Have the healthcare changes started
I wonder because my mother, who is 81 years old was told after 2 1/2 years of her current health plan, that she is too old for thyroid meds and chantix to stop smoking. They said that older than 65 is the cutoff. Excuse me, but she has been over 65 for 16 years. The state paid unril 2 1/2 years ago when she opted in to Humana Gold and they have been providing it. Now suddenly, she is too old for hormones for her hypothyroidism or to quit smoking with meds.

That just means that medicare has decided to stop covering that particular med. She can ask her PCP if he has any samples to give her.
No changes have been made to the healthcare services yet.

Yes. They stopped using Armour. I asked what drug they covered. Had the doctor order it and was again told not if you are over 65.

She can also get a generic medication for her Hypothyroidism and it is not very expensive - probably less than $ 20.00 per month. The Chantix was probably never covered under Medicare.

You can get one of the thyroid meds at WalMart for $4 per month.

Again they will no longer cover thyroid. She could pay out of pocket $11. But she will not. Chantix was covered but they no longer cover it if you are over 65 years old.
I wonder if they changed in anticipation of the healthcare changes. Like the financial industry is doing making rates variable and charging for credit cards that used to be free in lieu of the new rules to take affect next year.

I bet the changes went into effect on October 1 - when the new Federal year begins. These changes had nothing to do with the plans Congress & the President are trying to sort through since those are not suppose to effect Medicare. I would bet they were already in the works as ways to save money - they do make changes to what is covered and what reimbursements are made through Medicare each year.

I can understand them saying a particular medicine for her thyroid problem isn't covered anymore. But to tell her she's too old for thyroid medicine is another thing all together. Desn't that mean the doctor can no longer prescribe thyroid medicine to her so she can't get a prescription for a generic or any other kind? What does she do now about her thyroid problem?

My Mom is 85 & takes Synthroid & I can get a 'script filled for each month w/o any problems. Does your Mom have a separate drug plan?
Now I did get a notice from Blue Cross that I need to try Ambien CR before I can get a refill for Lunesta.

My Mom is over 65 and her thyroid meds are still covered. She just has a Rx renewal on Friday. She gets a generic and pays $4.00 at Walmart. Maybe your Mom needs to change supplemental plans???
