We had a garage sale this weekend, too. What is it with us crazy women and hottest weekend of the year garage sales? lol

We had a few hagglers. I held firm on quite a few things. Like the solid oak furniture, and the formal wear. But I priced everything so low, it was insulting to try to get it down to get this, a dollar for a $200 dress, and $40 for a $400 oak cabinet. I didn't think $5 and $60 were out of line.

We did have an older gent come by a few times. He was a hoot. Come to find out, he's a retired doctor, and his wife seems to be sick of him. He was pretty funny, and I can chat up an old coot for a few minutes to make him happy. Karma, and whatnot.

Others will bring their own bags and pile everything in those bags and when confronted they have been know to say "but I am doing you a favor. I am taking things that you would have to throw away". When told they have to put the items back or pay for them, they huff and puff and stick their noses up in the air! One person who no longer will show her face, turned out to try and get things free stating that she really needed the items and then would turn around and sell the items at her own garage sale. This church always has their doors open and want to help people who need it without any questions asked. Of course some people have been known to drive to the food pantry in their brand new BMWs, Audis and Jags and walk out with plenty of food. There are all types of people in this world.

I was chewed out on this board for saying it's rude to go get free food when you don't need it. I would never take it from those who need it. Those people are just wrong but I guess it takes all kinds.

I think it's easier to donate things to a church or to another good cause.
I've never had any luck having yard sales and the few times I tried I think I would almost give things away instead of having to pack them up and load them to take somewhere.

Sis and I are going to have a garage sale the end of July. We both hate to give them but need to downsize. Whatever is not gone on Sat. we will giveaway to whoever comes. The rest will be picked up by another couple for their sale. I am going to have a large box of free stuff.

My sister and I do 2-3 yard sales a year, and I've learned a couple of things. Always have lots of people on hand to help you watch your stuff. I learned this when I had a somewhat expensive camera stolen from me. Left me with a pit in my stomache. I learned really quickly that it is usually the van load of people who show up that steal. They have 1-2 people distract you by buying 25 cent items while the others go around stealing what they think will make some money.

And the hagglers...I figured out a way of dealing with them. If I have an item, especially and item that I know will sell for what I tagged it, and it's early in the day, I will simply tell the person, "I tell you what, if you really want it for that price, come back later today, and if it's still here, then I might go lower. But I'm confident that I will get my asking price for it this morning." Or a short and sweet, "It's way to early in the day for me to drop my prices." That usually shuts them up and sometimes, if they really want it, they'll buy it then.

I am always amazed how shows like Clean House can make so much at yard sales. I'm lucky to make anywhere from $50 - $100. People around here want stuff for practically free, too. But I figure, I'm hanging out with family and friends, having a few laughs, making memories and a few bucks. It's worth it to me.

I went to a couple last weekend and bought a nice set of sheets and a phone. I asked each seller, "Will you take such and such for it?" They did but had they not I would have paid full price. And neither time was I unreasonable. Both were priced pretty low, but if I can get it for less, I will.

I don't haggle, period. If it's not worth what the people want for it, I just pass over it.

I have gotten some very good deals at yard sales when the seller says if you buy that, I will give you this.

Wow, it is insightful reading this post.

I don't haggle. I don't give yard sales either. I haven't been to one in awhile either, but occasionally go. Some of the ones I have passed by real quick somewhat recently didn't have anything of interest. Mostly I freecycle. I have gotten many needful and wonderful things that way and have given away some good stuff to others that way as well. I am amazed to hear that people actually steal from yard sales. That is sad.
