Petco

Had a coupon for a free 8 pound Eukenuba puppy food bag and Petco still required me to pay the sales tax!

I couldn't believe this predicament... If the bag is free there isn't to be any sales tax because of Michigan's only requirement of tax on total purchase. So with no money exchanged, there is to me no sales tax.

Oh well at least I saved $15.49 and only had to pay 93 cents for 8 pounds of dog food.

I have never used a free coupon and not had to pay tax.

You would think you would have just posted in the neener forum that you got $16 worth of dog food for 98 cents... but thats just me.

They did a piece on the local news about this a year or so ago. They said here in PA they aren't allowed to charge you the tax.

Strange! I live in Michigan and have never paid sales tax on a free item. I just redeemed coupons for free cat treats and cat food in recent weeks.

I've always had to pay the tax as well , even if you get say, $5 off I've had to pay the tax on the original price, at least at Target.

I believe it even says on the coupons that the customer is to pay the sales tax. Like Teri said I would be happy to get the bag of food for basically nothing so I wouldn't be complaining either. lol

It has been this way for years in Michigan. The portion of the bill paid by a coupon, also reverts tax on that item since the coupon company pays in the end. I have never had to pay the tax on a coupon item. Until yesterday.

we have always paid tax for free item coupons -- if the items are taxable.

Same with Coke -- the free 12 packs of Coke, albeit are not taxed in Michigan, but you STILL must pay for the deposit.
