Property Taxes
Today our property taxes were due. You would think with it being the due date, the office would stay open past noon. We got them paid, but not without alot of hassle.
First of all you would think you could use your debit card to pay them. You can pay any other bill or tax with one. Everyone knows if there is no money on the card it will not work. Well they don't and DH and I had to find a bank to get the money out.
Then they have the oldest people working there. This lady couldn't count worth a %^*&!!! She finally got it right, after telling her there is no way that the bank, DH and myself counted wrong.
How many years will it take for these people to get there job right? This is not the first year that they are collecting property taxes.
Ok here is my thought for next year. I looked very carefully all over the office there, while waiting for the woman to count yet again. I did not see any sign that says they don't accept credit or debit cards. And I didn't see a sign that says they don't accept change. So I am going to save all my change for next year. Hopefully it will be mostly pennies lol. I will roll all the change so they can't complain about that!
What is everyone's opinion on this? They really have $&%%& me off this time. Last year was bad enough, we got the bill the day it was due. And then the office was closed, had to pay 10% penalty for that one.
This is only the second time for us paying property taxes. The man who we bought the house off, paid the first years for us. Not looking forward to dealing with them again.
Learned my lesson and won't forget what day they are due again. Expecially next year because I am looking forward to paying in change!

I'd put the date on your calendar. Usually your taxes are due on the same day (on or around) each year. Our taxes are escrowed and paid twice a year by our mortgage company. When a place/business/town office accepts debit/credit cards, they get charged a fee for each transaction. They're probably trying to keep costs down (thus saving the taxpayers some money) by not accepting the cards. Our town offices don't accept them, either. It IS a pain when you're used to using your debit for EVERYTHING (we are--we never carry cash), but I just remember that when it's time to reregister my car or pay my excise taxes on it, that I have to bring my checkbook.
Sorry your day was so frustrating.

My property taxes went up $400 this year and not a single thing was done on the outside of the house that would indicate that the city could raise the taxes but for the mil increases they ask for what seems like every other day.
At least I have 2 more months to pay mine... but then again I have my taxes included with my mortgage payment and the bank pays the taxes, providing they stay afloat.

Good grief, if you try paying that crew with change you'll probably still be standing there when the next year's taxes are due.

That's a big jump. Did you ask why it went up?

We had a battle with the city over our property taxes.. We own 2 lots and the taxes are included in with the mortgage.. Well they sold our mortgage to Chase and they weren't paying the taxes on the second lot..So dh calls and tells them they need to pay it.. Chase said no. So we had to hurry up and get to city hall to pay them because they were due THAT day.. Monday Chase ends up paying it.. Then the city said they sent the payment back to Chase and Chase said they never recieved it
It took us 3 months and dozens of calls and threats by our lawyer before we got that 3 grand back

They went up $300 a year for our schools...
Most every school in the city is being rebuilt from gound up...except for one high school, middle school and an old elementary school of which they will be remodeled over the next 3-5 years
The other $100 likely inflation...or GAS. Who knows.?

For us up in northern Michigan they said they're going to combine the taxes to once a year but in our district its not starting until next year.
Call and find out, this is your hard earned money, you deserve to know (and make sure) that everything is ok and right.

I would be careful about trying to pay with change. There have been several stories about people who have tried to that and ended up in jail. Not worth it.
