UGH...my DS and brand names
Up until now, my DS was happy with Walmart, Target or even hand me downs for clothes and shoes etc. But since the start of the school (6th grade), he has asked for brand names. I have bought him some things and allowed him to buy things with his own money. But he refuses to wear anything that is not name brand right now. I know its hard being a pre teen/teenager, wanting to fit in, etc but I cant afford these things. On Friday, he came home saying that he needed new shoes. I JUST bought him new shoes at the start of school. But apparently, the kids say that this brand of shoe was OUT. So he needed new ones of a different brand. I told him NO WAY. So he sulked all weekend long, refusing to go out to play with friends and just sitting in his room. This am, Joe came over and was going to the store to pick up something so he asked my DS if he wanted to go. Well apparently the store Joe went to was right next to the shoe store. My DS mentioned the shoes he wanted and, you guessed it, Joe, without even calling and asking me, bought him TWO pairs of these shoes!!!!!! Needless to say, the shoes went back and now both my DS and Joe are mad at me.
UGH. Does anyone else have kid that demand brand names and what do you do??????

Go to thrift stores and goodwill. You can find like new, brand name items for a very small price! My kids dress in the most popular name brand clothing, and I have less than $100 in their entire wardrobes- and can afford to add "new" to them items all the time.

For example, I went to goodwill Thursday. I found 7 Aeropostale shirts in my son's size on the half price rack. Like new condition, cost me under $2 each. I put two of them in his closet. The others will be Christmas presents.

My DD is 8 and doesn't think she HAS to have name brands but does ask for them sometimes. I go to discount places like DD's and you can get new brand name clothes and acc's pretty cheap. Not knock off's either. I shop there for my clothes too and they're almost all name brand. And like Dr Grin said, thrift stores are good places also.
When I was a teen & asked for them I got just got told NO. I was pissy for while over it but my life didn't crumble nor did I become an outcast, lol! He'll get over it of he doesn't get them.

I'm lucky my boys will wear whatever I buy them and they are 16 and 10. I do buy things at the Thrift Store and find some really nice things. That is my favorite place to shop for clothes because you can get a whole brown paper grocery bag for $8. I don't go to Goodwill as often because their prices are higher, but still not bad.

We live in an age where children think everything should be handed to them. What a child requires is food, water, clothing and shelter. Not Nike and $400 jeans. When I was a child, my mom provided me with the basics, I did wear some name brand but they were all thrift store finds. If he thinks he is too good for thrift store name brands, then help him find work he can do, like raking leaves or mowing lawns or whatever is appropriate for his age.

My oldest is in 6th grade. He has not asked for name brands, he really is not into that. He only wears jeans and t-shirts. He has a big zip up sweat shirt he wears all the time now that it is cooler out. He is allowed to pick out his shoes as long as they are under a certain amount, for us it is about $20. cause we usually end up buying for all 3 of the kids at once. He will sometimes get upset cause he can't find something he likes for that price but oh well, that is the rule.

I was different with my sons-my oldest would wear anything,my youngest was a preppy?sp---anyways i got my son what he wanted, yes i did the 200 dollar shoes and the 75 boss jeans,i wanted my child to fit in with the group,he did basketball from 4th grade to the 12th-now the boys dad wouldnt buy them the things they wanted,so i worked extra hours and longer hours,so i could get my son what he wanted-he is 28 now and still a trend setter, but he buys his own-he is a boilermaker and makes big bucks, but he still shops at our local goodwill,he loves the bargians he gets there and its name brand.

Yup I have to agree thrift stores are the way to go! If hes not with you he would NEVER know the difference. I bought an Aeropostale skirt for $6 then went to Walmart and bought a shirt on clearance for $3 so had a whole outfit for less then $10(plus tax).
You can go to places like Platos Closet they look nothing like what you would think a thrift store would look like it has the atmosphere of a mall store and I would bet anything his friends get some if not all their clothes at places like that. If you could atleast get him to agree to go in and look I bet hed find something he liked
