She doesn't sound very caring but it only stands to reason that she wouldn't order a bunch of expensive tests that you don't have coverage for when the first (and cheapest) step is to quit smoking.

I have awesome insurance that pays everything. I was in the same position as you and had a bunch of tests done and was actually in the process of having sinus surgery. In between times I quit smoking and all of my problems went away. None of the tests, drugs, inhalers or anything else helped until I quit smoking.

You are definitely not too young. My son is 10 and has been on a CPAP machine for 2 years because he has sleep apnea. At first they thought it was narcolepsy but they tested him for that and it wasn't that, then they did the sleep apnea test and found out it was that.

My MIL has sleep apnea, as stated above... she does NOT smoke.

I'm not saying that what ever probs. OP has is not related to smoking because she has had no tests done.... but it does not have to relate to her smoking, we just all assume and jump to that conclusion when one smokes.

I know you are young but I don't know anything else about your overall health. If you are overweight or at all at risk of heart problems please get a stress test.

A few weeks ago my dad went to the doctor because he'd had a hard time catching his breath lately. Because he is older they gave him a stress test. It showed he had a heart attack at some point in the previous 6 weeks. He didn't even know it. He was scheduled for an angioplasty and they discovered a 95% blockage. He had a stent put in and went in yesterday for another. If it wasn't for he stress test he would never have known about his heart problem and probably wouldn't have survived another year.

I am so sorry this happened to your dad. I am glad they caught the problem in time and they fixed it.
As for me I am not over weight at all if anything I am underweight. I would love to gain about 15 to 20 pounds I just can't seem to keep any weight on.

Good luck with your second opinion.

My niece who lived with her grandmother had serious fatigue problems along with difficulty breathing. You could just tell by looking at her that she was not herself. Her pediatrician told her grandmother three times on three separate visits that all the problem was is that she lived in a home with two smoking adults.

Unfortunately, it was not until she could not get out of bed that a chest x-ray was done, which determined she had something really wrong with her. I don't think it is fair that smoking is quick to blame first and only. Sure it is probably a factor in most cases, but not always.

You say you are down to 7 cigs a day. Congratulations to you on cutting back so much! Now it will be a lot easier for you when you decide you dont need those 7 a day

Some drs only care about what kind of payment they can get out of someone. they dont give a chit about bedside manner anymore.

I sincerely hope that the doc you see tomorrow has been around long enough to know that making a diagnosis isnt all there is....hopefully the new doc has a better bedside manner...

I am so thankful for the docs I have had especially when I was going thru my scare with uteran cancer... my ob/gyn had a WONDERFUL bedside manner and helped me get past my fears.

Getting a bad case of asthmatic bronchitis in 1999 was the best thing that ever happened to me. That scary "I can't breathe" feeling was enough to scare me out of a 2 pack a day habit. My doctor just told me to keep remembering how that felt and it got me through the worst of the withdrawals. Just saying....
