Thumbs down never seems to end!

k I need to talk with someone or get advice from someone that has had the same problem if possible.

I helped a friend over a year ago by adding her to my verizon...things went well so I added her daughter too.

Now, she and her husband have both lost their jobs, she is loosing her house and she is not wanting to pay the bill (which I can understand her situation) but she is telling me that I went over my minutes. I was paying 70 for 450 minutes before adding her on, then I bumped it to 700 thinking it would be enough, now she is saying she is not responsible for any of the overage. I went over my minutes (which to me if im still paying the 70 all these months I should still be able to use 450 minutes as i always have) I did go over by 17 minutes, which is like $5 extra ill have to pay, but now my bill is $243! $61 of that is overdue by her from last month. Now my phone may be shut off because I tried to help someone else and was nice.

My question is does anyone know if I am able to take them off and have the remaining portion of the bill be sent to her house (remember she looses it next month) or am I going to have to pay this no matter what? if that is the case I wont be able to pay my portion of it next month which a month before my contract runs out so in turn ill have to pay for the cancelation fee for all of us?

The contract is in your name which you are responsible for, they will not send her anything or really even care. Sorry. Only thing would be to take those two off your plan, call them up and ask if you can cancel those two phones and ask about setting up a payment arrangement for what you owe so you may be able to keep your phone on. You will have to pay the early termination fee for the two phones but in the long run it will be worth it.

Dh's parents went through this with dh's older sister and her husband, they ended up paying a ton of money for what they ran up on the phones and shutting off the two phones.

Good Luck.

sounds like you need to call Verizon and talk to them. This type of thing is on Judge Judy every day.

you can also supsend the phones and only pay the $10 a month for each line, just say they're lost so you don't have to pay the term fee.

yep, I would call Verizon and tell them you want those 2 lines suspended and then just pay the monthly bill. Maybe you can explain it to them and they'll be able to help you out with a payment plan? Especially since you're an established customer?

You are not alone, I know many people that have gotten burned from helping others when it comes to cell phones, as mentioned before call Verizon, cancell those other phones and try and work out a payment plan, because you are respnsible for the bill since it's in your name.

Good Luck!

Yep.. same as what the others posted. Tell your friend that although you understand the position she is in with the losing of the jobs, etc, that she needs to help pay as much as she can, even if its $50 for right now. Yes you may have gone over your minutes, but she still owes for her and her daughter.

If she doesn't want to pay you there is really nothing you can do. Like my daddy always used to say, "don't give it away if can't afford to lose it".

You have to get them off your plan. Just call your carrier and find out when you can cancel those phones without paying a penalty. Most have a 1 or 2 yr contract.

I have the same problem with my ex BIL! In fact, he just called me on Friday because he got a call saying that I hadnt paid the monthly bill and it was late. I just forgot. He totally chewed me out for not paying on time.....yet HE hasnt paid me in YRS. I put him on our family plan because, after he bought the phone, it was only going to be 4.99 a month-he hated cell phones and said he was never going to use it. We wanted him to have one just in case. Well now he is ADDICTED to his cell. He racks up a ton of minutes, mostly for work. HE gets reimbursed for the work calls but doesnt actually give the money to ME. He keeps it!!!! I want to get him off the plan but I have to wait until next Feb because he bought a new phone earlier this yr (without my knowledge)....and it had a 1 yr contract!

The kicker....he has a really good paying and stable job, has for yrs. I am currently not working. Yet he has the NERVE to chew me out for not paying MY bill on time. I told him in Feb, he is on his own-a LONG time coming.

Lesson learned!

Good luck with you situation.

Yep. I don't care if its family or a friend NO money or putting them on a bill etc. is going to happen with me. Unless I don't expect payment in return. I have been burned ONE time from my brother for a VERY small amount. Plus I have watched family do it to other family etc. They figure if your not a bank they don't "have to pay it back.
I would call verizon and work out payments and suspend the phones till the end of the contract for those two phones. And then I would ask your friend to make payments for HER portion.

Suspending the phones does not do what you think it does. The contract will be extended for however long you have the phones suspended. Usually they will only do 3 months sometimes up to six months. I would have them shut off the phones and pay the monthly amount until the contract is complete. I have gone through this with phones at work. Not really sure they will work with you on a payment plan. The best thing to do is call them NOW and have those phones shut off immediately.
