You def need to call animal control on them. I can't believe he said he cant pay the vet bills because he does not have the money. I would have told him too friggin bad your dog did it. We have a Rottweiler and we NEVER let him roam or get out of the house without being on a leash. My dog would not hurt a fly but I would be freaked out if I seen him coming at me and I did not know him lol. Stand your ground they are in the wrong. I hope you get it resolved soon!

I am so sorry that you live next to such ignorance. They have an aggressive dog who is not kept within his boundaries. (not dissing the breed, just this particular dog) That is not cool.

I know it is hard...I am the type of letting others walk all over me. But this dog is a proven danger, so I hope that this is resolved soon for you.

So sorry that your dog was injured. Your neighbor needs to reimburse you for the vet bills and he needs to keep his dog from getting out. Just because you live in a rural area you shouldn't have to put up with a negligent pet owner.

I get upset because of some dogs that always seem to get loose while I'm walking my dog. I've had to start carrying pepper spray. I like to walk or run in the morning with my older dog and shouldn't have to change our exercise routine because of negligent pet owners.

This rott attacked your dog (your kids were too close) and it cost you $3K and the dog is still running around. You need to have that shotgun nearby, with a lock and when the dog comes on your property, shoot it. Maybe they will understand that you cannot afford to pay their $3K vet bill as you just had to pay for their dog attack and then they will get that fence fixed.

file charges against that dog and owner now

i;ve raised and bred rottys. and most of them are gentle giants , but there are those that are bred aggressive , and trained aggressive , this one is and aggressive and probley trained to be aggressive , this dog attacked yours while your kids were walking yours, well his instincts will associate their pressence to your dog , and if he smells your dog on your kids he can and will attack them , any dog that is in aggressive mode will do this, you must protect your family and pets , that dog is a danger to all , you can press charges up to six months affer an attack , tell the police when you file these charges and bring vet bills with you ,
please watch them closely that dog can be fast and very dangerous.

I would check into his homeowners insurance. Dog bites just may be covered under their policy.

IMHO if they can't afford to take care of your vet bills then they can't afford to keep that dog.

Go to the district magistrate & file a small claims case against them.

that was my thought as well!! You come into my yard and attack my kids or my dogs you ask for it. Esp. if your dog was leashed!!!!!!!!
We have had problems with a neighbors dogs in the past (supposedly harmless) and he has been told they will be shot next time. Also told the sheriff this. Keep them off my yard! I have a big yard and my dogs don't go into your yard so I don't expect yours to come into mine!
I would NOT care what his reason were for not wanting to pay. They have judments for that. Just because he says he can't afford it doesn't mean he can't. Plus if you take him to court he can either make arrangements to pay the "payments" with your vet or lump sum. Or if not next time he trys to buy or sell something UM NO LUCK. Because he has to take care of the judgement FIRST!!

Thanks for all the helpfull words, and encouragment. This whole thing just makes me sick, and I always try to be the person who understands that accidents happen, and sometimes things are out of our control. But it just feels like I am the one that is being inconvenienced here, and it was thier dog that did this. I know he has tried to keep the dog in, but she still finds ways out. They did pay for the initial consultation at the vet in town, but when we told them how much the surgery was going to cost said they couldn't afford that. This is all just such a headache i do not need right now.

Everyone has great advice - I have had huge problems with my neighbor regarding our dog and one other neighbor dog (he said he had anxiety and the dogs barked) while his rott ran around the neighborhood (my neighbor actually got video of his dog peeing on her dogs kennel with her dog in it!) - Yes, you need to make sure that he pays for the vet bills, it is part of being a responsible pet owner, if he can't be responsible, he doesn't deserve to have his dog and I cannot stess enough - KEEP EVERYTHING DOCUMENTED - dates, times, exactly where and when - take pictures. You prove the dog runs free and you probably win any lawsuit that comes of it. Good luck
