5,depending on what's least expensive. And sometimes I have a coupon and I end up paying maybe .50 a bottle. All 3 brands work great for me and I have lots of long, thick, wavy hair.I would probably go bankrupt if I bought the expensive stuff.:) :p

Janelle I've tried tresemme. It doesn't work that great for me. It is great to use every once in a while to get all the buildup out though. I also like to use it to shave my legs. lol seriously:D

It probably depends on if you have dry or oily hair what brand works best for you. My hair gets oily after about three days.

My stylist always insists on the salon products but I don't know if they are all that much better. Years ago my stylist found out that I was using Pantene Pro V (shampoo & conditioner in one) and she freaked out. She said that stuff is bad for your hair --you should never use a 2-in-1 product. My SIL is a licensed cosmetologist and I love to check out her products to see what she is using. She likes Joico and Redken products but she's always switching between brands. Also, I remember her telling me once that when she was in school, they used Head & Shoulders (or something like that) to strip out old perms and color!!

I usually switch between the good stuff and the average stuff. I love the Aussie line too -especially the one that is a No Buildup formula. It works well for my hair. Now that I started coloring my hair, my stylist wants me to use the good stuff (more moisturizing & to maintain the color longer) and she likes Sorbie. It seems to work well too, but costs too much.

i saw on 20/20, i thinkn it was, about a year ago, a consume rinvestigation about shampoo.

They said 2 things that stuck with me:

you don't have to lather, rinse & repeat. that is on their to get you to use (hence, buy) more product.

the salon shampoos are actually more watered down than the ones you buy in the stores, and are more expensive, therefore, one of the worst values for your money.

I have heard lots of hair dressers say that Pantene is very bad for your hair. Also Suave as it has so much alcohol it really dries out your hair. My mothers hair dresser told her that if she was going to use shampoo that you can get at the store to use Jhirmack or VO5. I like Pure Hair by Artex. I use the one with patchoulli in it. Nexxus has some good ones too. I never use the same shampoo for more than three days in a row.

if i only used an amount the size of a nickel i might as well not use any!!! My hair is long and SUPER THICK like freakishly so and i have to use like a handful to be able to brush it afterword. I like Aussie, thermasilk, pantene citreshine, I buy whats on sale, but not the really cheap stuff because i have sesitive skin and it will hurt my scalp.

I use whatever smells the best. I like trying all the new scents the companies come out with. Right now I have VO5 Kiwi & Lime Squeeze. It smells yummy!

They are all the same to me. I cant tell a difference between "Suave and the expensive brands". lol

I change from time to time...I go from Bath and Body Works to Biolage to Tresseme....Just whatever is at the particular place am I shopping when out of shampoo and conditioner. I cannot use super cheap stuff like Suave or White Rain...I cannot use herbal Essences either....Freaks my scalp out, I think they have too much detergent or something...

Ugh, me either... I had a shampoo, conditioner body wash and lotion that I bought in that brand just for some cheap stuff to have while traveling that I wouldn't mind if I left in a room or something, but I completely broke out... Yuck! And it actually smelled pretty good too, so it was a bummer.

I switch off alot. I guess the ones I use most often are herbal essences. Right now I'm using Philosophy amazing grace conditioner and I love it. It's so expensive though that I'll never be able to buy it. I wish I could use the cheap stuff, but it kills my hair.

my first time in here and I like this thread, so I have to respond to it.

First of all different shampoos and conditioners are going to work differently in different areas of the world. Heck sometimes it can be different from one end of the city to the next. Some have hard water and some have soft water.

Soft water is water that contains anywhere from 0 - 55 mg/litre of calcium carbonate.

Hard water is water that contains calcium carbonate ranging from 120 - 250 mg/litre.

The effects of hard water are mainly aesthetic. Scale deposits can form on appliances and more soap is needed when bathing, washing clothes or cleaning household items.

I know that here I can use St. Ives, or Loreal, or Fineese, Or Salon Selectives and have no problems, but when I travel to my friends house in another province, I can't. I end up with fly away hair!

kelbend - try coming your hair under the running water while you have the conditioner in it. It will get rid of a lot knots much easier and it gets the rinse through all the ends. Then rinse and rub the towel over you hair from root to tip in a clasped hand. Don't rub it that is one sure way to get split ends and knots. Just gently wedge it between the towel and pull down to dry it.

That should help you out.

I hope to see more on this interesting thread!

Well, I never listen to what they say - I try them out. After years and years of "trying out" I use Pantene Smooth & Sleek. It's the absolute BEST thing for MY hair! I use Pantene Clarifying Shampoo to get rid of the gook, b/c I leave it in my hair. Yep, I do. It doesn't look oily (and I don't have dry hair) and it makes it stay in place so I don't have to put anything else in it, AND, it holds down baby hairs that aren't long enough to stay down. (Fly-aways)

Right now I am using Nizoral- it's a prescription shampoo, my scalp is SO dry due to the hypothyroidism, and the conditioner I use is The Conditioner by Paul Mitchell (leave in)
In the bathroom, we do have Herbal Essence, Finesse (b/f's), Aussie, Biolage (dot's), and of course we have the old standy- Suave just in case lol

Froggy- tell me more about the Pro-Vitamins, that might help my scalp.
