you know, I wish I could say I 'feel ya' but I don't have insomnia. I did once when my husband was out of the country for 6 weeks. Like you say, it was not getting to sleep that was the problem, it was staying asleep and when I would wake up, I mean I was wiiiiddddeee awake! I tossed, turned, and it almost is an irritable type feeling I got lying there in bed @2am,3am,4am,etc.
I know I have read tips on insomnia. Obviously no caffeine after 4pm,try to exercise before bedtime, no tv, laptop,or any other activities when you get to bed, etc.
I'm sure there are others on here that can give you some advice, as it is something that affects millions.
Not sure of your age, but it is also something that can affect women that are pre-menopausal or are in menopause.
How do you feel about maybe trying a tylenol pm or a benadryl at bedtime?
I can see too how the cycle of insomnia could continue. for that short period of time that I had it, I became so pre-occupied when I would go to bed wondering if I was going to have another restless night; the stress of anticipating it could probably be something that exacerbates it, I'm sure.

I always fall asleep easily because I'm always exhausted. I wake up after about four hours and then can't go back to sleep. I can't remember the last time the alarm actually woke me up. It definitely sucks.

I haven't slept straight through the night in over 3 yrs. Seriously.
I'm surprised I haven't keeled over. I"m always tired.
None of the things listed above that people say you should do before bed (and not do) work for me.

I've heard melatonin (spelling is off) is supposed to help, and it's natural

I almost never get more than 6 hours and I usually wake up at least twice during the night. It is sooo frustrating, esp. when the alarm is due to go off at say 6:15 and I wake up at 5:30. Ugh! Good luck in finding a solution.

I also have trouble falling & staying asleep. I take Lunesta but only on the weekend.
Xanax does help but not always.

DH has had troubles with sleeping since he returned from Iraq.
VA doctor put him ambien, but I said no way!
He takes 2 Benadryl before he goes to sleep (only when he is on night shift, though) and it helps tremendously

I had a hysterectomy almost 2 years ago, so menopause is not a problem (was able to keep both ovaries thank God!)
I know what you mean about the stress of wondering if I am gonna be able to stay asleep, sometimes I wonder if that makes me wake up early...LOL

msginna ~ be careful with seraquel... my mom took it for awhile and it gave her a permanant 'tic' in her left arm... her arm 'strikes out' like a muscle spasm, but it never stops...
my insomnia is sporadic thank God, but it is REALLY annoying when it happens.
